I am very judgey.
If I heard someone at a park tell their son, "you only ate 12 sugar cubes, hurry up and eat the last 3, then i will give you chips"
I swear I would feel like that johnny quiones on what would you do would coming running out with a camera crew from behind the bushes.
Why?

Oh come on people-it's remarkable because he's telling his son to finish one crappy food as a requirement to getting more crappy food. Just the irony is funny.
But, of course, it's about more than just the nutritional value of the food. Sometimes it's about the lesson.
When we took a road trip from NC to NY we stopped at McDonalds (a few times) and I told my DD that if she didn't finish her chicken nuggets, there would be no snack later-I nearly choked on the words since I know chicken nuggets are garbage, but, it was the principle of the matter.
I know there are a thousand scenarios that could make the statement of this man reasonable. However, just hearing this little snippet-you have to admit it sounds funny.
My thoughts exactly!!

does nutrients and vitamins cancel out sugar consumption?
your kid can eat veggies all day long...but they are still drinking 15 sugar cubes in a slurpee.
Im sure we are aware, I am - still dont see anything wrong with it.
This is what I mean about these threads and people getting "judgey" about what other people do with their kids.
ITA with you. I don't like my kids having a lot of sugar but I was allowed to have sugary things when I was a kid and I am not overweight and have my share of fruits and veggies everyday. I think if you teach your children good eating habits, they will use them later in life. But...they also will treat themselves which I find nothing wrong with as I love food.
THIS! Life is about balance. It is completey unrealistic to think that you or your kid will NEVER eat bad, never have fast food, never eat cake, cookies, slurpees or chips.
Just wait until they go to college- God knows what they will be putting in their bodies then. I remember what I ate and drank and college- my parents could have fed me 100% organic from day 1 and it wouldn't have matter. I did what I wanted to do.
A slurpee once in a while will never harm you- regardless if it has 19 cubes of sugar or 26.
And I also feel like genetics plays a huge role in it. I ate like shyt as a child. My family didn't have healthy eating habits. Nor were any of us overweight To this day I eat like shyt. And trust me, if weight issues were all about how you eat, I'd be morbidly obese by now...and I'm not even kidding.

Coke?
The slurpee not the drug, but I dont believe a gram of coke contains 15 cubes of sugar - so maybe I should go that route instead??

wow, I'm going through this website & I'm pretty grossed out & now need to rethink certain things that I buy for the house.
As far as the original post, I also thought to myself that this dad just offered his kid crap in exchange for crap but he can feed whatever he'd like to his kid.

I don't know. I listen to myself sometimes in parking lots with the boys and I swear I look around and think "God, I hope no one from LIF is listening to me right now" --- "If you don't get into your seat RIGHT NOW I am returning your new toy" --- "Tyler, put down the donut for one second so that I can get you into the carseat" - I am always yelling in parking lots bc I am so paranoid of cars. Kids are friggin stressful to take out. Shopping, the bank, wherever. Maybe this dad was just bribing the son. Maybe this was his treat for being good and the dad had enough. I just know that I am a crazy person with the boys out in public and I really would hate for anyone to judge me because they would have me locked up for sure.
Total ramble...sorry, and I miss you Lenore. I was thinking about you the other day! How are you feeling???
Awwwww Diana
I can only get on to FB at night so I miss everything! feel like everyone has left me high and dry sometimes
I am feeling huge. Everyone keeps asking me if I am having twins and is shocked when I say no and I'm not due until Oct If this was my first I would be insulted but this being my 3rd I can admit that I am looking huge

Surprised me because I only give DD healthy food. I assume most parents do the same. Yes there are special treats from time to time but I'd never yell at her to finish one unhealthy item to receive another.
I would have thought the same thing as you. Now that Landon is 3 yrs, he is having more juice, sugar, snacks... the amount of crap he ate yesterday at the GTG was ridiculous... but I would not threaten one unhealthy snack for another. I would be GLAD if he chose not to finish something like a slurpee.

Would it have been betterin your opinion if the parent was asking the child to finish something healthy in order to have the chips or the slurpee?
ETA: We only are getting a piece of the interaction. We have no idea what led up to this or what happened after. I would imagine this was more of a lesson on not wasting things. If that were the case, you now have a parent who has to decide if they want to teach a lesson on not eating too much junk or a lesson on not wasting things. We as parents have to make those decisions every day. Maybe for this father, he didn't want his child to waste... and he will deal with the consequences of his decision with his hyperactive child later!

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
What does anyone care? Especially if you only heard that snippet and have no idea what hte full story is. I know someone who has a VERY sick child. He keeps almost no food down. If he's having a good morning and wants ice cream for breakfast, he gets ice cream for breakfast.
And who knows if the adult was serious. When I was a kid and we'd come to NY to visit family my uncle would take my brother and I to TRU and say very loudly as we were walking in "Stop asking! I already told you that you can only get 20 things each!" and then we'd wait to see how many people would turn around and we'd laugh about the reactions on their faces for the rest of the day. We still sometimes laugh about it when we get together.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
I don't think I've ever had a slurpee. 7-11 just made it to my hood a few years ago.
but I am sorry and flame away but some of the responses are rEdiculous.
it cannot be denied that our society is combatting a HUGE (pardon the pun) childhood obesity epidemic.
maybe YOU don't have weight problems or your kids also eat great, but statistics show that MANY children who are eating slurpees and chips at a sitting are in deep deep **** health wise.
these are simply facts. sorry if that offends anyone.
I don't judge the man with his chips or slurpee...I don't care. I feed my kid the way I want to. I give him treats all the time and I don't give a **** of Janice judges me for it. I also won't care if people are aghast watching me shovel chocolate cake in his mouth. of course they don't know what else he's eaten that day...but in the age of extremely large children, I can see why it would be on a stranger's radar.

Like I said, sometimes dh grabs one and we pass it around the car... but I would never go into a store and fill up my toddlers cup-then make sure he finishes.
I agree...finish that whole cup of sugar, then here....have a big bad of sodium. I think its the "making sure he finishes" thing that bothers me. My kids get treats(mostly vegan stuff since my son has allergies.) they don't get slurpies. Actually they would be jumping up and down if I got them their own water bottle since they are obsessed
