The parents just werent on their game - they should have checked and rechecked and had two locks on the door - I have a 3 year old and there is no way she would be able to open one deadbolt let alone two. Such a tragedy but I do feel the parents were negligent.

its so sad. Unfortunately the parents should of checked on the kid when they noticed the door open in the middle of the night. It MIGHT of saved the child's life. Parents make mistakes and I am sure they are heartbroken over their mistake.

Re: OMG so sad...Girl, 3, Wanders From Home, Freezes To Death

Just to give a little perspective here:

As a parent who also happens to have a dog reincarnated from Houdini, I'm not sure that it would have occured to me to check on Logan.

Our dog has a history of getting seemingly impossible to open doors open.

If I saw him there and the door was open, I would have probably assumed it was him too and gone back to bed.

Those poor parents must just be beside themselves. Chat Icon

well I hope this story now will serve as a reminder that children are smart and I would always make sure to check on them if anything like this happens Chat Icon

Mountaindale, NY has a population of 766 people. The possibility of an intruder probably never crossed their mind.

It's such a tragic story and I think calling the parents negligent is just plain mean. She's probably beating herself up enough over it and to call them negligent - again it's just MEAN.

I can't. I simply can't read any more of these stories. Every story about a child breaks my heart. These poor children need a chance to LIVE. Why do these things happen to these innocents?? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was just going to post this. Sullivan is the next county over from us...it is RURAL. far more that I expected for just 2 hours out of NYC.

it's easy for us to sit here and call her negligent...we don't live her life or lifestyle...but it's different. the mentality is different, and so is the thought process.

the idea of anyone, less a CHILD freezing to death is just so unbelievably awful. that mother must be BESIDE herself with grief. God bless them all. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Let's call a spade a spade here...part of being a GOOD parent is looking out for your children. This little girl has done this before, yet the mom saw the door open and did not even check on her?

If that is not negligent, I do not know what is

eta - either way, negligent or not, I am sure this family is going to suffer and deal with that fateful choice forever. That poor baby Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am sure she is beside herself and sad just as any mother who lost their child.

But the fact that this couldve been prevented when it happened before makes them negligent.

not everything that can be prevented makes it inherently negligent.

based on HER experience, she had good reason to think it was the DOG that opened the door.

based on her experience, she didn't think to check on her daughter.

we dont know the circumstances surrounding the last time the daughter walked off...so perhaps that ONE incident alone was not enough to outweigh the other possible scenarios.

life is not always cut and dry.

To me this story makes the parents negligent and doesnt make much sense. They couldve prevented it, cut and dry.

If their child did this in the past, why didn't they have an alarm system?

One that would trip if the door was opened?

Or at least, set the door to "chime" when opened?

Re: OMG so sad...Girl, 3, Wanders From Home, Freezes To Death

The town they live in has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that if their child was capable of opening a door and wandering out into the night ONCE, then they should have used enough COMMON SENSE to secure every door in their home to make sure it didn't happen again. And then to find a door actually OPEN and not check? OMG...We only get so many chances in this life.

At the time, when my goddaughter was only 2, she knew how to open every door in the house. When I watched her overnight, I barricaded every door in their house and probably slept 45 minutes the whole night....and that wasn't even my own child!

None of this diminishes the fact that my heart breaks reading this story. Chat Icon

G, it does not say anywhere that this is what went down the first time.

IF that was the case, then yeah, I could see coming down hard on the mom.

I think it is callous and irresponsible of the media to throw it out there that she had previously "wandered" off but gave no other details about that incident...knowing full well the conclusion that this is a repeat incident would be drawn.

This is just my two cents here, but it is so easy to say what the parents SHOULD have done. However, we must remember that we are all human. Hindsight is always 20/20. It is so easy to point the finger at the parents and say what they did wrong and that you would never do it...but never say never. Things happen, unfortunately. Anything can happen to any one of us at any time. None of us are expempt from tragidy.

Let's just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for the girl and the family and stop saying what the parents did wrong. It is a tragic situation that hopefully we will never be in. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally agree with you ...
However.....*IF* a similar situation has already occurred in this family, then what are we, the public, supposed to think?
I would be just as likely as you to say that yes, tragedies do happen. But if the tragedy could have been avoided due to previous experience with it and nothing was done to prevent it from happening again....THEN I have a problem with it.

Again, we don't know all the circumstances, and yes, it is a DEFINITE tragedy.

The way it was worded in the news was - This was not the first time an incident like this occurred. The daughter wandered off and was lost and than found in the neighbors house.

This leads me to suspect it was more than a small thing where she wandered off. They even said the parents had put other locks because of the previous incident but they are guessing she figured out how to open it.

Just wante to add what was said on the news. Ppl can formulate their own judgments on the validity.
