John Mccain has SEVEN children, a blended family with adopted children. And Cindy mother of FOUR heads a multi-billion dollar company.
But I think the point some people have is -how OLD are McCain's children? My problem isn't with having kids in the White House- but rather, can a VP (male or female) be completely focused on their job with a 4 month old child with special needs and a pregnant teen-aged daughter?

I am looking for the ages - but since he is 70
it looks like his youngest is 23

Prncss -
I was thinking the same exact thing. If it was a man who had a similar family situation, I am doubting many people would say he should be at home with his family.
I would say yes he wold need to be home with his family. While I don't think parents should both quit their jobs, they BOTH need to be involved in the process of raising their children. Just look how many vents are on the parenting and relationship boards to those fathers who don't help out etc and most of us are not in high profile jobs. I see too many parents of children with disabilities whose mothers are the ones sitting with us carrying over the sessions and whose fathers do not know a darn thing on how to interact with their child. BOTH parents should be available. I have also seen many marriages fail because of this. How is a NANNY a substitute for a parent? I am 9 months pregnant and having a hard time leaving my child with his day care provider because that is not their job. Unfortunately with the ECONOMY the way it is, I don't have a choice.

That was my point- his children are grown. Palin's are just starting out- and need every bit of attention they can get from both mom and dad. As a parent, I can't imagine being in their position right now and expected to also run for VP.......

See, but IMO, that's still discrimination. If my employer made me answer how many kids i had at home, what their health status was, and what my plans were for child care before hiring me... you can bet that ALL HELLL would break lose. And, supporting that same kind of intrusion for a man, too, doesn't make it any better.

Re: Palin..just some of my own personal thoughts...add yours if you'd like...
My first thoughts on all of this - McCain wanted to use Palin as a big ole pawn, and now it just blew up in his face. I think at the 11th hour the party decided they needed a female (to sway Hillary voters) and a conservative (for obvious reasons). Palin was the first one to fit that bill, and that's as much research as was done. I really doubt that McCain knew about this.
Palin as VP? Honestly (and I hope this comes out right) - I feel as women we have one shot at getting this right, and Palin isn't it. There is way too much on her plate right now - there is a story on Yahoo right now that she hired a private attorney for the "Troopergate" scandal. Combine that with a 4 month old disabled child, a pregnant teenage daughter - and how much time can she really devote to being VP? And let's be realistic here - even in 2008, women still do the brunt of the child rearing. Heck, this topic comes up all the time on parenting and with a few exceptions, the moms are doing most of the work, and none of us are running for VP .

I think comparing an employer of a company and the responsibilities for second in command of the country are like comparing apples and oranges.

Many presidents have had young children running around the White House.

None that have had a severe disability though to my knowledge.

No- neither of his daughters are 4 months old with DS (and will need extensive EI services) OR pg.
Sorry- the Palin family is in crisis right now. Neither she nor her husband should be focused on anything but that.

Just like we try to create a "jury of our peers" in our judicial system, I think its time to have politicians that are more representative of all facets of our population. We've had too many years of people that were born & breed to be professional politicians and have absolutely no clue what the average working class person/ wife/ mother of a child with special needs/ minority/ you fill in the blank feels like. Obvisously wearing her homelife hat & the VP hat would be an extraordiary task for Palin or anyone. Maybe its time to see if this works.

I don't.
And, also, in all of the years that men have been running for office, i have NEVER, EVER heard mention of their kids in regard to their ability to function in their position.
No matter how you turn the words around, it is discrimination, and it's sad that it's women doing it to other women.

If Palin's son were 10 with DS, and her daughter had her baby a year ago, this wouldn't be a blip on my radar.
But considering this is all happening NOW- just 2 months before election day leads me to believe that there is NO WAY she can be properly focused on our country in crisis when her own family is in crisis.

When I applied for my job, there isn't as much scrutiny as if I were to apply for a job in the white house. And unfortunately, I don't think that this situation has ever come up before. However, I do believe that when President Bush was running for presidency his daughters "wildness" was put into question.

Look- he was in office when that happened. Had it come out before the election- it might have swayed some votes- sadly it didn't. Did it effect his performance as President? Yes, I'm sure it defintely did......

As a one-time pregnant unwed teenager & a mother of a child with special needs I don't feel comfortable refering to it as a crisis. Life isn't always a bowl of cherries, that's life. The weak fail, the strong prevail.
