OK - going to Florida at the end of February... Have a bunch of questions
We are leaving Feb 23 and coming back Mar 1 - so Cailen will be almost 11 mts (on Mar 4...)
He may be walking by then - what type of shoes should I get him? I feel Robeez won't be good for warm weather... and I want something sturdy for his feet, but can't spend a lot of money...
Also, do I need a bathing suit, or can I just put him in a swimmy diaper?
Any suggestions for the plane? What will I need? He will be sitting on our laps... will he scream from the pressure in his ears?
Any BTDT suggestions in general for packing, travelling, etc? We will be staying with my grandma, not a hotel...
TIA

Re: OK - going to Florida at the end of February... Have a bunch of questions
You should get him some soft sandals - i got a great pair for ds at Old Navy last summer that he loved over all his stride rite sandals that Nana splurged on.
Get him a bathing suit and one of those stretchy tees to wear in the pool - it will keep his skin covered and when he is not in the pool he will be more comfy.
Target and Walmart have a small selection of summer stuff out (i guess for those going on vaca) - definitely check it out! :)

Re: OK - going to Florida at the end of February... Have a bunch of questions
My experience in traveling w/ DS (at 4 mos and 6 mos) both times staying w/ family....
We packed only the amount of formula (powder) and diapers we needed to get to the destination. My mom and my dad (1 trip to each) bought diapers for when we got there and we bought formula and food when we arrived. I made sure to leave extra room when I packed at home, so that when we got to our destination, I could pack up the rest of the diapers we didnt use (my dad bought a BIG box of diapers--we were only there for 4 days).
As for being on the plane, Troy was much younger than Cailen will be. What I did (as he doesnt take the pacifier) I had a bottle w/ water and a bottle w/ formula. I gave him the bottle as we were on the way to take off and when we were starting to decend. I gave water if he'd recently eaten.
**I did not buy water in the airport** If I needed water, I waited til we were on the plane and got it for free! When we headed to the airport, I went w/ water in the bottles and said it was sterilized nursery water, which is not available in the airport for purchase.
The ONE flight we did not have a seat for Troy, he was on my lap, but it was a 9pm flight--he took the bottle on take off, and slept the WHOLE flight-even landing.
GL!!

Oooh - Target is cheap! I'll check it out - but I'm afraid to buy him anything now because he keeps growing each month, I'm afraid he will outgrow it even if I buy 2 sizes larger!!!

We are heading here in March.
I was in Target today and I did see bathing suits out for babies (I was in the Setauket store). Also saw sandals too.

Re: OK - going to Florida at the end of February... Have a bunch of questions
I've made the trip to FL 3 times so far with Jake.
First time was for his 1st birthday. The trip went very well for us. (the trip at 17 mos was a whole different story )
Chances are he won't be walking by then, but if he is he should be in his first pair of walking shoes anyway. Otherwise, no shoes (but that's me).
Things I did to make the trip easier/better:
- rented a car with car seat because A - my mom drives a 2 seater B - I don't like to depend on others to get around C - I didn't want to lug around a car seat the whole time
-I brought the single serving (8 oz) RTF formula cans with me for the plane ride
- this was key: I scheduled the flight so that it would be naptime by takeoff
- packed familiar naptime comforts for the plane: his nap blanket, a book, a stuffed toy
- stroller is a must, check it at the gate; lightweight travel or umbrella stroller is sufficient
- don't let him have a sippy or bottle in hand when getting ready to head through security (they rip it out of their hands leaving you to deal with a wailing child for the next 10 minutes, big meanies )
- don't preboard
- don't book exit row seats
- I just brought enough food/drink/diapers for the plane ride; then I did a mini-shopping when I got there. But my mom's grandma instincts took over (shocker!) and she actually was nice enough to already have a lot of things there for me like diapers (she called in advance to find out his size), wipes, and baby wash.
-bottle (or paci if he takes one) during takeoff and landing to help with popping the ears
That's all I can think of for now... GL

Why shouldn't I pre-board?
Because you will have to sit on a germ filled airplane while wrangling your squirmy baby on your lap for an extra 30 minutes

Because it means you just sit on the plane longer. With an infant that could be bad news. It might be that Cailen is ready to pass out at that point so you might want to go for it, but generally speaking - babies are happier in the stroller being pushed around, at the gate where there is more to see...you can carry him, let him walk a little, get some energy out etc... rather than be cooped up and restricted on the cramped plane for longer than you need to be.
It can take up to 1/2 hr for everyone else to board and finally start taxi-ing. Plus, once the plane engine is running, it kind of works like a car where it helps lull the kids to sleep.
Some one on here gave me that advice, I followed it and now always do. Thanks to whoever it was!

Re: OK - going to Florida at the end of February... Have a bunch of questions
We just went to florida last week with Cadi.... They didnt have any pre boarding for children on Delta. Her ears were fine we gave her a sippy cup during take off and she didnt make a sound.... We had her in our laps but that was really hard I personally will not do that again....It was too much for me and my dh had to hold her the whole time because I just didnt have the strength. She didnt cry the whole flight. We were sooo lucky she just wanted to look at everyone. Any questions please let me know we just did it and it was easier then I thought... Oh we bought our own car seat and just had this fabulous bag that we checked with the car seat in it and I am soo glad we did it that way... We had our light weight McClaren with us and that worked fine
