PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

I have seen 2 stories in just 3 days already. Please leave a reminder on your front seat or something to remind you not to forget the baby is in the back. I can not stomach the thought of what was going througheach childs head as they slowly cooked to death. Ugh.

It happens more easily than anyone thinks. No one intends to do it, but remember those first months (or year plus in some of our cases)? Remember how sleep deprived, how zombified you were? These aren't bad people, these are usually people who do everything "right" and it is just a tragic occurrence. The biggest factor they have found is a change in routine, the person who forgets is normally not the one to bring the child to daycare etc.

A diaper bag on the front seat, or a stuffy or some other trigger to remind you is a wonderful idea.

My heart breaks for these families.

I totally get that. I can see how it could happen. Especially like you said, a change in routine. I feel so sad for the families as well. It is horrible all around.

Cars should start coming equipped with alarms or something that sense movement inside once car is off.

The father of the 22 month old is now being charged with murder. I'm also on the forgiving side where I believe everyone is capable of making huge mistakes under certain circumstances. Just the perfect storm. This is just so tragic. I can't even imagine living with the guilt and then being convicted of a felony.

And dogs too. God, nothing infuriates me more than seeing this. I call 911 every time, I don't care if windows are down.

I'm surprised people think this is understandable! I have never forgotten my children in the car. Neither has my DH. For an entire work day no less?! I do think he should be charged. Can you imagine baking to death because your parent forgot about you? Ugh.

I think it is. Routines change and sometimes people forget. I don't think people INTEND to let their kids bake to death, but it happens by ACCIDENT.

BTW, my DS is 7, our routine changed today, I have to get him from his after school program and not his babysitter because she has an exam and I asked TWO people to remind me to leave at 5 because it is out of our normal routine.

PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

There is no way I could ever forget to get dd out of the car. It is so engrained in my head that even she she's not actually in the car with me I look in the mirror to check on her and see her empty car seat.

Those poor, poor babies. Beyond tragic.

Not saying it is understandable per se. I would never, no matter what zombie fog I am in, forget my children. First, they make way too much noise, second, I am a stay at home mom and they are ALWAYS with me.the rare times I am alone, I almost have slight panic attacks when I look back and they're not there.

With that said, I can see a person, like a dad or mom who hardly ever travels in the car alone with their child, especially on their way to work, something they do alone normally, I can see forgetting, what I don't get, is8 freaking hours of ooblivion.

Re: PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

This is just so sickening to me. I'd like to think it would never happen to me because I'm one of those that has freak out moments when I check the baby mirror and see an empty carseat. I rarely get out of the house without the kids so I usually tend to think they're with me. Then again, I never have them when I go to work so I *guess* if I were having a really bad/rushed morning combined with the fact that I never ever have them in the morning could maybe, possibly cause me to forget?

I don't know what the punishment should be. If this is truly just an ungodly, horrific accident, then I think the parent would be punished far enough just by having to live with themselves after having done this. Ugh, just the thought of it makes me want to puke. Prayers for those poor babies and families. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

I can see both sides. I have never forgotten a child in a car. I hope that my stress level never reaches that point where I forget something that's so loving and so important to my life. I don't think I would be able to live with myself after something like. I wouldn't care about going to jail. It has to be really hard for this family especially the father. How do you live on???

PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

Never say never.. My Son is 5 so this wouldn't happened. But my DH has forgotten to pick him up from Daycare or thought he had an enrichment class and didn't get him from school on time. I usually do the pick up so when it's put of his routine I have to constantly text and remind him. Yes it's not as tragic. thank God, but people are human. It doesn't mean he doesn't love my son or wants DYFS called.

My brother in law drove to his job with my niece and realized he was suppose to drop her off. Thank goodness he realized when he got to work. Some days she was at the sitter in Bk and some days she went to daycare in NJ.

Those poor babies and parents.. :(

Eta: thanks for posting this as a remainder and to make people more aware.

I have to agree. Forget for a whole day? I know sleep deprivation is bad and many new moms (and dads) deal with it but still...a whole day to forget you never dropped your kid off where you headed?...just does not make sense to me

People make mistakes.. Yes this is the most awful mistake you could ever make and I am sure its easy to say "how could you just forget your child?!" but like others said if the routine changes it can happen. People are so rushed and so tired in the morning. Have you ever driven to work in the morning and later on thought to yourself I don't even remember my commute in? I do this too often.

After reading these stories when my kid was young I have made it a point every morning to look in the backseat as I am getting out at work. Even if I know I dropped him off at daycare. Now looking in the backseat as I am getting out is my routine.

With that being said, I still think he should be charged. If i (god forbid) ever made this mistake I would expect to be charged as well... but thats just my opinion.

No matter what happens and what is "right" or "wrong" this is just so horrible and tragic.

Re: PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

When DD was a newborn, definitely less than a month, we went food shopping. I was in the aisle with her in her stroller looking at something, remembered that I needed something else, and walked away - without her. Five seconds after I did that, I of course, ran back & got her.
So, I GET the change of routine (I wasn't used to going food shopping with a newborn) and I GET the tiredness, business, etc. But, what I DON"T get is how does it not even cross your mind for the whole day?

Re: PSA. Please do not forget your children in the car!!

My heart breaksChat Icon but I honestly don't understand it. I am in a constant juggle with where my kids are going and coming from and I work full time from home so have to juggle that too and I can honestly say I would never forget my child was in the car with me or to pick them up. They are my life and even though my head is ready to explode some days they are my top priority. But that is me and that is not to say others can handle things the same way - some people cannot multt task or cope with schedule changes. Its just super sad all round and they have to live with this for the rest of their lives. The worst thing is these babies do suffer terribly as they dieChat Icon Chat Icon

This is one of my biggest fears as a mother. I would always leave my purse in the back seat, so I would never forget. Even when I have the rare chance of going out to the store without DS, I have had that hot flash panic attack as I'm walking into the store that I've left him in the car.

If this ever happened, and my DS died as a result; just give me the gun so I can promptly blow my brains out.

It sounds like a freak accident and I'm sure the parent has already suffered the worst punishment any parent could go through.

Judging them is not going to bring the child back.

just because you don't, doesn't mean that other people won't make the mistake.

honestly, I am petrified of this. When I read the story about the one from yesterday I immediately thought to myself "are my kids at daycare? Did I drop them?" Then I remember that my husband dropped them this morning. I DID have a shear moment of panic because I ALWAYS drop my kids and I didn't this am.

I can totally understand how this happens and that doesn't make it right but people are humans, they make mistakes - even those that are life altering.

I am sure there are those parents who are irresponsible who make the decision to consciously leave their children in the car. I am also sure there are parents who make the ultimate mistake, forgetting they were supposed to drop their kids and went to work instead.

I know a mother who posts here who has on more than one occasion, gotten to work with her child still in the back, totally forgetting to stop at daycare.

It happens ... unfortunately.

Yes. Everyone here is perfect and would never ever do anything wrong or make any mistakes. Or so we'd all like to believe. I don't think ANY ONE of us thinks we are capable of such a horrific thing or that we have the potential, but the reality is that EVERY SINGLE ONE of us could forget and make this mistake. That is what this is.

The most tragic of mistakes. He'll punish himself more than any jail ever would or could.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/fatal-distraction-forgetting-a-child-in-thebackseat-of-a-car-is-a-horrifying-mistake-is-it-a-crime/2014/06/16/8ae0fe3a-f580-11e3-a3a5-42be35962a52_story.html

This is a really powerful article. It discusses the issue in detail.

A memory expert, David Diamond, says this:

Our conscious mind prioritizes things by importance, but on a cellular level, our memory does not. If you’re capable of forgetting your cellphone, you are potentially capable of forgetting your child.”
