Re: Pray for peace
I'm not going to sit and read everything, but from the first few I got the gist of how people feel. I come from the region, and my experience is vastly different from what was posted here but I will not talk about it, and then get ridiculed and slammed by those who disagree with me. In the end, every believes what they want to, what they are taught. Please understand that will ALWAYS be two sides... an Israeli mother is mourning today, and so is a Palestinian mother, one's grief does not trump the others.
I agree with title of the topic.. pray for peace.

Where does Hamas get money from? What are their sources of funding?

Well said.
I didn't want to post my opinion either because it is not on the side of the majority.
I believe that there are always TWO sides to a story and in this case find fault with BOTH sides. Again, my opinion.
Like it was stated above there are 2 mothers from different sides of the war lines mourning and crying for their babies right now...neither is better or worse then the other, they are equals in this moment.
I pray that we all see peace in this part of the world in our lifetimes, but I highly doubt it given the history.

Hamas is the leadership in Gaza. So, they control all international aid sent to Gaza.
Also, Hamas is part of the Muslim Brotherhood. They receive funding from other Islamic groups in the Middle East and abroad.

Another quick video on the conflict. As described in the video, this conflict is easy to explain but the hardest to solve. Easiest to explain.....Hardest to solve

If you provide reasonable evidence, why would you get slammed? I haven't seen one piece of evidence explaining why Israel is wrong for protecting their citizens?

In a few words.. there is a common rhetoric which reared it's ugly head in one of the earlier posts which I'm too offended and disgusted to repeat.
The videos explaining the other side is out there, please snoop around. It would be far more educational provide more insight than I could do in a few words.

I agree with buttercup here. I am not anti-Israel. I'm also not pro Hamas. I think both governments suck. The average Palestinian and the average Israeli want peace, while their governments continue fighting each other. I pray for the over 600 civilians and the 10's of soldiers killed. In my opinion they are all pawns in a horrible horrible game that no one is going to win.
Then I go on to the NYTimes website and see this http://www.nytimes.com/video/world/middleeast/100000003013682/a-strike-kills-26-family-members.html?smid=fb-nytimes&WT.z_sma=VI_ASK_20140722&bicmp=AD&bicmlukp=WT.mc_id&bicmst=1388552400000&bicmet=1420088400000&_r=1

Are you really comparing a terrorist organization who's stated goal is the destruction of Israel to a democratic , progressive government ? Israel isn't perfect but I don't think the two should be mentioned in the same sentence.

Yes. I am. I think both of their chosen governments suck and are doing absolutely nothing to come to peaceful solution.

I Just want to thank those who provided links and such to help those educate. I knew there was conflict but never really understood it. I am glad I read through some of it so know I have a better understanding of what is going on over there. Thank You!! And I do Pray for Peace! Enough is enough!
I agree Thank you so much for the important education.
I just wanted to touch on 1 thing- someone asked why the citizens aren't standing up to Hamas and why are they allowing Hamas to control them, etc.
I could be wrong, but I would imagine FEAR keeps them from doing anything. If an agent of Hamas knocked on your door, do you think they would ask politely if they could use your home/school/hospital to hide weapons and then quietly go away when you said no? I would think that you'd be shot down dead and they'd do it anyway.

This is a very good point. You also have to realize these people have no where else to go. It's not like they can stroll into Israel or Egypt and settle there. It's a terrible situation.

At some point, if you disagree with the leadership and it is not getting you anywhere, you need to stand up and say enough.
If everyone stood up and said this is enough, we are not going to live with your tactics and won't allow it to happen, it will stop. You need to find a critical mass of reasonable people to end the war. But if everyone cowers in fear, I don't see a reasonable way to end the conflict.
Why aren't more Palestinians taking a stand and saying this is enough to their leadership that they elected?

Both sides are suffering and losing children. But researching online the amount of children killed in Palestine is staggering! As posted on here many places they stay are used for human shields. I feel terribly sad for the innocent Palestinian civilians. They are being overrun by the evil terrorist Hamas. They have no where to go! There is no where to hide, no where to cross in such a small area. It CAN be compared to a prison. What can they do as everyday people.?! Israel has an efficient government who does everything they can to protect her people. The Palestine people do not have that. They have corruption that we can't even grasp.

One of the other reason so few children die in Israel is their defenses. They have put into place something called the Iron Dome.
Basically it intercepts the rockets from Gaza. A lot of them. So fewer fall on Israel. So fewer people/children are killed.
The Palestinian people ELECTED them into office. Its tragic that those in authority bite the hand that fed THEM.
Sad and tragic all around.

You do realize that Hamas only received 44% of the vote in the 2006 election? That means more than half of the population did not support them.

Maybe I'm reaching - but I highly doubt the votes to get them elected were all warranted. Am I the only one that thinks a lot of those votes were more than likely 'forced' votes??
I mean we're talking about a group of people who will do just about anything to get their way...you don't think for a second that getting themselves elected they didn't threaten death upon their people?

Re: Pray for peace
I didn't want to post after reading all of this but can't seem to stop myself.
My grandparents escaped the holocaust and settled in Palestine. My grandfather was in the Hagganah and father served in the Israeli army during the Sinai campaign.
I was born and raised here but I have dual citizenship with Israel and we have many family and friends there- one of which was killed in a suicide bombing in Haifa and her son is now blind.
Does anyone remember the Palestinians dancing in the street on 9/11?
It is horrible that there are so many Palestinian civilians killed in this conflict but Israel has NO choice but to get the tunnels down or she will continue to be bombed. Hamas is a TERRORIST organization that wants to kill Israelis- as many as possible and Israel is a DEMOCRACY that does not want to kill children- that is a FACT. Hamas keeps their weapons next to their children to use as human shields.
To compare the IDF with Hamas is simply outrageous.
ETA: of course Israel is not perfect and has made mistakes in negotiations over the years. I don't agree with the settlements but I also think that it doesn't matter if they build them as Hamas uses the settlements only as an excuse to keep the hatred of Israel alive. No, Israel is not perfect but you cannot compare Israel to Hamas. That is like comparing America to Al Qaeda.

I'm terribly sorry for what your family had to endure. I really am and for your friend who has to endure a life without sight, my heart goes out to him. But I must ask for my lack for understanding, what does the line above have to do with the conflict? Are you saying that Palestinians are anti-American because being anti-American and anti- Israel are two different things.
This what our media beats into us.. and of course to the common man who has no knowledge will fall prey to the enemy of my enemy is my enemy. America and Israel are two different countries.

Re: Pray for peace
Yes, America and Israel are different countries but both are Western democracies with similar principals of freedom.
Some terrorist groups (including Hamas) are are against our western democratic freedom and so they hate both America and Israel.

If you provide reasonable evidence, why would you get slammed? I haven't seen one piece of evidence explaining why Israel is wrong for protecting their citizens?

I agree with bunny wife about not being pro Hamas or anti-Israel. I've done a lot of research & have a lot more to do...it just bugs me when I see a lack of empathy for the people being harmed on one side a and a rose-colored view of the side one supports. I keep reading about these leaflets and civilians only being harmed if they choose to stay but that's not accurate. Here is just one example: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2701043/The-shocking-moment-Palestinian-civilian-shot-dead-Israeli-sniper-lying-defenceless-floor-earlier-hit.html . I happened upon the above article and it reminded me of this thread I was reading yesterday. Wrongs are going on on both sides, suffering is going on on both sides. It's very sad. I certainly don't have a solution....I just hope for everyone to see both sides of the coin in any situation. This is all I will ever say about it on this thread. Everyone effected is in my prayers.
