Re: PSA about the swine flu and the H1N1 vaccine

Same thing happened to my 2 year old nephew. I was on the fence about whether or not to vaccinate. Having a newborn in the house and hearing what my nephew went through, I decided to give the shot to my daughter. Still not 100% comfortable with vaccinating her, but I felt it was the best decision for my family. Hope he feels better.

I had no idea that you could still get the swine flu even if you got the vaccination. That is scary.

Re: PSA about the swine flu and the H1N1 vaccine

Has he only had one vaccination I assume? Maybe he got the flu b/c he wasn't fully immune or the one vaccine hadn't fully even taken effect yet?

Is that the 2 possible senarios or are the vaccines not working/not the right strain?

Either way I am glad he is doing ok. Chat Icon

So sorry your little boy is so sick! I hope he gets better soon!

This is the 5th case I have heard of who did received the H1N1 shot and still got the swine flu. IMO, you don't know who or what to trust/believe.

Many prayers that your DS gets better soon!

Well it takes awhile for the vaccine to work and you also need the 2nd shot as well so really you are not fully vaccinated against it for at least a month and a half. That's why they really should have had this vaccine out a long time ago. So frustrating.Chat Icon

I'm going to assume b.c she said he didn't get it that long ago he either didn't get the 2nd shot OR he didn't have the full immunity yet - remember it takes about 2 weeks or so to get any immunity - and so if he only just got his second dose OR only had 1 he might not have had full immunity.

frustrating and scary...just when I think I made up my mind..BAM, something happens to make me think different. Ugh, I am so stressed over this!

My heart aches for all the kiddies who are sick. Adults can "handle" it..kids, shouldnt have to deal with this!

OMG. I am glad he is goign to be ok. Our girls got it. The baby gets her 2nd round Dec 1st. She's a preemie so I am terrified.

Glad to hear the vaccine helped save him from far worse.

This is exactly the case.

Nicholas received the first H1N1 vaccine on Nov.6th.

He got the virus on the 16th. There was not enough time for the vaccination to work.

He is due for the 2nd shot (for full immunity) the first week of December.

However, the doctors told me that thank GOD he did get the shot. The shot worked enough to prevent a serious version of the swine flu. Too bad he wasn't vaccinated earlier...this could have been prevented. Chat Icon

Thank you for your well-wishes, everyone. He finally came out of his room and is watching TV. That is a major step for him as he really hasn't left his bed since Monday. Chat Icon

Hopefully all your prayers and the antibiotic is working. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Has he ever had pneumonia in the past? Was he considered high risk? Just wondering b/c my ped. has only seen very mild cases with no complications.

Never!! Nicholas has never even had bronchitis in his almost 8 years of life.

He's only really had some ear infections, colds, and strep ONCE last year in 1st grade.

This came from nowhere. Very scary! ANd I was on top of this from when the fever first hit. This is a very fast acting virus. I just thank GOD I vaccinated him!

Wow...thank god you got him to the dr. so quickly! So scary.

I wonder if there are different strands of the virus going around...some more serious than others?
