OMG so sad...Girl, 3, Wanders From Home, Freezes To Death

State Police investigate outside the home of Lisa and Doug Weronick after their 3-year-old daughter, Cassandra, wandered off and died in the freezing cold night.

It's the kind of story that makes you want to lock every door in your house and never take your eyes off your children: A 3-year-old girl is dead after she wandered away from her Mountaindale home in the middle of the night, and on one of the coldest night of the year.

A newspaper carrier found the child on a rural road. Cassandra Weronick was lifeless in a snowbank, dressed only in a t-shirt and a diaper.

"There's not too much you can say about it other than its a sad, sad event," said State Police Capt. Wayne Olson.

Olson said the call first came in as a missing child report a 7 a.m. when parents Doug and Lisa Weronick realized Cassandra had wandered out of the house sometime during the night. A short time later, the child was found a half-mile away, dead apparently from exposure to the bitter cold.

At the Spring Glen Grocery, the owner, Ramila Patel, told CBS 2 the parents often stopped in with Cassandra and their two older boys.

"I know the family, husband and wife, [they're] wonderful. This is so sad, oh my gosh," said Patel.

The Weronicks told State Police the toddler had wandered away once before, but had been found after a brief search.

Police say the child had figured out how to undo a lock and a latch on the front door. Cops believe the family dog barked at 3 a.m. when the toddler wandered outside. Her mother got up and found the front door ajar, but she didn't check on the toddler.

"The dog appeared to have been the one responsible for the door being ajar so the mother closed the door, locked it and went back to sleep," said Olson.

The investigation continues, but police say there are no signs of foul play, just a tragic set of circumstances.

I saw this on the news earlier.

This is so sad. And believe me I am not saying the parents are at faultAnd I'm sure they are beating themselves up over this. BUT how was this child able to do this AGAIN! The doors should have been more secure.

I agree. This is a sad story, but honestly, how could the mother not check on her children after she found the front door open in the middle of the night?? I could never go back to bed after finding the front door open without first making sure that there was no one in the house and my kids were safely in bed. Sometimes these stories make me Chat Icon

This is a really sad story. I wish the parents would have changed the lock or deadbolted the door at night. Obviously a child wouldn't be able to reach a deadbolt. Also, the mother should have checked on the toddler after seeing the door ajar!

Horrible story...and I agree...I would have checked the entire house before I went back to bed if I found the front door open.

ITA. The girl has a history of doing this. We installed a lock at the top of the door since my boys were fascinated with opening the door. It cost less than $5.00. Her death seems so senseless. Chat Icon

Re: OMG so sad...Girl, 3, Wanders From Home, Freezes To Death

This is a terrible story.

My sister used to sleep walk. My parents put a lock on the TOP of the door (one of those latch things) and she climbed up and unlocked it. My dad heard something, woke up and saw the doors open...he looked outside and found my sister up the block sleep walking. So, believe me....no matter what the parents did the child could get through it.

I understand that - but if you found the door open in the middle of the night, would you just go back to bed and not check on anyone? Especially with a child that has a history of wandering out of the house? That seems very odd to me.

That's awful - I can not imagine how that mother must feel knowing she just closed the door and went back to sleep .............

But I don't really 'get' that ?? -
If I woke up @ 3 am to the dog BARKING and the door open, i'd be kind of freaked out .........I don't think I'd simply close the door and go back to sleep . ......???Chat Icon

yeah, something is not adding up, ESPECIALLY if the girl has done this before

I hate to say it this way, but the mother could have prevented her child's death if she would have just checked on her Chat Icon

What a terrible story. I truly feel for this family. But I agree with some of the other posters here...how do you not check the whole house and all the kids when waking up to your dog barking and your front door open?
