Overheard in a parking lot today...
A father, yelling at his son who had to be 4 or under, "Finish your slurpee or you aren't getting any chips!"

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
so so sad!
DH and I are not healthy eaters by far, but we try to give DS healthy (ier) foods only.
and we wonder why we're so fat as a nation!

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
Maybe it was his once a week treat? I'm not sure one instance overheard in a parking lot is enough to judge a parent....

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
I dont get the problem with this?
Sounds like something out of my life: DS throws tantrum in 7-11 for a slurpee. I buy myself chips. We get outside. After INSISTING on slurpee, DS decides he doesnt want it anymore and wants my chips.
Perfect example of when it would be appropriate to say it. I can think of a million more scenarios.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
Surprised me because I only give DD healthy food. I assume most parents do the same. Yes there are special treats from time to time but I'd never yell at her to finish one unhealthy item to receive another.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
Oh come on people-it's remarkable because he's telling his son to finish one crappy food as a requirement to getting more crappy food. Just the irony is funny.
But, of course, it's about more than just the nutritional value of the food. Sometimes it's about the lesson.
When we took a road trip from NC to NY we stopped at McDonalds (a few times) and I told my DD that if she didn't finish her chicken nuggets, there would be no snack later-I nearly choked on the words since I know chicken nuggets are garbage, but, it was the principle of the matter.
I know there are a thousand scenarios that could make the statement of this man reasonable. However, just hearing this little snippet-you have to admit it sounds funny.

It's better than, if you don't finish your beer, you aren't getting your cigarettes, no?

I don't know. I listen to myself sometimes in parking lots with the boys and I swear I look around and think "God, I hope no one from LIF is listening to me right now" --- "If you don't get into your seat RIGHT NOW I am returning your new toy" --- "Tyler, put down the donut for one second so that I can get you into the carseat" - I am always yelling in parking lots bc I am so paranoid of cars. Kids are friggin stressful to take out. Shopping, the bank, wherever. Maybe this dad was just bribing the son. Maybe this was his treat for being good and the dad had enough. I just know that I am a crazy person with the boys out in public and I really would hate for anyone to judge me because they would have me locked up for sure.
Total ramble...sorry, and I miss you Lenore. I was thinking about you the other day! How are you feeling???

I pretend to yell at DS sometimes, I usually threaten him with tickles. I wonder who has heard me threaten him to finish his ice cream before

If you heard some of the things I yell, you would all
I almost killed ds yesterday because we were leaving the liquor store ( ) and he ran into the parking lot. I was flipping out. People looked at me like I was nuts.

I think I like this answer.
a snack or treat is one thingbut NO ONE. NO ONE needs a slurpee and a bag of chips in the same day, let alone the same "meal".
this is not something to be all " " and get twisted over.
I mean seriously
