Photographers (nikon users)

I LOVE taking pictures and would love to get into it a bit more professionally (im not sure if I will ever officially open a business or just be able to take professional looking picture for friends/family) but I currently have a nikon d60 and want to upgrade. Now should I get the nikon d7000 or the nikon d700? Obviously the 7000 is cheaper but I know a lot of photographers use the 700 and I dont want to go for the 7000 just to be annoyed at myself in a year that I should have went for the 700 because it has better capabilities and takes nicer pics.

So what would you do?

That's a tough question. I think that for me to replace my D60 with either of the 2 you mentioned, I would want to go to the D700, otherwise just keep going with the D60 for a bit longer. There is talk that the D700 will be replaced (or maybe it has been already but I don't know because I am not looking for anything new yet). I'm pretty sure that my friend who shoots professionally uses a D3 and has a D700 as backup and for her assistant but they are very pricey and she bought them after shooting professionally for years, having majored in photography and having had work displayed in galleries. I can understand that if you are not sure what you want to do, you want to have something that will suit you if this becomes your profession but you never know what they will come out with next and then you will want that!

I have the D40... its been about 3 years and normally im the type of person that wants the newest models but i just keep buying new lenses for it and that has curbed me from buying an enitrely new camera... imo you dont really need the top model if you have the right lenses...

I just bought a new camera and did a ton of research and although a lot of the professional photographers use the 700 from what I read the 7000 is an excellent camera with plenty of room to grow!!!!! I personally would prob start of with the 7000 and invest in a really goood lens or two. If you feel like you want to upgrade you can always sell it and use that $$$ towards the 700 in the future!

Before you buy a new camera, I have to ask - are you shooting on full manual yet? Have you read the manual for your camera? Do you know how to shoot in different light?

If not, I wouldn't bother buying another camera.

There is a photographer joke that goes:
A photographer went to a dinner party where he showed many of his photographs. The lady of the house said, those are very nice pictures, you must have a great camera. He said nothing, but when leaving for home offered the following compliment to the lady of the house "The meal was very nice, you must have great pots and pans."

It is less about the equipment & more about knowing photography.

If you are buying something for the sake of buying something, my photographer friends AND my photography teacher suggested if you have a DSLR, investing in better glass (lens!) than a different camera is the way to go.
