Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
I see nothing wrong with it a child getting a slurpee and chips, and in fact, DS got a slurpee and a ag of cheetos at 7-11 the other day c we were going to the beach and I said he could have treats. What you didnt see is a few hours before, for lunch, he had apples/cheese and carrots and celery in low fat ranch.
I think its totally fine as long as its not all day every day. DS is skinny as can be and very active, and perfectly healthy.
I also "got" the OP of threating one junk food item with another but I still dont see the big deal. Maybe its once a month, maybe its not.
Its just one of "these" threads again, where instead of people accepting to each their own, they get all "judgey" based on a snippet they heard and yeah, I my eyes at that.

If you heard some of the things I yell, you would all
I almost killed ds yesterday because we were leaving the liquor store ( ) and he ran into the parking lot. I was flipping out. People looked at me like I was nuts.
you seem like a "get your little *** over here" kinda gal

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
I would laugh at that. No health nut over here, but def. can see how someone would over that sentence. But I wouldn't think about it beyond that instant.
I do say this to DH sometimes when I hear him offer the kids butter, syrup, sour cream, etc. on their food when they're happily eating something plan and healthy. A nice grilled chicken breast and DH is pushing "do you need Marie's dressing on that?"

I dont get the problem with this?
Sounds like something out of my life: DS throws tantrum in 7-11 for a slurpee. I buy myself chips. We get outside. After INSISTING on slurpee, DS decides he doesnt want it anymore and wants my chips.
Perfect example of when it would be appropriate to say it. I can think of a million more scenarios.
Hey, I thought that was MY life LOL

Oh come on people-it's remarkable because he's telling his son to finish one crappy food as a requirement to getting more crappy food. Just the irony is funny.
But, of course, it's about more than just the nutritional value of the food. Sometimes it's about the lesson.
When we took a road trip from NC to NY we stopped at McDonalds (a few times) and I told my DD that if she didn't finish her chicken nuggets, there would be no snack later-I nearly choked on the words since I know chicken nuggets are garbage, but, it was the principle of the matter.
I know there are a thousand scenarios that could make the statement of this man reasonable. However, just hearing this little snippet-you have to admit it sounds funny.
this is how I took it too.
me too.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
I did something similar yesterday. DS wouldn't clean up and I had brought carvel in. I said "if you don't clean up, then no ice cream". Sorry if that would offend somebody.
I certainly don't think its bad parenting or anything.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
That is a shocking statement.
We aren't the healthiest people, but you have to be aware that kids are bigger then ever. My kids are thin, but you still want to instill good habits that they take with them for years to come.
I could see getting one slurpee to share among the 4 of us...but i would not give my 3 year old one and then offer chips

Surprised me because I only give DD healthy food. I assume most parents do the same. Yes there are special treats from time to time but I'd never yell at her to finish one unhealthy item to receive another.
Have you seen all the news this week about the government threateneing to take away fat kids from their parents?
No. Its not safe to assume that everyone does "the same", with anything.
(this is not meant to come across as a flame, so please dont take it as such)

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
Like I said, sometimes dh grabs one and we pass it around the car... but I would never go into a store and fill up my toddlers cup-then make sure he finishes.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
Slurpee and chips are foods that my son does not consume BUT I wouldn't get all judgmental if that's what other parents want to feed their kids. To each its own. I personally find mac and cheese very unhealthy but that's what other parents feed their kids for dinner every other night. Hey, maybe that's the only thing their kid likes...who am I to judge.

Right there with you. My kids eat junk but they also love fruits and vegetables.

Re: Overheard in a parking lot today...
does nutrients and vitamins cancel out sugar consumption?
your kid can eat veggies all day long...but they are still drinking 15 sugar cubes in a slurpee.

This is what I mean about these threads and people getting "judgey" about what other people do with their kids.

Nope but I don't think there is anything wrong every once in awhile having a slurpee. .

ITA with you. I don't like my kids having a lot of sugar but I was allowed to have sugary things when I was a kid and I am not overweight and have my share of fruits and veggies everyday. I think if you teach your children good eating habits, they will use them later in life. But...they also will treat themselves which I find nothing wrong with as I love food.

I am very judgey.
If I heard someone at a park tell their son, "you only ate 12 sugar cubes, hurry up and eat the last 3, then i will give you chips"
I swear I would feel like that johnny quiones on what would you do would coming running out with a camera crew from behind the bushes.
