Poll: To Reopen or Not
By reopen, obviously I mean with stricter social distancing requirements, face masks, etc.
Just curious, because if the majority want to reopen, it's time our politicians realize this. If not, then status quo it is....

Poll: To Reopen or Not
I think it's time. The things proposed in Phase 1 are really low risk (and really not too much different from where we are now).
I'm for the slow phased reopening - and many things in phase 1 aren't riskier than what is allowed to be open now. I mean you can aimlessly walk around Target with your whole family, why can't you get curbside pickup from a smaller retail store...

It's time to reopen. 100%.
People need their lives back. They need to work, make money, pay their bills, see their friends and family and not be isolated in their homes with seemingly no end in sight.

Poll: To Reopen or Not
It is time to start a very slow and cautious reopening. I think the NYC/LI area has to start somewhere, and I believe that start time is now. Like the PP said, phase 1 is really not all that much different than what we have been doing for the last two months. Most people I know believe the whole state should have started Phase 1 over the weekend. To be fair, the NYC/LI area is very densely populated and probably has a hard time staying at 70% hospital capacity when there is no pandemic. The metrics won't necessarily work the same for us down here & as it will in some rural county in upstate NY.
ETA that I don't think the politicians care what the citizens are ready for. We could be starving in the streets with riots daily and they would say, "oh, but that last metric hasn't been met yet!"

This. I have learned this over the past few months. I have become very very disillusioned with this country and the people who run it. It's depressing as all hell

I think it’s time. The numbers are under control. We can do things safely and those who are immune compromised or high risk can take greater precautions.

Yes. I agree that it's time to open. Companies should still have people working from home and we definitely shouldn't have large scale events, but let's just open the businesses on "Main Street".

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not
I believe all of NYS should start Phase 1. My region is looking to start later this week - fingers crossed. I think starting Phase 1 will give people a little bit of hope.
I believe many people will continue to do what they have been doing for the past 2 months. My DH and I can continue to work for home and will still limit our trips out, but it would be nice to see some people be able to go back to work.
I wish public spaces such as playgrounds and pools could open in July. I live in a less dense area so I do not see why these things could not open personally as long as people bring hand sanitizer and wipes with them and respect social distancing.

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not
Yes. As everyone knows, I am pro reopening immediately because I do not see the difference between opening now, or July, or September. However, I do agree with the slow and measured approach. We do not need to have concerts and festivals by June! Just open businesses with precautions. I do think we should allow parks to fully open. Kids are already getting together everywhere the last few weeks.
What I do not understand is why they are opening beaches here but nothing else. Particularly since NYC is not, so all those people will come to LI. It is actually encouraging mass gatherings. I just do not understand it and all I can guess is that it is to generate some state revenue.

We need to start reopening--safely and at the right pace. Humans are suffering in insurmountable ways from the continued extension of the shutdown.

I agree. Which is why I worry about what will happen if LI opens before NYC. Queens is so close to Nassau County, we will get tons of people from Queens coming to eat and shop. I don't blame them one bit, but this is why I think LI & NYC should really be considered one region. We are so connected, especially Nassau county.

I think with beaches I read they are keeping them at 50% capacity. So even if people come in droves, if you aren't in by the time the lot fills up (at half capacity) you are shit out of luck. Which means to me- I'll be getting to the beach by 7 am this summer instead of my usual 8 am So in that sense, it won't be any more crowded than usual- in fact it will be less crowded. That's how they are handling that issue.

yes. Esp since people and businesses seem to be doing it without the official go ahead! So we might as well do it under a controlled way and really Cuomo needs to see that and just do it.
what happens if NYC and LI never meet the 7/7 metrics?. so we never get too reopen and you think people are really not going to go out for that long!

what beaches are considered NYC beaches ( i dont go to the beach so i dont really pay attention to anything beach related)
and as NYC not really opened them. I would hope even though DeBlasio said he wouldnt the governor would have told him you really need too!!
but like Nell said they will close it at 50% capcity so it wont matter.
I feel like I heard ( and this can be a complete lie so dont take my word for it at all ) that some town beaches where you buy passes may limit it this year to only people who have passes so you cant pay to use them. No idea how that works now. But i can see this happening cause i would pissed if i bought a pass then cant go cause out of town people came.
Are there state beaches where anyone can go to?

I think about that too. Like what if NYC never meets it. Will NYC just sit and rot away and crumble? The most iconic city in the world- just.... gone.

I just read an interesting article regarding real estate. It seems NYC residents are eager to move out East and are swiftly buying up property out East. There were 3 houses that went up for sale within a mile of me that sold within a matter of weeks. (Not sure if it’s city people)
As far as the beaches go, Bellone just said only Suffolk County residents only will be permitted at Cupsogue and Smith Point. So if they come out from NYC they won’t be able to go to those beaches. My concern is people will just start parking all Willy Nilly on the side roads because of their entitlement and just walk to the beaches...

NYC beaches- not sure, but I assume like Coney Island, etc?
State beaches you can buy an empire pass for or if not it's like $10 to get in. I believe anyone can go you just have to pay. Robert Moses and Jones Beach are state.

I would hope they would be enforcing that somehow. Like having cops around the beaches to make sure people aren't doing that.

They are enforcing that at a lot of the state parks in my area - they have been popular spots for hiking. There are signs that you must park in lots and parking is monitored.

Coney Island, far rock away, orchard beaches - all in NYC. But even when I lived in Queens, I preferred Jones and Long Island beaches.

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not
I think it's time but slowly and cautiously for sure.
The reality is they have to start opening because people are already back doing their thing. Traffic is way back up. I had to stop at my office to exchange files and there were way more cars there than there were 2 weeks ago. I think if they want to retain any sort of control on the situation, they have to start giving a little bit.
On the other hand, I truly worry about our health care workers and first responders and how taxed they probably are from this go around. We need to ensure people are mindful of precautions out of respect for them. Which I have no idea how they will enforce that but I worry about people being stupid and careless a lot.

I agree. I think things like the mall should be open but with masks and no loitering, for like pickup available or limited shopping, just like you have to wait 6 ft apart and go in the store when the next person leaves, etc. Purell hands before and after entering or exiting each store. We can slowly start doing things like that.

Poll: To Reopen or Not
I think it could start reopening slowly, but I really would like to see masks and social distancing required for some time. I intend to do both and I hope many others continue to do so.
I don't think we will stop everyone from getting it. But I would rather get it when they have better treatments and more knowledge of the virus- especially when compared to those poor souls who got it early and ended up dying on ventilators.
