President Barack Obama won both the Electoral College & the Popular Vote!!!
I love that he won both. I am very much in favor of the popular vote, but we are stuck with the Electoral College, so it makes me happy to see that no matter what the method used he would have been elected either way!!
Also winning the popular vote will help because it shows that the majority of the nation is behind him, and this will help to unite us now that the election is over.
ETA:
Electoral College Obama = 349 McCain =163
Popular Vote Obama = 53% McCain =46%

I love this, It showed that the people's choice got in. It felt great this year not to be bytching about votes and how many inconsistencies there were as I was in the past two elections.

The popular vote was a LOT closer than the EC reflects though -- and way cloer than I would have predicted, too. I think that really shows how well-respected McCain is in many ways - he had the TOUGHEST run and performed admirably though the result was kind of a foregone conclusion.

ITA!
If you read the Newsweek Op Ed piece, I alluded to this. The op-ed talks about the failures of McCain's campaign and how it was one of he worst-run campaigns ever. While the piece had some good points in it, I disagree that it was the worst-run campaign ever. Considering the obstacles facing ANYONE with the GOP nomination, the popular vote being as close as it is means that the campaign was more effective than people are giving it credit for.

Actually they are saying its more like 7.3 Million votes.
Either way even if he won by one vote ( which I know is impossible given the electoral college) I would be happy, because it means the Majority Rules, so I am EXCITED!!!!

Re: President Barack Obama won both the Electoral College & the Popular Vote!!!
Also, BTW... Not trying to be snarky, but it's President Elect Barack Obama, not President Obama. He isn't yet President and won't be until his inauguration. I know I'm being nit picky but there were a few threads here and on another board where people seemed to think he was already President.
Again, not trying to be snarky - maybe focusing on semantics - but not snarky.

I am totally aware that he will not be offically the President till 1/20/09, but I like calling him President Obama, it makes me happy

And you should be happy, call him what you want, I'll call him President Obama even if its not the correct term at the moment.

I wasn't imply YOU did not know he wasn't already President. However, there were other instances where it seemed unclear whether people really knew or not. Call him whatever you want. As I said, I'm simply pointing out a technicality.
ETA - And I'm in no way trying to take away anyone's happiness with my comment.

I agree - newscasters have been using the word landslide, I don't see that personally.

That's because they are referring to the Electoral College.
349 to 163 is a landslide

I've heard landslide used a lot, too. Yes, he's the clear winner in both the electoral college and the popular vote, but it was closer than it seems just looking at the EC.
Regardless of anyone's feelings on the election, it's nice to actually have a clear winner.

Both Karas understand that. I just wouldn't use the term landslide to refer a victory in this election when the popular vote was pretty close. Yes, clearly he had a huge majority of electoral college votes. I understand why they are using the term landslide. From my perspective, though, it wasn't a "landslide" victory when you take the popular vote into account. A clear, respectable victory for sure, but not a landslide.

i guess landslide is based on interpretation, but with a popular vote that close percentage wise, i would not consider that a landslide

Again I do. But regardless of how anyone of us want to defien the word landslide, he has won the majority of the nation and that was what makes me happy, like I said I wouldn't care if he won by 1 vote, the fact that he won the majority makes me giddy with happiness.

In the 1984 election, Ronald Reagan won 97.5% of the electoral vote but 58.8% of the popular vote.
Not a landslide if you account for Popular vote.....
