I swear I'm not trying to be snarky but we're not discussing your area, which I do believe got hit hard. Topic is NYC schools and in NYC it really wasnt that bad at least in most areas.
I think they are saying it wasn't that bad in NYC (hence the subject of the thread)... which it really wasn't at all. different areas were hit differently. Sometimes NYC is hit worse than LI... It goes different ways.

If they know we will be getting a good amount of snow (a few inches at least) it's best to declare a snow emergency for multiple reasons... 1 being we can get federal funding if we need it... and even more importantly 2 to keep people off the roads so the plows can get through. They do tandem plowing which requires 4 plows and a snow spreader... they go back to back (like literally plow up against the wheels of the vehicle in front) on a diagonal slant to get the whole street... with cars on the road it's impossible to complete that specific task. So really... staying off the roads during a storm is a MAJOR necessity.
I do understand the contradiction some see in terms of "stay home and off the roads" but schools are open. The real point of the stay home and off the roads are really for during the storm and plowing efforts. They should have declared this in the blizzard a few weeks ago.
And the real truth of the matter.... because bloomberg and his sidekick goldsmith took the heat for treating the blizzard preparations so lightly and are now under heat for it, they are going to be overboard with caution prior to any storm for the rest of this season.
As far as whether schools should or should not be open... I honestly don't have too much opinion on it... it is what it is. I stayed home from work today because i didn't want to walk the normally 15 minute walk to the train in the snow and being pregnant, but that was my choice. I also went to catholic school and public school. and with the Catholic school, we honestly didn't get too many days, but public schools typically get even less snow days. Once I came into school during a snow storm and i was THE ONLY GIRL STUDENT who showed up. It was literally me and about 30 boys for the entire grade. THE ONLY GIRL. it was kind of weird.... after that I usually just stayed home during snow storms if school was open.
I will say that I'm sure those of you who are upset over not having a snow day today... you will be happy when you aren't working that extra day at the end of the year. You never know what will happen for the rest of the month or feb or march... so depending on the number of actual snow days taken you don't know if you will have to make some up later in the year. It's a give and take.

That's fine, I get that, but I would venture to say that MOST people who are teachers in NYC don't actually live in NYC.

Really... you would have to take a poll across all the teachers to determine just how many live in NYC or other areas. It's a generalization. I'm sure there are many that live elsewhere and there are also many that live in NYC; I have quite a few teacher friends who teach for DOE and live in one of the boroughs. Hopefully those living in NYC made it to the schools to make up for those out on LI that couldn't get into the city today.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
BC really NYC can't make a decision for NYC schools based on the snow LI received. They make their decisions based on the general area they serve.
ETA: as would LI. LI won't be making their school closing/opening decisions based on snow in the boroughs because there are some teachers that live there instead of on LI.

Actually that doesn't happen. Like I previously said it would have been a wash. We have more days than LI. We actually have more days than the state dictates that we must have.

But the children who go to the schools do and the mayor, DOE, etc. who make the decisions represent the interests of their constituents, i.e. the residents of NYC. I know several people who were forced to take personal days today because they live in LI and their kids go to school in LI and were home even though they work in NYC.
As others have said, in a city full of poor people, there are many, many people who when they have to take a day don't get paid, who live paycheck to paycheck, many children who get their only full meals in school. There are a lot of considerations which I would think are different than suburban schoiols, none of which those of us who aren't the decision makers can fully appreciate.

Well if you look at the rest of this thread you'll see how NYC has only closed a handful of times in the last 20 years.....2 of which were last year and no we didn't have to make them up.

while this might be true for some it's not the case for all.
Even so... I don't think the city makes this decision based on this aspect... it may be a factor but i feel like the root of most if not all their decisions is well... MONEY. Maybe I'm just jaded and think all politicians are just soulless, selfish and evil... but I just don't see them doing much for the better of well anyone... I see them doing things and making their decisions based more on the money aspect. I hear that the city loses money when schools are closed. I'm not sure how... does anyone maybe know this?? Do we get funding based on the number of days schools are in session or something??

Going overboard to make sure roads are clear seems like a good result to me, even if it means schools are open and teachers are forced to take personal days. People died because ambulances couldn't get through unplowed streets last time.

Yes I am pretty sure the schools lose state aid for the day if they are closed.

sorry... i don't have it in me to read 8 pages of this. I don't mean that snarky either. I know they don't close often... but they do close at times... I live in queens and went to school in queens, so I know first hand. What my question really was.... Why have I heard many times throughout years, teachers complaining at the end of the year for days being tacked on due to days they had to take throughout the year?? Are those days that were taken for other things?? I know with 100% certainty that there have been teachers who complained about this... so I'm a bit confused because it seems to be the opposite of what you are saying. Did they add more days of school on as of recently (within the last few years?).... resulting in a change on the possible tack on of days?

Yes that is what she is saying. NYC has 185-191 days of school every year. You only need 180. There is never a give back there.

that's exactly what I thought too...
this is the reason they tend to never close the public schools. Private schools wouldn't receive this funding and thus it's irrelevant to close or not.... but with NYC public schools it's a money decision.
doesn't everything usually boil down to money???

How much snow was in your driveway today? Was it still snowing when you left for work? How much snow was on the platform for the LIRR when you waited?

Maybe, but I started working for NYC Board of Ed about 14 yrs ago and we never had less than 186 days of school

OK well IDK where that idea stemmed from. But it's def something I heard first hand, multiple times and throughout years. But if it's not the case then I take back that one part of my post. The rest of my original post I still stand by. Honestly... that really wasn't the main point of what I was saying anyway. it was just a side note. My real point was the declaration of an emergency is to keep people off the roads for snow plowing efforts.... not necessarily for after the snow. it's impossible to plow with cars all over the roads during a snow storm due to the tandem plowing method they use.

Let's see, there was 10" of snow outside. I am lucky enough to not have to work today, but my DW did. I got up and shoveled her out so she could get to work. She is still at work and won't leave until her day is complete. Sometimes it takes longer to get to work, sometimes you have to wake up early to get to work, and sometimes when you have a day off, you have to get up and help others get to work. I completely agree - money is certainly one of the many considerations. All pulibc schools (city or otherwise) lose funding based on snow days. I just think there are other considerations as well, many of which I imagine are unique to a school system which serves 1.1 million children across the outer boundaries of socioeconomic status.
