Q- applying for STAR w/o original deed?
we refinanced on our house at the end of April, and I changed my name on the deed to reflect my married name..well in July i found it odd that i still hadn't rec'd the new deed so i contacted the people involved (mortgage broker, laywer) and i was referred to speak with the title person that handled the closing. The title person said they would look into it and then a few weeks ago he told me they never rec'd an original deed back, but that the deed was in fact recorded... i called the county/town and they said i'd have to go in person to look it up and request a copy... does it matter that i pick up a copy and don't have the original? not sure if its going to be a problem since i probably have to re-apply for STAR..TIA!

The copy will be fine. I believe the records are kept in the basement of the building you have to go to to apply for STAR in person (can't remember..Dept of Assessment maybe?) Just make sure you bring cash, I don't think they accept CC. I *think* a copy is under $5 or somewhere around there.
