I totally agree Not only has the little girl wandered off before, but the parents KNEW she could open the door...as a good parent wouldn't you look into finding a way so that she CAN'T open the door? Maybe a lock thats a bit higher up? A chain? Anything??

Just to give a little perspective here:
As a parent who also happens to have a dog reincarnated from Houdini, I'm not sure that it would have occured to me to check on Logan.
Our dog has a history of getting seemingly impossible to open doors open.
If I saw him there and the door was open, I would have probably assumed it was him too and gone back to bed.
Those poor parents must just be beside themselves.
well I hope this story now will serve as a reminder that children are smart and I would always make sure to check on them if anything like this happens
Not sure I really like what your tone implies here.
Hug or no hug at the end.
I was not implying anything but to say that we, as parents, need to always look out for our children. what is not to like about that?
sorry if you took offense to my tone

Re: OMG so sad...Girl, 3, Wanders From Home, Freezes To Death
how do ANY of us know that they are NOT good parents?????
pretty presumptuous if you ask me.
i'm SURE they're killing themselves with guilt...and will have to live with that guilt every single day....that poor baby

It seemed to me like you were implying that I personally should learn a lesson from that story.
Like I don't take care of my son because I wouldn't have looked for him either.

It was by no means a personal attack but I think this story SHOULD make all of us more aware, that's all
eta - after hearing this story, if this happened to you, would you still not check on your son?

Having this story fresh in my mind, I probably would.
But under normal circumstances, like I said, I would assume it was the dog.
This is just not the first time you have been really quick to condemn someone for making what I percieve to be a human mistake.
You were ready to hunt down the woman who accidentally left her baby in the car when she thought the father had the baby.
It just seems to me like you think you are above making any mistakes.
And that any of us who admit to being human are awful mothers/fathers/people.

Lauren, I agree with you. Not just one poster, but many, seem to have become very judgmental. I'm glad to have posters like you, Beth and Barbara that help put things in perspective.

interesting...I guess some of us can't have differing opinions. YOU deem them human mistakes, I deem them carelessness
I really cannot believe your post
YES, I think this mother was negligent, YES, I think the mother who "forgot" her child and left her to die a terrible death in a hot car was negligent - your JOB as a parent is to go above and beyond to protect your children.
why am I not allowed to have that opinion when you clearly have yours?
eta - the more I think about your post, I think it was INCREDIBLY unfair and cruel to single me out as some heartless person when MANY others had the same opinion when it came to the story about the girl in the car and MANY other people have the same opinion as I do about THIS story. really unfair, leighla

I singled you out because you quoted me and I felt like your response was a knock at my parenting.
I agree, it's my job to be a good parent.
But please realize that every time you say that some random person in the news is a "bad" person for doing something, it is tantamount to saying that ANY of us that have made that mistake in the past are bad people too.
It must be nice to be able to concentrate solely on being a perfect parent.
Some of us have more stressful lives then others and while we want more than anything to be the perfect parents stuff happens.
Do we want it to happen? No.
But it does.
We don't know this woman's whole story.
I can tell you that living my life these days is like running a marathon.
At 3:00am I'm barely functioning after chemo, a full time job, running a house, taking care of DH, DS and the dog, figuring out how to pay bills, sign wills, answer my blackberry whenever my boss calls and be responsible for a department full of people.
So would I have looked for DS? Probably not.
But you saying this person is a bad parent for not doing it is then calling me a bad parent for maybe doing the same thing in her situation.
And, for better or worse, you are one of the more vocal people on this topic and others in the past. You voice your opinion very strongly and, IMO, in a way that leaves no room for debate.
You are right, everyone else is wrong, end of story.
That's just the vibe I get from you and your posts.
I'm cool with you having an opinion, I just want you to see the other side of things.
