Not for nothing (though I usually hate that phrase) how many people on this thread are actually reading the responses before replying? I think just about every question has been answered so far
Wait you mean the answer to my question that has also already been posted 27 times might have already been answered, and more than once??? interesting.....
Pffttt sorry, my mistake, don't know what I was thinking, obviously that's a ridiculous idea

School isnt childcare..it's school. I dont know when it turned into a babysitting service. When I was growing up, thats not what school was about. When did it turn that way??
always. it's always been that way. maybe not for you. but for many many many kids, it was either school or home alone. school lunch or NOTHING.
if it's too dangerous for you, by all means, don't go.
having the schools open takes nothing away from you, unless you count the sick day. your child gets marked as absent. fine. that is your choice.
closing the school takes choice and much needed services away from so many people. why? when many areas are ok and the choice is available.
like another poster said no one is ever going to be 100% happy. it's a tough job. I don't envy the position at all. and I am certainly not going to knock him for it.
do that many people have jobs where they cant take a sick day to stay home with there kid?
and im asking seriously not trying to be snarky just curious because i guess i just never had a job like that
When you step outside of your little bubble - yes, there are many many people in NYC who live like this.

I'm not a teacher but WOW he's a moron! Is he trying to prove a point that "his streets" are cleared this time?? Does he realize that not all teachers live in NYC???
yep I think that's what he is trying to do it is very upsetting! I know it was no where near the last storm but come on!
However, I do think that he is keeping the schools open just so that parents do not have to take time off from work to take care of their kids (this is just a thought)

ok so I am not a teacher in the city but i am employed by a company that does not close for anything - ever.
i understand why everyone is so heated, especially if you live on long island, suffolk in particular but its NOT that bad in the city... yes, a snow emergency was declared last night BEFORE the storm hit. they predicted way more snow in the city than the city actually got.
if the streets are clear and the kids/buses can get there, how can they close?
my office is open today. i could have gotten there (a 45 minute commute on a good day - Massapequa to Oceanside) and I was forced to take a day since my son's daycare is closed.
the LIRR is running. roads are clear (at least Nassau going West)...
not looking for drama here but the reality is, the storm was NOT that bad for most of Nassau and the City.
Should have closed... no doubt. My school has 300 kids out of 1000.....700 kids out! They live in the area and didn't come, complete waste of time.
Since when does Bloomy go along with what has always been done? Hello 3rd term!

guess what ... its a shhitty situation all around. get over it people. by now, you are either at work or you have made the decision to stay home.
as i've said before, the decision to keep schools open was made. it was the right decision for some and maybe not the best for others but it cant be both ways.
next time schools are closed, people are going to be pizzed that they had to call out from work because they had no one to care for their children.
such as life. get over it.
excellent point and I agree.
I am not even arguing about the snow day. I just hate that so many people give their opinion where education is concerned. I honestly don't see it as much in any other profession.
THAT is my gripe here. NOT the snow.
I think that's because there are no lawyers, admin assistants, bankers, chefs, etc. posting about having to go to work today. Maybe there should be threads for other professions too?
If every neighboring bank, firm, restaurant etc. was closed you bet your bottom there would be threads about it.
but arent the majority of banks, business' etc open in NYC at least, thats what ive been reading. almost everything is open and operating as normal...

Apparently here in the south Bronx where you would figure many of the parents are desperate and need the "babysitting" so they could go to work, 70% chose to keep their children home. I wonder how they are getting lunch?

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I will be one of the first to say that this really wasn't a terrible storm. It did not warrant a day off. BUT a delay would have helped.
First of all, as a NYC teacher, I live close to my school and went in. It truly was babysitting. I had 9 kids out of 27. NINE!!! But we had a fun day! My kids who came in had a great day. Other classes had to combine to cover teachers who had to take the day. And when I lived on LI, I did take the day rather than commute.
One poster brought up a VERY valid point. In some schools, it is MORE dangerous to have fewer adults because of the population. It is a VERY risky situation.
On the other hand, there are a tremendous number of children who do count on school for the only food they will eat. While we love snow days, they do suffer.
Someone, I think Jackie, brought up an often overlooked point.
I feel like the Mayor often forgets about his other 4 boroughs. He mentions how Manhattan streets are clear. And on the tv, they are! They are beautiful!!! But they are for $h!t in his other boroughs. School is open but the roads around them are not plowed.
If you aren't going to close or even have a delay, then ALL streets should be cleared and there were PLENTY (saw with my own eyes) that were NOT touched by a plow and we're talking 30 minutes to school starting.

I said IF. All LI schools and every private/Catholic school in Queens was closed. This is bound to start a thread on why NYC schools are open.
IF Chase, Morgan Stanley, etc. closed employees at PriceWater would likely start a thread.

it doesn't matter. the other 30% percent are obviously there and need it.
you know what, I don't care what any of you do. you think it should be closed. fine. be angry. be upset.
NOTHING else in NYC is closed. except the federal courts. and that is where for whatever reason you chose to work. the mayor of NYC has to do what is best overall for the CITY. not for the outlying suburbs, with totally different snow falls and needs.
eh, whatever. this is wack. and the argument is old.

I am not a NYC teacher, but I teach on LI. I am appalled at this. I think a HUGE problem is that I have never seen anything really publicized about this. It needs to be all over the news that Bloomberg is being hypocritical declaring a snow emergency yet allowing teachers and students to risk their lives to come in. Something needs to be done to showcase the craziness of this situation!!!
Honestly, I don't get this. I didn't think the snow was that bad and I live on LI. In Brooklyn, there was 6 inches of snow. All I thought this morning was "My kids could have gone to school this morning." But, they were closed nonetheless. I believe it is also easier for LI schools to close because there are snow days already built into the school calendar. NYC does not build in snow days and, thus, those days need to be made up somewhere (which usually means at the end of June).
The fact the NYC teachers choose to live on LI shouldn't matter at all.

Not to dive in, but NYC always has more calendar days than any other district in NY....we don't need to build them in...they are there or we are there...

My dh works for the NYPD and told me he had a really difficult day at work...Why? Because schools were open and every was out on the roads, when most should have stayed home. If the schools were closed, they would have stayed home! It sets a bad precedent.

Actually this isn't true. We have more days than Long Island schools so it is a wash for us. We didn't have to make up the two last year.

Let me say AGAIN, as I did on another thread, that this was a BAD storm for my entire area and if I was a teacher there is NO WAY that I or anyone around me could have gotten to work if I wanted to. It took my DH THREE HOURS, with HELP, to shovel our DRIVEWAY.
I am shouting yes because I am just so annoyed with people who don't think this storm was bad
I personally don't care if the schools or anyplace else closed but when will people stop saying that it wasn't that bad?!?!?!?!?

exactly!
We already work more days than on LI or that we are required to work according to NYS. We do not need to make up days.
Plus IDK if this is true, but I heard they would not add on to June because there would be issues with the bus contracts and etc..

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
If they know we will be getting a good amount of snow (a few inches at least) it's best to declare a snow emergency for multiple reasons... 1 being we can get federal funding if we need it... and even more importantly 2 to keep people off the roads so the plows can get through. They do tandem plowing which requires 4 plows and a snow spreader... they go back to back (like literally plow up against the wheels of the vehicle in front) on a diagonal slant to get the whole street... with cars on the road it's impossible to complete that specific task. So really... staying off the roads during a storm is a MAJOR necessity.
I do understand the contradiction some see in terms of "stay home and off the roads" but schools are open. The real point of the stay home and off the roads are really for during the storm and plowing efforts. They should have declared this in the blizzard a few weeks ago.
And the real truth of the matter.... because bloomberg and his sidekick goldsmith took the heat for treating the blizzard preparations so lightly and are now under heat for it, they are going to be overboard with caution prior to any storm for the rest of this season.
As far as whether schools should or should not be open... I honestly don't have too much opinion on it... it is what it is. I stayed home from work today because i didn't want to walk the normally 15 minute walk to the train in the snow and being pregnant, but that was my choice. I also went to catholic school and public school. and with the Catholic school, we honestly didn't get too many days, but public schools typically get even less snow days. Once I came into school during a snow storm and i was THE ONLY GIRL STUDENT who showed up. It was literally me and about 30 boys for the entire grade. THE ONLY GIRL. it was kind of weird.... after that I usually just stayed home during snow storms if school was open.
I will say that I'm sure those of you who are upset over not having a snow day today... you will be happy when you aren't working that extra day at the end of the year. You never know what will happen for the rest of the month or feb or march... so depending on the number of actual snow days taken you don't know if you will have to make some up later in the year. It's a give and take.
