Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

Oh well, I knew it was coming but was unable to do anything like look for a new job. Who wants to hire someone in their 3rd trimester anyway?

Oh well, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Now there's more time to prepare for the baby's arrival.

Anyone else here pregnant and in the same predicament or worried about being laid off?

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

I just got laid off today. I knew they were doing lay offs as of yesterday and I went home terrified. I had a dr.'s appt this morning and I got in late. They laid off a lot of people this morning and they got me practically when I got in the door. I'm completely numb and depressed. I'm trying to concentrate on the baby because I know right now, she comes first. I think that I'm still in shock. How long did you work at your job. I was at mine for a little over 12 years.

i'm in my 3rd trimester and i stopped working, so i'm kind of in the same boat! we moved to IL and i also said the whole "who wants to hire someone in their 3rd trimester" so i'm settling in/taking a vacation before the baby arrives.

we'll all be okay! promise!

This economy sux rocks!

Wow, I'm real sorry for you, 12 years of service and they can't give you a break? I hope you're at least getting a good severance out of it.

I was only at mine for about 16 months but it still stings getting let go 'cus I love working there... :(

I wonder if it's possible to collect unemployment then disability benefits or both at the same time? :D

I doubt you can collect disability and unemployment at the same time. If you're eleigible for unemployment benefits, that means you're able to work and actively seeking work. If you're eligible for disability benefits, that means you're unable to work.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Chat Icon

I was just laid off, and I knew it was going to happen, I actually came out better this way than staying on maternity leave so it was a blessing...now I have more time on unemployment too Chat Icon

ETA: You cannot collect unemployment and disability...according to the unemployment website, they cannot discriminate against you if you're pregnant, you get more time and more $ on unemployment...

I survived two rounds of layoffs but I don't feel safe yet. I thought I had a little more job security because I was pregnant. You guys have proven me wrong. I wouldn't mind being laid off after maternity leave but it would suck big time if I got laid off before I had the baby.

I thouht thye same thing you woudl think companies wouldn't want to expose themselves to this type of liability. I *think* I am OK because the owner of my company said that they will not be laying anyone off. I work in sales in Higher Ed so we are not hit as ard by the economy

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

I got a descent severence package. When I knew the layoffs were going down, I tried to think positive because there were certain things with my job that nobody really didn't know how to do, so I thought that would've saved me. I didn't think my pregnancy would've made a difference. How it appears, they laid off certain people who were there the longest. I think a lot of my co workers are more shocked that I'm gone than anyone else with maybe the exception of my old boss. I just can't believe after 12 years I have to go back out there to look for work. To be quite honest, the thought scares the crap out of me.

Yup, add me to the list.

My last day at work is 12/5. I will be almost 8 months pregnant at that point.

People are saying it is a blessing in disguise and things happend for a reason.

I am not seeing it that way just yet. All I see is being unemployed with extra expenses coming my wayChat Icon

Let's pray things get better for us girls :)

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

I see the 'blessing' people talk about too...

We don't have to decide between working or staying home with the baby!

We can actually collect unemployment while we stay home. :D

Also, I think you can collect unemployment insurance longer than you can collect disability insurance:D

I was laid off last March...about a week before my due date. I was devastated...an absolute wreck....I thought it was the worst possible thing that could happen with the baby coming so soon.

It really turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It gave me a much needed 2 weeks off before the baby came and here I am 8 months later still home with my little boyChat Icon

It will work out...one way or another!!

I got laid off during BOTH of my pregnancies, I know exactly what you are going through. I was 5 and 8 months when it happened and decided to wait until after the baby to look for a new job. Definitely collect unemployment bc if it takes you longer to find a job after you have the baby, you'll continue to get some income.

I was the one who carried our insurance, so that was a big concern for me when I was laid off. If you're in the same boat and haven't signed your severance agreement yet, use this time to negotiate the terms. Tell them you want an attorney to review so you can know your options (just scare them a little). Then request that they leave you on the health insurance or compensate you for COBRA. I was able to get one employer to keep me on the insurance at no cost to me until my son was 6 months. The other company let me pay the premium that I paid while I was an employee until my son was 3 months old.

Please FM me if you have some questions about my experience.

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

A lot of people at work told me I should not come back after ML anyways....that I should look for a job w/ less stress or that is closer to home. I am still contemplating that, as well. I still worry though that the grass is not necessarily "greener" out there.

The economy is really bad. I am extremely worried about being laid off. My firm has already done layoffs a few times.

Ditto, my company knew they had to cover their azzes when they let me go, that they are paying my medical through May thank g-d, in addition to a severance package, if they didn't offer that to me, I would definitely had gone back to renegotiate and threaten legal action, bc believe me, these companies know they are treading on thin ice laying off a pregnant woman!!!

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

I'm not working right now, but I am a little worried about my job. Even though I have my own class of 25 5th graders, I know that all they have to do is condense the classes and make them bigger, and that will be the end of me.

At this point, I'm kinda going with the mentality of "whatever happens, happens", but if I still lived on LI I would probably be flipping out. In NC we have much more flexibility and have realized that we CAN live on one income.

Re: Pregnant and Just Laid Off, Anyone Else Worried?

I just got back from my ob appt a few hrs ago. My bp was 143/96. Gee, I wonder why? I explained to my dr what happened so she told me to take it easy and to come back next Saturday. She wants to monitor me closely now because of the bp. I have a gut feeling and usually my gut feelings are right, that Miss Shaylie is going to make an early appearance. I'm 32 weeks as of yesterday. So I will definately try and relax and take it easy this week.
