Preschool dilemma
I am looking at South Shore Country Day School & Camp on Newbridge in N Bellmore. It's been around for 50+ years, got a nice warm feeling from the place for my 3yo. The grounds/buildings are very old, but as long as it's safe, I feel good about it.
The problem. Every school I've researched, I've been able to check to see if they have violations etc. After a little investigating online, I realized I couldn't find South Shore listed on the Nassau County site because they are apparently only licensed through the Department of Ed. But they have a toddler program and my son is 3 and would be there for extended day - but, they are unlicensed.
Apparently another mom figured this out last year and put in a formal complaint to Nassau County and it was found to be true that they were operating illegally.
It REALLY bothers me. Anyone have experience there or any thoughts?

Re: Preschool dilemma
No, I probably wouldn't care. They are probably trying to avoid paying certain taxes/insurance. Most small businesses do that.

Re: Preschool dilemma
I don't understand how they are continuing to operate illegally. In the course of my own research I have discovered the daycare is licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services, and preschool is not required to have a license or be registered, but can voluntarily register with the State Department of Education. In trying to figure out the difference (besides age of the attendees) I have discovered it is length of the day the child spends.
If they are operating a facility where a child can attend for more than 6 consecutive hours, then they have to be licensed by OCFS. If not, the license isn't required, nor is the state ed registration.

No - I wouldn't send my DS - but then again I am neurotic and very by the book when it comes to other people and my child.

Re: Preschool dilemma
I don't want to scare you, but isn't that the school where the toddler died a few years back because she ate a carrot out of a teacher's bag? If yes, I wouldn't send dc there.....it was publicized that this place wasn't licensed properly. Again, not trying to scare you. Trust your gut - if you feel something is off, its usually for a reason, kwim?

Re: Preschool dilemma
MY daughter goes to south shore.... so far it has been a great experience for her. I cannot say one negative thing about the school and people who work there!
