OMG! Seriously I cannot take this anymore!
ENOUGH!!! First they tell me it's cancer, then they say it isn't, and now, yet again, the doctor is telling me he thinks it is cancer, and may very well be inside his lung tissue itself.
So now they want to do a biopsy of his lung tissue. The procedure, of course, requires general anesthesia, and they are wavering back and forth about doing it because my father's heart condition is so poor that the procedure itself might kill him.
I can't take this anymore. This is the worst rollercoaster I've ever been on

Re: OMG! Seriously I cannot take this anymore!
Beth, my 80 year old aunt just had a similar situation. Initially, she was told she probably had lung cancer (based on a node that appeared to be changing) and the doctor wanted a biopsy. She lives 6 months of the year in Ct. and six months in Montauk. Since she wasn't thrilled with the Ct. doctor, she consulted with a doctor at Southhampton hospital who told her that at her age a lung biopsy is not necessarily an easy procedure and recommended a PET scan instead. She then consulted with a physician at Sloan who also recommended the PET scan.
Turns out she didn't have lung cancer but further testing revealed a hematological cancer (which is very treatable and has a high cure rate). So I guess my question is, have they considered a PET scan and why is/isn't it an option in a situation such as this??
I know you must be completely overwhelmed and as always I pulling for you and your dad.

I don't even know what a PET scan is! He's at one of the best hospitals in Philly so I was relying on the doctor's knowledge, but when I visit him today at the hospital I'll definitely inquire about it.
The doctors told me yesterday that they received all his medical records, and based on that, they now think he only has a slightly elevated risk with doing the procedure. He did undergo bypass surgery last year and was ok with that, so I would assume one year wouldn't make THAT much of a difference.
The only problem here is they have to drain the fluid and I think the only way of doing that is doing the more invasive procedure. I don't know, this is why I never went to medical school - thank you so much for the information and I'm definitely going to discuss it tonight with the cardiology team

Oh Beth, I'm sorry I'm late in seeing this
Sometimes, I think as much as doctor's know, they also don't know... to be told that news, then have it retracted, then say it is... ugh... as if your head isn't spinning enough.
I would definitely try to get a 2nd opinion.
