The more I think about this, I am starting to feel nothing but anger towards MTV.
Here they are exploiting these teen mothers for ratings at the expense of their children's safety. How, in good conscious, can these camera crews and other employees of the show just stand around and watch as this baby is put into dangerous situations. Granted, they are things that happen every day, but it's not every day that you have lots of other people standing around watching it happen. Could you honestly just watch as a child is about to fall off a bed? Or watch as a baby in the sink is starting to turn hot water on? I am just baffled at how the people working on the show can literally just stand there and watch, record it for a TV show and not step in to prevent this child from being potentially harmed.
What kind of support are these girls getting from MTV besides a paycheck? Are they providing them with parenting classes (for Farrah) or anger management classes (for Amber)? I understand that these girls don't have to do the show, that they are making money from it, but they probably feel as though they have no choice because it is helping them support their family.
I guess I am just taken back a little by the harsh comments towards Farrah. She is a child who had a baby. She comes from an absolutely insane mother. She needs help and millions of people are just watching her make mistakes week after week, making very harsh comments about her. I don't think it's too far from the truth to say that many moms on this site have made some of the same mistakes and received sympathy and virtual hugs after it. I think she may be missing a little bit of common sense, but if I was a teenager dealing with supporting myself, a baby, bills, and a crazy family, I would probably be royally screwing up too.
I would like to see more outrage at MTV for just sitting back and watching these things happen.
This is how I feel too.
Farrah is still a child herself IMO....and I feel badly for her and think she needs a lot of help, encouragement and guidance to become a good mom and work through her "stuff".
Farrah may be a child..but she chose to have a child. She chose to raise her and she chose to move out on her own. Maybe her family is crazy, but there are other services out there to help her. I'm not saying accidents don't happen, but she did catch the baby before she fell, then walk out of the room leaving her on the bed. Then she goes out in the pouring rain, brings nothing to cover the baby and no diapers. She borrows towels from a car wash and fashions them into a diaper. I feel bad she got scammed and I know what it feels like when you feel like everything in you life is going wrong. But, you have a child. It's time to grow up and do what you have to do. Sophia should be her #1 priority. It angers me because I've known too many people personally who have children too young and they don't take it seriously. She needs to be careful, people are seeing this show and forming opinions about her. This show just angers me. It glamorizes being a teen mom. And the camera men (if they were in the room) should have helped Sophia!! I was watching 18 kids and counting and the cameramen help them ALL THE TIME!!! A child is in danger..you help.
Sorry I don't agree, your assuming she can act like an adult and seeing how her mother and father are, we can easily assume how sheltered she was, her parents told her to stop seeing the babys father and she did...she has never had to do anything on her own...of course theres going to be a huge learning curve.
I We cannot assume they are grown up enough to even see whats wrong in these situations. It's sad, for the babies first , but the mom's too.
I also don't think she had much of a choice to have the babu, she said that in her therapy episode, that her mom made her have the baby.

I didn't get to that part last night, but my heart really aches for that poor girl (Farrah). I feel like she struggles internally more than the other girls, without any real support system in place. Her mom is a whackjob, the father of her child is nowhere to be found, and she's living all by herself with her baby. We all make mistakes, particularly when we are overwhelmed...
The father actually passed away in a car accident I believe. I always wonder why she has no contact with his family and whose choice that is. I feel like maybe they could help her and wonder if they want to see their grandchild. Does anyone know?

poor sophia. How could she leave her on the bed alone like that?
I want to go scoop up DD from her crib and hug and kiss her.
OK, let me preface this by saying that I haven't watched the episode, but I saw some other comments on the Celebrity board and I gather that Sophia fell off the bed.
I just want to point out that ANY time a mom on this site posts about how their child fell off a bed or a changing table, EVERYONE replies with kind words about how "accidents happen" and that "it will be OK" and "don't be so hard on yourself".
Was Farrah upset that her DD fell off the bed? If so, why doesn't she get the same sympathy that it seems every other mom on this site gets who has something similar happen to them?
This is really just a general question and there may be more to it because I haven't seen the episode. It's just something that I was wondering.
I think you need to see the show to fully undersatnd. Previous eposide she is moving into a new apt and leaves the baby in the infant carriee in the HLLWAY! Allsows the door to close behing her when she enters the apt and starts unpacking some stuff.
It's just constant negligence and something is going to happen to this poor baby. Also, left her in a sinkfull of water and left the room.
ditto, if you don't watch the show, then you really don't know why we comment about this. Farrah has done several things to put that baby in harms way.

Oh, I have seen the show and I have seen the episodes where the baby was left in the hallway and in the sink. I just didn't see this episode. And I agree that there are definite issues with the things that have happened to Sophia.
In the same breath, all this shows to me is how much help this girl really needs. She obviously has no idea how to properly care for Sophia and is doing the best job she thinks she can.
So instead of MTV continuing to video tape her mistakes and possibly risk Sophia getting seriously hurt, how about MTV makes a grown up decision of their own and STOP filming these girls and get them help.
ETA: But MTV will never do that because ratings is what is most important to them. That just speaks volumes to me about how little they care about these girls and their babies.

ok, this is why I'm going back to celebrity board to discuss my programming.
Girls, its a tv show, and you know what, every network has their programs that may not be helping the people. Its entertainment in the form of reality. Remember that all of these people CHOOSE to be on the show and are CHOOSING to cash MTV's paycheck and I do truely think these shows DO show teens the trails & headaches of early parenting. To put fault in the mtv when ALL of us continue to watch???? And why is MTV suppose to care, its a cable TV network, not a non-for-profit place.

I have been watching both shows for years (16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom) and I think MTV's angle is moreso trying to dissuade young girls from getting pregnant in the first place. Especially in the reunions they have the girls constantly talk about how hard it is and really try and get them to portray an image that this is a life that young that young teenagers should think twice about...they should strive to have safe sex (or no sex).
I agree with that message.
Not to say that I don't agree with what you're saying because I do wish that these girls can be the best mothers they could be. I just think that the point of the show is moreso to dissuade teens from getting pregnant vs. teaching them how to be great moms.

exactly. It's a tv show. Yes they're real people, but come on, it's an MTV show for crying out loud. And I do understand the editing they're doing, hell my husband works for MTV, but it's just something to bs about, not take to heart.

I've forgotten diapers...formula...jackets or blankets on cold days. Just this past sunday we had a birthday party in the park to go to. It was time to feed Xavier and realized I forgot a bottle. Luckily I was 5 minutes from home so I ran and got one but it happens to me often

I dont think they do. WE understand how it works, how they are portrayed....These 16 yr old..now 17, 18 yr olds know nothing about life yet. We are all really giving them more adult credit then they deserve at this age.
Plus take a look at Maci and Farrahs lifestyle, they come from money no doubt...they likely never had to do much of anything, and now are faced with huge adult decisions, they are not ready for.
I also get that its a show, but when its a show about teenagers and babies, I think that we can discuss it with more emotion then if it were Wipeout for goodness sakes.

IMO some people need to get off their parenting high horse and realize first off your watching MTV...real brain stimulator there! 2nd these girls given there age are doing a pretty good job IMO, the children are always put first, not neglected, fed, bathed, dressed and most importantly loved. Im sure there are a million mistakes you've done in your time of parenting and if not YOU WILL, everyone does. Just because these moms arent sitting there shoving probiotics down there throats or wrapping them in bubble wrap doesnt mean they are bad moms. You are watching a TV show and where editing is the number one priority to keep the show interesting to people like you....Lighten up ladies not everyone can be the June Cleaver that you all are striving to be.

right, but instead of pulling into the detail place, go buy diapers FIRST. That is the right thing to do. That is where her "bad parenting" decision came in. I have forgotten things also but then you go get them - you dont stuff an entire roll of toilet paper down your kids pants and sit around waiting for your car to be detailed

You have a point, but this was different for me. I actually SAW her actions... didn't just see someone write about it on a message board, how horrible they feel, how they only turned around for a second, etc etc.
Sophia already tried to roll off the bed while she was on the phone and she said she needed to stay on the bed (she's 1 year 3 months old - she doesn't understand). Obviously she knew how easily she could fall off... but she walked away into another room while on the phone a few seconds later and then heard the thump.
YES, her DD did almost fall off the bed once, but Farrah was also dealing with something serious. Her account was negative 2600. The check she depostied for 8k bounced. She is a single mom, living on her own. No help from her parents. If I was a single mom whose account was NEGATIVE 2600 and had ZERO dollars to my name, I probably would of forgotten DC on the bed too. Her mind was probably spinning in a million directions. FArrah is also still a CHILD herself.

but, it's not really just a tv show, is it? I mean, a true tv should would be ACTORS portraying a "real life" situation.
as far as I am aware, these are truly girls who had babies. teenagers with babies.
now, I am a BIG sensitivity to the issue b/c my mother was a teen mom. 2 girls by 19 to an abusive ******* who left her after screwing all of her friends. and who came from a family of fukk ups. my grandparents did finally come around and helped her immensely, and have always loved and cared for us, but without that support I honestly do not know what my life would have been like.
and the thing is, I KNOW my mother tried the best she could. and she made TONS of mistakes. but she loved us and she tried. it's an enormous amount of stress for a teenage girl to face, especially to face alone.
and while yeah, we can all sit here and say "well, she got pregnant so she has to deal" the ideology of that statement crashes into reality very quickly and the fall out isn't always pretty.
I cannot stand "reality" tv in general. but this show in particular, gets my goat.
ETA: I don't have an issue with people watching and getting hooked. my issue is soley with MTV and I truly hope they are behind the scenes giving these mothers, and moreovers, these BABIES some sort of support and help for the issues they are making money portraying for the masses. that is all.

Seriously? Why are you taking this thread so personally? I mean, come on, we were bs-ing about a tv show. You need to relax. I'm certainly no contender for mother of the year myself, but I like to watch the show and talk sh-t about it because that's entertaining to me. Do I think these girls are bad moms? Hell no. Do I know their lives are tough? Hell yes. Do I really care because it's just a friggin tv show? No, I don't really care. That's why I can easily talk about it the way I do.

I've forgotten diapers...formula...jackets or blankets on cold days. Just this past sunday we had a birthday party in the park to go to. It was time to feed Xavier and realized I forgot a bottle. Luckily I was 5 minutes from home so I ran and got one but it happens to me often
I remember someone posted about forgetting a diaper while out at a restaurant and DC pooped. The person recycled the diaper after throwing out the poop. EVERYONE her for "quick thinking". Where are Farrah's?
Look, I don't agree with a lot of Farrah's decisions, but I also remind myself of her age. I also look at the up bringing she had.

By the way my kids watch cartoons, get dirty outside, eat chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese...stay up late sometimes, dont go to the doctors every cough, sneeze, or bump and bruise.
Thats what the television shows/ celebrity boards are for....This has become pure parenting bashing on these poor girls. Some of the parents on this board take whats happened a little too much to the extreme....falling off the bed at 15 months old??? Going out in the rain?? Im sorry but when is the last time the rain has melted a child? Its not like she took Sophia to play at the park in the rain. Making a makeshift diaper out of some towels until she got home...Atleast shes making sure her daughter is dry...yea its a little wacky but come on now. I think its the other parents on here that need to lighten up...
