painting kitchen cabinets
is this a nightmare DIY project?? I'm contemplating doing this to spruce up the kitchen, but am afraid I may be biting off more than I can chew!

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
what do your cabinets look like now? are they wood or veneers (refaced)? are they dark or white? I've seen some episodes of HGTV where they repaint the cabinets and sometimes it comes out great.....what color were you thinking you'd paint them?

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
I don't think you can just repaint them if they are wood- i think you have to sand them down first...

Yes - you have to sand them down first.
DH repainted ours - it took awhile but, once he borrowed my parents hand sander, it was a lot easier.
Our cabinets were a very dark brown color and we painted them white - they look so much better than they did before!

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
I took on this project. While I fully admit that it was a TON of work, it was well worth it. We went from dark brown wood to white. If you are planning to make this kind of a change, you need to sand the cabinets (just rough them up a bit), prime and paint.
The worst part for me was painting the inside of the cabinets. The previous owners of our home were quite dirty and it grossed me out to use the cabinets. Painting just the outside really isn't that bad.
Good luck!

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
i had mine painted for a bs cheap price- no sanding was done but they primed them and painted them white
it made a huge difference! and the nice part is, if it chips, you just touch it up!

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
I did it myself. I took off all of the doors, sanded, primed and painted everything an antique white and added new hardware - It was a time consuming project, sanding, filling the old hardware holes, sanding again, priming, painting, new hardware and rehanging .........but the kitchen looks SO much better !!
- The cabinet are original and all wood, but very plain.

Re: painting kitchen cabinets
i did this 3 years ago. it was time consuming but completely doable. my first suggestion is to go to a paint store like Aboff's not home depot. you need an oil based paint and home depot and lowes doesn't sell them. you have to clean, sand and prime before you paint and try not to do it when it is humid. it takes forever to dry.
