Potty Training btdt moms/dads
Please tell me what to do. DS has NO interest in the potty. I have had it for about a yr, he has gone it a bunch of times, but wants nothing to do with it. I tried bribing with trains (his favorite thing in the world) bribing with candy...nothing works. He is turning # in 2 weeks and starting nursery school in September for which he must be potty trained. His cousin just turned 3 and at her party she was wearing big girl underwear so I told him and also told him 3 yr olds can't wear diapers. I plan to start 7/27 the day he turns 3....I need step by step, play by play. what worked for your potty resistant toddler?
TIA!

Re: Potty Training btdt moms/dads
put him in underwear, he will not like to be wet and that may encourage him
for my dd, we just put her on the potty every so often during the day but once we got rid of the diapers, she had 2 accidents and was fully trained, including night time in 4 weeks

Re: Potty Training btdt moms/dads
Not sure if I count as a BTDT mom since I'm in the process of potty training my 2.5 yr old DS right now. But something that seemed to help him make the connection and show interest in going on the potty was making a potty time book for him. At the suggestion of one of his therapists (he is getting EI for speech delay) we took pictures of him doing the various steps in potty triaing (i.e. wearing underpants, pulling down undies, sitting on the potty, holding toilet paper, flushing the toilet, washing his hands etc.). Then using construction paper and text that you create yourself you help your DS make his own book. Help him cut out the words and glue them and the appropriate picture to the page. Like the cover would say "DS Potty Time Book" and have a picture of him smiling on the potty. Then the first page might talk about how he wears big boy underpants now and have a picture of that. And so on and so forth. DS really enjoys going through the book and it did help him get with the process - I still read it to him every morning to set him up for the day. Also I decided to really do what the book showed. So last Friday he started wearing underwear and he only wears a diaper when he goes to sleep. He sits on the potty on his own (we have the baby bjorn one that sits on the floor) and is so proud of himself when he uses it. I make it a huge celebration when he uses it and he really seems to thrive on the positive reinforcement. We have stuck around the house these past days since he isn't yet able to say "I need to use the potty" but I know he'll get there eventually. I figure we taught him to pee and poop in a diaper by having him in one for 2 and a half years. It will take some time to create a new association that he should do those things in the potty now. But I'm really hopeful I'll have him ready for nursery school by fall. I think it really helps to key into your own child's likes and dislikes. Like my son could sit in wet clothes for hours at a time and not care - so just having him in undies and letting him wet himself really doesn't work for us. But for a child that dislikes being in wet clothes - that would probably work great. My DS loves looking at books - so making his potty book has been a great tool. Good luck to you! HTH
