Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
I am not posting this to stir a debate I just feel myself getting so mad at the 2 stay at home moms comments. I have 2 kids, 7 months and 27months. I work from homw three days a week and am in the office 2 days a week. My days at home are much much more difficult than my days in the office. I am lucky if I get out a few emails and I'm typing this with my baby in my arms. I give SAHM so much credit. With that said, the two women have made comments like working moms don't love their children as much and that they are not willing to make an investment in their children, etc.....I know these atrre the opinions of only two women but they are really upsetting me. I'm sorry, I just needed to get this out. I love my job, but I definitely love my kids more. Kudos to both SAHMs and working moms!

I get upset when i see people like my bosses wife who comes to the office to just sit there while her 2 kids are home ALL day with a sitter. I dont approve of parents who dont have to work and do it just to "get out of the house" JMO

I thought it was a great show. I agree with everyone else at the end of the day you have to do what makes yourself and your family happy.

Re: Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
I personally don't think anyone should judge anyone whether SAHM or working moms. People have to do what is right for them. Whether for financial reasons or just because they want to.
I am not in anybody else shoes but mine so I don't like people judging me and I really try not to judge people either.

Well said. I am too tired from being a working mother to type anything else.

I did not see the show, but I completely disagree with you. My best friend was at home with her DD and DS from when her DD was born until she was 3.5 (her DS was 2) and she literally had a nervous breakdown. She NEEDED to get a job to "get out of the house". She LOVES being a mom and is probably one of the best that I know, but she needed to be able to socialize and bring home some money for her family. Financially, they did not need it, but at the same time a little extra cash flow never hurt any family. We say all of the time, "happy mom=happy babies", and in her case that was being able to work and spend quality time with her family.
I will eventually have to go back to work b/c we need the money, but I can't say that I would never work again if we didn't.

I don't think that's fair to say. I'm a part-time working mom and I'm off in the summer. I've been with DS every day since the begining of June and I honestly am looking forward to returning to work. Now granted, we do need the money, but I think I would still have my job even if we didn't.

Re: Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
I saw this episode too. I think its so unfair for any mothers to judge like that.
Who cares as long as a child is loved and cared for?? With all the awful things that happen in the world its amazing to see this debate lives on.
As a SAHM i would never judge another person for wanting or needing to work!!
I think everyone gets so caught up in needing to defend THEIR choice that it gets nasty and defensive. As a SAHM i'm embarrased by their comments and it certainly doesn't represent all of us.
Its similar to FF vs breastfeeding. Who cares? You can't win.

Re: Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
My opinion on the whole thing is this: It takes a very narrow-minded person to think there is only one correct way to raise a family. I have no problem with women who want to be stay at home moms or women who want to work outside the home. I DO have a problem with someone telling me what I should be doing as a mother.

Well then its a good thing that the women of the world don't need your approval.
Everyone has different needs. Whatever works for each family, is for them to decide. Its not for me to approve or not approve. The only one whose life I need to approve of is my own.
I think its incredibly narrowminded to say that a woman should only work if she needs to. What about women who have their own ambitions? Why should every mother put aside her own life because she can afford not to work?
To each, their own.

Re: Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
I dont approve of parents who dont have to work and do it just to "get out of the house" JMO I don't think any of us were asking for your approval. That is really rude and super judgemental in all honestly. This is THE problem. Why shouldn't a women love her job AND her children. And "don't have to work" is a very subjective thing. Some families want the extra security that a second income provides for their family or perhaps their business is dependant on their involvement. Some people might tell me that I don't "need" to work but maybe I don't want to go without cable, a second car, a vacation and a really nice camp for my children and a college fund for them. Maybe some women 'work" for the heath insurance- which IMO is not optional to have. Who I am to tell anyone, woman or man, that they should NOT work outside the home or that they should work? Each family needs to determine what works for them and each mom needs to do what is best for her and her children.

I can't stand this debate. Women should support each other, not tear each other down. Whenever this topic comes up, there's always arguing. To each their own, I say. Let each woman decide for herself.

Re: Oprah today SAHM vs. Working
This has always been such an interesting debate to me. I did my senior thesis on this in college so I did tons of research! Society puts such expectations and demands on women that we are made to feel guilty for everything!!!
I have read a lot on this topic, and a lot of women feel that they are much better parents when they have a job outside of the home. They like maintaining that part of their identiy, and they feel more confident and happier as a whole when they are contributing financially to the household. Other women feel that they are better parents when they are stay at home mothers because they can devote every minute of their day to the child and know exactly what is happening each minute. Neither is right or wrong. Whatever needs the mom has to meet for herself, so that she can be the most giving, attentive, patient, and supportive mom, do it! And that will be the best choice!

My biggest problem with this debate (and the way it was shown on the Oprah show) is that some families need two incomes -- it's not about wanting to work or staying at home. There is no choice...
