Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

I think we should be following the guidelines. As long as hospital deaths continue to decline hopefully we start phase 1 next week.

It does make me nervous that as weather is nicer and people are tired of restrictions there will be an increase in hospitalizations. Hoping this process goes smooth!

I think the current plan makes sense. LI/Mid hudson should hit 7/7 soon. if hospitals deaths keep declining, we only need 9 & 11 more days respectively, but it could be sooner if we get under the 5 death average first. NYC is a little trickier because of the hospital capacities.

We are supposed to be in each phase for 2 weeks unless #s go up. I don't think phase 1 will cause numbers to go up b/c it is not that different form now.
The other phases make take longer to get through because more people will be out & about.

But can we enter phase 1 without the tracers? We are behind on that too.

I think it's time. The things proposed in Phase 1 are really low risk (and really not too much different from where we are now).

I'm for the slow phased reopening - and many things in phase 1 aren't riskier than what is allowed to be open now. I mean you can aimlessly walk around Target with your whole family, why can't you get curbside pickup from a smaller retail store...

You can—it’s just up to that store to offer it. Many smaller shops in my town offer curbside (clothing, crafts, toys, etc.)

Poll: To Reopen or Not

If you’re for reopening then go hang out with family. Hang out with friends. Let your kids have a backyard playdate. Technically nobody is stopping you as the police won’t even respond to a call like that unless you’re having a rager with 50 guests.
If the Governor gave the ok tomorrow, nothing is going to be magically different.

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

Reopening safely is critical, and people talk about hospitalization rates going up which will definitely happen as cases increase..of course, very few people think they will be the unlucky percentage of those severely affected by the virus..

In case one needs a reminder of what is at stake:
Ventilation for Covid-19 is a painful intubation that goes down your throat and stays there until you live or you die. It is done under anesthesia for 2 to 3 weeks without moving, often upside down, with a tube inserted from the mouth up to the trachea and allows you to breathe to the rhythm of the lung machine. The patient can't talk or eat, or do anything naturally - the machine keeps you alive. The discomfort and pain they feel from this means medical experts have to administer sedatives and painkillers to ensure tube tolerance for as long as the machine is needed. It's like being in an artificial coma. After 20 days from this treatment, a young patient loses 40% muscle mass and gets mouth or vocal cords trauma, as well as possible pulmonary or heart complications. It is for this reason that old or already weak people can't withstand the treatment and die. Add a tube into your stomach, either through your nose or skin for liquid food, a sticky bag around your butt to collect the diarrhea, a foley to collect urine, an IV for fluids and meds, an A-line to monitor your BP that is completely dependent upon finely calculated med doses, teams of nurses, CRNA’s and MA’s to reposition your limbs every two hours and lying on a mat that circulates ice cold fluid to help bring down your 104 degree temp.

Anyone want to try all that out? Stay home. Stay safe and well

That I'm not sure about--they stats say "expected" which I think means they are in the process of hiring- but it is hard to say how far off we are.

Yes. As everyone knows, I am pro reopening immediately because I do not see the difference between opening now, or July, or September. However, I do agree with the slow and measured approach. We do not need to have concerts and festivals by June! Just open businesses with precautions. I do think we should allow parks to fully open. Kids are already getting together everywhere the last few weeks.

What I do not understand is why they are opening beaches here but nothing else. Particularly since NYC is not, so all those people will come to LI. It is actually encouraging mass gatherings. I just do not understand it and all I can guess is that it is to generate some state revenue.

I think with beaches I read they are keeping them at 50% capacity.
So even if people come in droves, if you aren't in by the time the lot fills up (at half capacity) you are shit out of luck.
Which means to me- I'll be getting to the beach by 7 am this summer instead of my usual 8 am
So in that sense, it won't be any more crowded than usual- in fact it will be less crowded.
That's how they are handling that issue.

what beaches are considered NYC beaches ( i dont go to the beach so i dont really pay attention to anything beach related)

and as NYC not really opened them. I would hope even though DeBlasio said he wouldnt the governor would have told him you really need too!!

but like Nell said they will close it at 50% capcity so it wont matter.

I feel like I heard ( and this can be a complete lie so dont take my word for it at all Chat Icon ) that some town beaches where you buy passes may limit it this year to only people who have passes so you cant pay to use them. No idea how that works now. But i can see this happening cause i would pissed if i bought a pass then cant go cause out of town people came.

Are there state beaches where anyone can go to?

Coney Island
Brighton
Manhattan beach (it’s in Brooklyn)
Gerittsen beach
The Rockaways
Midland beach

There are a lot

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

I think you know my answer. Time to open. Safely with new protocols for sure. But it’s long past time to open

Numbers will rise whether businesses are open or not. It’s summertime. People are going to be out and about. It’s not about getting sick from your local Clothing store at this point. It’s more the backyard hangouts going on already and only to grow as weather gets even warmer. I see pics on FB people in their pools, not with immediate family members either.

There is no way to measure once the #s rise, what caused it. I just hope they don’t take it out on us small businesses again and shut us down for months. I’m
Not sure a lot of us will easily comply next time around

In theory that is what the contact tracers are for - to figure out where/who people were infected from and alert everyone they have been in contact with.

I’m one of the people that said not to open yet. I think we do need to open as soon as we can but I think there needs to be better strategic planning like not open the beaches... open small businesses that can control traffic flow, scheduling etc. not a friggin beach that everyone is going to flock to. Poor planning IMO. Beaches yes make money with the absurd cost just to park at one but to me it’s selfish of the state to not open small business but think a beach is ok Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I work on the inside of this in the hospital and see it first hand and the stress this has caused on health care workers. Partying like it’s any other Memorial Day weekend is going to make this worse, but slow, planned openings will likely show smaller increases then 60% of the island trying to get to the beaches...
Strategic planning of openings, I’m all for but not this half as* plan

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

I think that the only way for everyone to get back to "normal" is for some people to take that first step. So if you don't want to, don't. But the point was never for the numbers to be zero. No one ever said that.

And numbers are dropping still even with people having started to go back to work over the past few weeks and with people starting to socialize more regularly. People are out and about in greater numbers. And still the cases, deaths and hospitalizations are dropping overall.

So somehow we are figuring out how to keep ourselves safe.

Independent of this, just be aware that there will be a considerable spike in late May of COVID cases due to the Memorial Day gatherings and beach goers. If there are things you need to do outside the house or appointments during this time just keep that in mind to protect yourself and family.

This I do agree with. I think we need to start. But NOT a beach!!! A small local business is so much safer than a beach, and would also help people begin to get their livelihoods back. But yet they have to remain closed. It makes zero sense. I did vote it was time to reopen, but not the way it is going. Especially with NYC beaches staying closed until at least June (according to DiBlasio), we will have NYC & LI residents fighting for spots on our beaches. It will be a disaster.
I also agree with the PP directly above me. Everyone said Easter Sunday would cause a spike, it didn't. That beautiful weekend we had May 2nd/3rd would cause a a spike. It didn't. I believe we have reached a rate of low level transmission and if the end goal is most people back at work/children back at school, and a new type of normal in place in 3 months time, we need to begin now.

Sitting on a wide open beach, with 50% capacity, in the fresh air- while all families are 6 feet apart on their own blankets etc is a lot safer, IMO, than being in a crowded Walmart or Target or even a small store.
That's probably why the are doing it at this point.
People can try to flock to the beaches all they want but just cutting the parking lot capacities by 50% which is what they will do will prevent overwhelming crowds.
The field I go to at Robert Moses has so much open space it would be easy to spread out even on a full capacity day- people don't want to because they like to sit on top of each other and the water- but it's 100% possible. Now cut that capacity by 50% and enforce it more and it's even easier.

I am just shocked because there are only a certain few that speak up that they don't think its time yet. Its interesting to see that there are more people.

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

They need to start opening. I am seeing too many of DH's friends lose /close down their business, because they are not able to pay the rent. This is not good, start opening and continue with safety precautions. We cant live like this anymore. If we dont open, people are going to start breaking the rules and do what they want because they need the money.

Poll: To Reopen or Not

At this rate, NYC will be shut until December. Some of those metrics are not realistic for a city of almost 9 million people. I think both Cuomo & DiBlasio will have to cave at some point this summer if metrics are not met. I mean, they were at a high of 900 new hospitalizations a day, and now the average is 50-70, yet that's not good enough. Insane

Are people supposed to wear masks on the beach? What about the bathroom situation at the beach?

It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

I know too many people who want things to open theoretically for others so that their portfolios, sollege savings, etc. do better, but no way would they let themselves or their families take big risks.

The more time that goes by, the less scary this disease will be because of all that they learn each day about what helps to combat it at every stage and at every level.

I would assume you would wear a mask to go up to the bathroom, yes.
After the bathroom I would wash my hands as I always do and I always bring hand sanitizer to the beach because sometimes the soap dispensers are empty. I would assume they would be addressing that now though.

You would not have to wear a mask while on your own blanket/chairs and socially distancing from those around you.
I believe they will be making sure people aren't sitting to close to each other.

I have been going to the beach to walk, and some wear masks, and some dont. If you are with your family and distance yourself, I dont see a need to wear one.
As far as the bathroom is concerned, Im sure there will be a sign that will allowing a certain amount of people in or apart from each other. But if people follow that will be another story

In theory , yea

But if had a bbq with 12 people and then went shopping - and all those 12 people did too. Did they get it form
Kohl’s? Or get it from my house?
It’s going to be close to impossible for a lot of this. Good luck to them

Re: Poll: To Reopen or Not

I'm not sure how it will work out for small business owners. In a lot of cases with the current additional unemployment benefit minimum wage employees are making more than they were working. I'm sure those people aren't eager to return to work.

Additionally expenses for small business owners, rent included will likely still exceed reduced sales/income. Overall people are not spending like they were prior to this. Add in losing the support of people not interested in going out. There are real challenges for all businesses.

I listened to a presentation by an economist who said that small business that closed will eventually be replaced with new business once the economy recovers. For example the family owned restaurant will be replaced by a new restaurant at some future point in time. Very sad.

True but umeployment- even though it's more now- doesn't last forever.
I'd much rather return to my job, even if I was temporarily making more on UE because eventually that's going to run out and then what?
