I'm just curious... for those who don't think Sarah Palin should be running for VP b/c she has too many kids or "issues at home" consider yourselves to be liberally minded.

I think the whole idea that since she's a mother who has a pregnant teen and a baby with down syndrome means she should be at home is sexist b.s.
no one said she should be at home, but being VP of the US with a 70 Yr old President means responsibility , and it would be irresponsible to not judge her to make sure she was capable of doing that job.
one of the youngest presidents we ever had was assassinated, thrusting that VP into the presidency. McCains age really doesn't mean she will play a more important role than Biden would.
Of course we should judge her, hopefully we are judging all of our candidates. I disagree with judging a candidate based on their gender, just as I disagree with judging based on their race. To me, setting expections about how her family handles the responsibilty and what parental roles they play- based on a 'mother being a better parent' is judging her based on her gender.

I don't know if I fall under that because I feel that ANY ONE (woman or man) in her position might not be able to give our country their undivided attention. Do you mean "as a woman" or anyone?
I consider myself pretty liberal minded, BTW.

In my opinion, yes. I fully support gay marriage, gay adoption, the right to choose, the right to equality, freedom of religion, renewable energy, etc, etc. I just also think that her priority right now should be her family, and the same goes for her husband. I don't think that THAT is UN-liberal.

I think I would judge her more on the fact that she would allow a 17 year old to marry someone because she is PG than because her daughter is PG.
Again for me, I don't care how many kids she has, that she wants to run for office.
I only care about what she stands for.
- A PG girl marrying at 17 because she is PG - In favor of oil drilling in wild reserve - Pro-life at any cost
She is also a 1st term Governor. Not a Senator. A Governor and she was a Mayor prior to it.
She has so little experience.
All those are very important topic on who she is and what she stands for.
I don't care she is a woman, white/purple or green.
Yes, her son needs her as well as her PG teenager but lots of moms do what they have to do.
I don't think women should say home.
She does have a lot of her plate though. Maybe too much to do her job right.

While I am all for women in the workplace and 100% for a woman in the Oval office, having a child with a disability who is only 4 months old is a whole different ball game. That is my biggest concern. Most of the Presidents and VP's wives do not have jobs and their children have usually been substantially older than 4 months old. Her husband does have a job. So who will be carrying over the therapists suggestions? As an EI provider, (and I am sure her youngest son should or will be getting it) parental involvement is critical to ensuring progress. If she is traveling constantly when is anyone going to have time to carryover their suggestions. While your job should be important, family should ALWAYS come first! On the other hand, the fact that she has a young family is not the only reason I do not think she should be in office. She has little to no experience and I do not agree with her views.
OMGoodness- my thoughts exactly. The road ahead of her family is going to be tough regardless. A 4 month old is tough enough. But a 4 month old with special needs requires much more attention- on the part of BOTH parents.
For those who say, "would you feel the same way if Palin were a man?" My answer is YES.

I'm a little annoyed at McCain for choosing her. I don't know much about her, but I get the feeling she is an intelligent and hardworking woman, and I can respect that. But I really dont' think McCain chose her because he thought she was the best choice. I think he chose her because she's a woman (to get Hilary's votes), because she has a child with Down's Syndrome (for sympathy), because she's young (and he needs that!) and, well, because she's attractive (get the men's attention).
This is my feeling too. the choice seems like SUCH a blatant strategic move, rather than choosing the right person for the job. I'm not so naive to think that these things aren't strategic, but in addition to what Palebride has mentioned, I feel like they chose her so they could have another "historic" ticket.
I am not a historian, but I remember reading that JFK got a HUGE percentage of women's votes because of his good looks and how he appeared on the TV debates with Nixon. She is definitely going to get a lot of attention from people (both men and women) who don't normally pay much attention to politics.
I don't think her personal life should discount her from the job, but I don't think she is experienced enough for the job. My job involves dealing with government and I wouldn't be surprised at all to know that they didn't vet her properly for the nomination.
