Ok LIers...serious question.
I've read that there are cancer concerns and cancer clusters and such.
but if you live in such an area, what has your community done...your tax dollars done? what have you done?
have you participated in any studies?
is drinking bottled water your saving grace?
I am curious...is that the end of it
there is a high rate of cancer in my town so I drink bottled water.
is that it?
someone please satisfy my bewilderment and curiosity.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
i dont live in LI but i live practically IN JFK airport AND i have to say that it comes up every few months that our proximity to the airport causes many cancer concerns and also allergy problems and general breathing problems
what do i do about it? nothing. . . hope it doesnt hurt someone i love and move on
where can i move that is completely safe? what can i do? ask them to move the airport?
i have enough phobias - i know my defeatist attitude stinks but oh well

I have no answer for it, but I will say that I don't think it's just the water. I think there are clusters do to lifestyle and enviroment and genetics..
Environment and genetics both have something to do with it.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
I've read numerous studies on why people think there are "cancer clusters", and I haven't seen any consistency. I honestly don't think anyone really knows what is causing it. It's probably a combination of things. We don't have cancer running in our family, and I haven't heard any real issues around my neighborhood, so honestly, I haven't really thought about it.

I agree. Without very intense, in-depth studies, it is impossible to pin it down to any one (or more than one) cause. T
My personal thought is that it is mostly genetics. It tends to cluster in certain areas because many people who are related to each other live in that area. I do think environment plays a factor as well. The high prevelance of EMF frequencies from power lines have been thought to maybe be a source. I can see this as a much more likely scenario than drinking water, since those frequencies do have a certain amount of radiation, and radiation IS a known cause of altering DNA which causes cancer. But I think that genetics is the leading factor.

Bottled water causes cancer, though. http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.asp?id=69827-wegmans-bromate-bottled-water
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0320-08.htm
Drinking filtered tap water is the sole reason I *don't* have cancer.....

Oh yeah, I quoted you. I cannot remember 20 questions.
I am not an engineer or whomever works with water. I have not participated in any water studies but I know my parents croaked young of other issues. I know I have a fighting chance not drinking the kool aid or tap water in this case. So let me drink my bottled water in peace.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
As far as cancer cluster are concerned, I chalk that up to pure coincidence (I.e. 3 men in my neighborhood (true story)died within one year from lung cancer... they all smoked.... coincidence).
I drink tap water, but I think I have a higher chance of getting breast cancer because it's on both sides of my family, NOT because I live on LI and drink the water.
I can't live my life wondering and worrying where the next sickness is going to come from or what's causing cancer these days. It makes it no fun!

quote away!
I am not saying you should or shouldn't drink water if you think you are in danger of drinking the water in your community..not at all.
I am just curious to know what, if any, other measures people that live in a known cancer cluster take, beside arming themselves against the drinking water.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
FYI- My friends mom who lived in North Shirley and developed cancer twice. She thought it was the drinking water and hired an Environmental Company to test her water and some other things. Turns of there was a underwater stream of contaminated water flowing from Brookhaven Labs to her water supply(she had well water, I believe). They proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt and sued Brookhaven Labs. She won the law suit, however, the deal was she was not aloud to go public with this information!Yup you heard me right, if she told, she would not get the money she needed for her medical bills and living expenses. She risked it and went on Montel Williams and told. However the big powerful company was able to squash it will little backlash. BTW: High tension wires are also known to cause certain cancers(such as brain cancer) It is not just the water.

It sounds to me like the woman who sued Brookhaven Labs settled her lawsuit, for $$ in exchange for not going public. Had she won a lawsuit, it all would have been public knowledge (as court proceedings are). It would have been all over the news (which it may have been, but I never heard about it before now).

Not sure the truth behind it, but my sister once told me for every year you breastfeed you reduce your risk of breast cancer by 10%.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
it does give me some peace of mind to drink my bottled water. I don't trust the tap filters either.
Also, after time, the tap water doesn't taste good to me anymore.
So there, I said it.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
I will say that when I worked on LI I would NEVER drink the tap water.
I don't know how contaminated Mineola is, but I didn't want to find out.
but the questioner in me would wonder...have there been any studies in cancer rates betwee drinkers of the tap water vs bottled water in these cancer cluster areas....is there anything else I should be/could be looking at to further reduce my risk...should I move? should I task my local politicians to figure this out.....
as far as I am aware, my area is only a crime cluster and I try to take appropriate preventative measures..and if I see something, I say something...

So if you breastfeed for 10 years your risk is 0% because you reduced by 100%? This can't be true.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
Certain cancer clusters are due to environmental reason. There was a plume in Port Jefferson that was attributed to improper disposal of hazardous waste by a nearby industrial company. Other residential areas built on old farmland have resulted in cancer clusters due to arsenic in the soil. I also think plumes near large factories or laboratories cannot be a coincidence.
What do I do? Hope for the best. Cancer runs in my family. I don't drink tap water, but mainly cause I am not a water fan.
ETA: I also do not eat meat and avoid most dairy.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
I think it's a bunch of crap... A very close friend of mine had breast cancer - so severe that at 36 she had to have a full mastectomy and go through six months of chemo. She always drank bottled water, ate extremely well, was extremely fit and breast fed both her kids.
If you are going to get cancer, you are going to get it. There's not much you can do to prevent it.

I agree there is a highly genetic component to it, but I do feel there are some external factors that "help" it along (for lack of a better term).
I honestly think it has more to do with sick buildings than the environment.
I used to work on Old Country Road in a large building and one whole group of workers kept getting sick and getting cancer.
When they tore that building down the things they found confirmed our fears.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
Here is what I don't understand:
People are afraid the LI tap water causes cancer. Why only LI water? Why not water in other parts of the country? I am sure you will find cancer clusters everywhere.
Most of the bottled water comes from some muncipal source.

Re: Ok LIers...serious question.
A good deal of Long Island was, at one time, farm land either growing produce or sod. A large amount of pesticides and chemicals went into the ground on these farms. When that land was sold, houses were built on it. Those chemicals are still in the ground. Over time this has an affect. The chemicals may not have gotten down far enough to contaminate the aquifier, but, they didn't just disappear either. If I were buying a home on LI at this time, I would stay away from areas that were at one time farms. To me, this just makes sense.

many other places get their water from resivoirs - we get ours from the ground (wells)
