Not for nothing (though I usually hate that phrase) how many people on this thread are actually reading the responses before replying? I think just about every question has been answered so far

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
When Bloomberg says everyone stay off the streets he means non-city workers. City workers (myself included) have to go to work no matter how bad the weather/streets are.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I am a guidance counselor, this is my 7th year.
I have NEVER not gone in on a snow day, even when my school was over an hour away.
I am here today. Bc I have a loyalty to my STUDENTS.
I am on here for the first time bc I am babysitting in the auditorium.
I think that both sides have valid points.
But I also want to say that when you are not a DOE employee you really DON'T GET IT. CAN'T GET IT.
Things are very political and there are a lot of factors here.
I do not claim to get your gripes or the inner workings of your job.
So some of the really makes me
I guess we can all make a good argument depending what side of the fence we are on.
ETA: And here in Bayside we got a foot of snow. NOT the cple inches people mentioned of the "city"
Again NOT complaining but also not interested in people and making teachers the bad guy

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
Posted by MrsRitaB do that many people have jobs where they cant take a sick day to stay home with there kid?
and im asking seriously not trying to be snarky just curious because i guess i just never had a job like that
just to add to the others' responses, many of my clients dont work in a traditional setting where they get benefits- health insurance, sick time, vacation time. many of them work only part time, in domestic capacity, or in factories. They usually dont have enough $$ to take an unpaid day to watch their kids. the benefit that their kid gets being in school, nutritionally and educationally outweighs staying home, especially in NYC today where the roads are clear.

I know this has been said before on most of these threads, but this is not a Bloomberg thing, it is not his master plan to force teachers to commute in. NYC schools are rarely if ever cancelled. Ask anyone who grew up in the city, recently or even our parents ages, several of whom have already posted the same thing, they rarely close. Does it make it more difficult for teachers that live outside of the city? Yes, but this is not news and not Bloomberg, it's the city, that's it.
I went to NYC schools and I work in them now.
I know they never/rarely close. Does not mean it is safe or a good decision.
While I agree with you that it may not always be the safest for those coming in, I just think, regardless of anyone's feelings about Bloomberg, it should not be painted as "his" doing. What's "his" point, and what is "he" trying to prove, and what is "he" thinking, etc. This is/was/pretty much always has been the way the city has run for years and years and years, long before Bloomberg was ever in the picture...it's nothing new and not "his" idea. That's all I'm saying. I hope everyone has a safe commute in to whatever town they're going to and whatever job they're going to do.
Honestly, maybe its time for a change/ I thought elected officials were leaders, not followers.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
And for all those people who say no big deal just call in. Do you know how unsafe a school can be when more than half the staff is out? There is never any chance of doing anything worth while on a day like today. It is just babysitting. I was always one of the few teachers who made it in cause I lived in Queens and had 4 wheel drive. It was just silly. ANd some kids came in just cause they wanted perfect attendance. Not cause their parents needed them to go.

I was just about to come to say this.
We had less than half our kids out (good neighborhood , perfect attendance) and more than half our staff.
It is chaos and if I were a parent I would not feel safe having my child in the building with the amount of adults.

Again NOT complaining but also not interested in people and making teachers the bad guy
Teachers aren't the bad guy...I just know a lot that complain about summer vacation being over or going in when it snows. These are the same people that tell me how important they are to society (I do not disagree). Well, if you are so important to society and with educating kids, the ones that complain should maybe make it sound like they truly want to be there rather then it just being a "job."

I love my vacation time. I relish in it. And when it is time to go back I do so with a smile bc I know what a wonderful choice I made in picking my career.

But it's not just schools. ALL city agencies and government offices are open today. I'm sure they all get it too.
In fact, when schools were out during the blizzard AND 90-95% of mass transit was not running, all city employees had to use personal days if they could not make it in. My point is, it's not just teachers who are affected or getting the sh*t end of the stick. It's a cr@ppy situation all around.

I never said it was just teachers.
And I am not talking specifically about having a snow day.
I am talking about people who know nothing of what it is to work in a school, the inner workings etc. telling those of us who work in schools why things are the way they are.
Basically know it all
I am not a lawyer and I do not walk around telling those who are what they should do and feel and why. THAT is my point.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I was talking to my hubby about this (we both have nutty jobs where the world will be ending and we are expected at work) but we both agreed it'd be great if some employers/state-funded institutions paid for hotels for their employees.
That way, people are nearby and can arrive in their hotel before the snow starts and be relatively close to their job.
I've had jobs like that in the past that offered it, and it worked out so well. Then, no one had to take a sick or vacation day, everyone was still safe, and business resumed.

Just to give a quick example off the dome.
Poster says then just call in sick if it is unsafe.
It is not that easy.
People need to be in a school for a school to run, children to recieve aforementioned lunch.
Sure people can say "if you dont like it use a sick day" but someone better man up and get there or schools can't run.
Responsible people come in. Get shaft.
=
inner workings of a school.
ETA: And before someone says every job has this. I KNOW. But I do not claim to know about or try to give direction on how one should handle it if I have experience in the situation.

guess what ... its a shhitty situation all around. get over it people. by now, you are either at work or you have made the decision to stay home.
as i've said before, the decision to keep schools open was made. it was the right decision for some and maybe not the best for others but it cant be both ways.
next time schools are closed, people are going to be pizzed that they had to call out from work because they had no one to care for their children.
such as life. get over it.

excellent point and I agree.

I don't think anyone tried to say how to handle it. I know for myself, people asked "why" the schools needed to be opened. why kids needed to go there or why parents needed them to be opened. and I am sure every school handles it differently. when I was in school, we had bigger/longer gym classes, assembly, combined classes etc. you have to make it work. it's not ideal, but it's a better altnerative for a lot of parents and kids.
and of course people get the shaft. I am sitting here at work with a sick kid at home b/c my tean needed something done.
and you know what...the OTHER agency we needed is CLOSED. talk about ********! so I am here b/c I manned-up, only to have it bite me in the ***. and this is govt. we don't get extra points for doing the "right" thing.

If every neighboring bank, firm, restaurant etc. was closed you bet your bottom there would be threads about it.
