Poop (w/gross pic), milk allergy & prilosec question

Here is a pic of my sons poop. Is this normal? looks seed like and was a tad mucousy.

I mean if he had a milk allergy, wouldn't it have shown up earlier? We had him on alimentum but it didn't seem to sit well with him. He'd have screaming fits and painful gas for hours. Tried nutramigen- same thing. Finally went to Good Start Gentle and he seemed much better, although not perfect. The ped yesterday recommended we mix the alimentum and good start.

So we did. And today the screaming fits are coming back. What gives?????

If he had a milk allergy, why would he do okay on good start and do badly on alimentum??

The other alternative is that i gave him his prilosec 3 hours later than usual today. I mean that couldn't be the cause right? Then of course in the back of my head are the reviews on the prilosec compound and how it loses it's validity after 2 weeks (which is now).

Anyone have any advice???? I'm ready to lose it once again. Chat Icon

Re: Poop (w/gross pic), milk allergy & prilosec question

how old is your child, and is your child formula fed only, or is the breast milk in there too? if it was a milk protein allergy, you would see streaks of blood...........

eta: what was the peds reason to restart the alimentum if good start was working out better? and prilosec, are you giving it on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning?

My son is 7 weeks. Formula fed only.

Prilosec we give twice a day -1ml each time. Once in the morning and once at night 30 minutes before a bottle.

The good start, his poops were slightly runny and he seemed to have painful burps. But everything else was much better and he was MUCH more content. She suspects he still has a milk allergy, even though the 3 poop test we've done were negative.

Painful gas isn't necessarily a milk allergy. My DS (11 weeks) has had painful gas since day one with no allergy. I have him on Gentlease and it has made it so much better and he is slowly growign out of it. My Ped siad that babies just have sensitive stomachs and will grow out of their gas. I tried differnt formulas and settled ont eh Gentlease sicne it worked the best. His poops do look seedy on occasion. The seedy is less as he is getting older but is still normal.

I would not put him on the alimentum if the Good Start was working.

I can't really tell if there is mucous from the picture. A full blown milk allergy probably would have shown earlier but it does not necessarily have to be a milk allergy but a milk sensitivity (which is milder).

My only advice is to use solutabs. The compound is hit or miss because of the chances for the compounding to be done incorrectly or because of the shelf life of compounds.

How long was he on the nutrimigen? From my understanding nutramigen tastes horrible ( i never tasted DD's) and it takes time, like the PPI, to work. Has your ped/GI thought about elecare or neocate yet?

the poop looks somewhat normal to me for that age. gas can be normal in a child this age, their little tummies are soo sensitive to begin with. make sure you are giving the prilosec at least 30 minutes before, and try some gripe water. Bliss makes one sold at cvs that has chamomile in it. works very well, and you can use it as often as you need it. a milk protein allergy usually presents with blood streaked poop, so watch for that. and just remember, frequently changing formula can also irritate the belly, so give the new formula some time. how many ounces are you doing per feed?

we've done it all... mylicon drops, mothers bliss, gripe water, colic calm, etc etc.

We always give the prilosec 30 minutes before eating. We are very consistent with that even if he screams for 30 minutes straight.

he eats 4 ounces at a feeding

and what is the peds rationale for mixing the 2 formulas? have you seen peds GI yet? if not, thay might need to be your next step. where do you live?

"My only advice is to use solutabs. The compound is hit or miss because of the chances for the compounding to be done incorrectly or because of the shelf life of compounds."

We use the solutabs and it def makes a difference with the prevacid.

Also- each formula has a slightly different makeup so it doesn't necessarily mean you DS does or doesn't have a milk allergy.

And my DS has a severe milk allergy- he is almost 3 and still needs formula and NEVER had bloody streaks in the poop. The doctor would do a test on the poop and find blood but none visible to your eye.

The seed in the poop definitely looked like a milk allergy- we always brought the poop to the doctor for analysis.

She still suspects he has a milk allergy and she saw how fussy he was during a feeding (Good Start Gentle).

We've seen a GI- Dr Morganstern who was as useful as a wall.

The GI said they wouldn't give him solutabs because he's too little and the tabs can't be broken up correctly.

We've brought his poop 3 times to the doctor and it was all negative.

seedy yellow poop is normal, what i dont like is the mucous. that to in still indicates milk allergy

ETA - he is still on Alimentum? he may need a formula WITHOUT milk proteins. in Alimentum, the proteins are already broken down but they are still there. If he has a true and more severe allergy to milk proteins, he'll need an amino acid free formula like neocate Chat Icon

ETA again! we started on GoodStart and it wasnt until 4 months that we noticed changes in DS. It took that long for enough damage to be done to his gut to cause damage (blood, mucous, diarrhea). Once we went on Alimentum, he was better within 3-4 weeks. His allergy was less severe and the broken down proteins were OK.

Maybe your son was OK on goodstart because his gut just hadnt really been severely effected yet?

how long has he been on the Alimentum? I would take him back to the Ped and ask to have his stool tested again to look for microscopic blood. if it is there, I would switch to an amino acid free formula (neocate ... i think that is what its called) Chat Icon

this is all assuming this is caused by a true and severe milk protein allergy!

When there is a protein allergy, most times there is blood in the stool, whether it is visible to the naked eye, or not. Solutabs are not going to break down properly because your little one is still too little. i would give the formula a little time, but call morganstern if you see no improvement in the next few days! hang in thereChat Icon

ETA just re read that you didn't like morganstern? what did he say about this whole thing? what were the suggestions? maybe try Dr Chawla, the division chief in that office.

mucous can also be a sign, but sometimes newborns will have occasional mucous for no reason, or if the formula has been changed. if you're noticing it happening more frequently i would certainly mention it. who is your pediatrician? (the OP)

FTR I definitely saw poop that looked exactly like that when DD was that age (she's 5 mos now and I haven't seen it like that in awhile). She doesn't have any allergies (as far as we know) nor is there reason to suspect that she has any. Good luck!

Honestly he said a whole lot of nothing. We waited 2 hours to be seen first of all. Then he came in and basically rushed us out the door because he was there much later than normal i'm sure.

He said nothing about the formula. He upped his zantac and we go back april 4th. He tested his stool and it was negative. That's it.

I had to call because the upped zantac wasn't working. The NP called me back and was even more useless. I asked about switching meds and she said i had to give it a week (it had been 5 days). I called back at a week and pushed for another med. She told me to try mylanta. Gee thanks jerk! I asked her about nexium, axid, prevacid solutabs, prilosec, etc etc. She didn't help and explained nothing.

I saw chawla 4 years ago with my son and i liked her. However we had to wait a month to see her and morganstern was much earlier.

isn't that what they're doing when i bring in a poopy diaper? Or are they just smearing the poop onto those poop cards for a milk allergy?

yes but has he been tested before? have they ever confirmed blood (prior to changing to Alimentum)? this way, you could use that as a baseline. if there was blood before but no blood now, that is an improvement.

was he ever diagnosed with a possible milk protein allergy?
