If the trip costs us a lot, I will probably not give as big of a gift as usual. I have never felt the bride and groom even expect a normal gift due to travel costs.
If I don't attend, I would send what I normally give though.

I went to a wedding in Florida, was a BM, and gave less than I would normally give because at the time I didn't have a lot of money and there were tons of expenses for the wedding, including having hair/make up done where she wanted. I still gave a decent gift, but nothing like I would have given had it been here and had I not had to travel.

I consider destation weddings anywhere that I have to fly to. If I could drive there we give the same gift, we have been to two destination weddings in the past and we gave a lot less then what we give for closer weddings. We ended up spending a lot of money in flights and hotels and we never stay to make it a "mini vacation". We are now hesitant to respond yes unless it is someone very close to us.
