Re: Question about age for having children

Are we calling honors classes/AP as gifted or strictly "gifted programs"?
I'm curious about this as well. By definition, shouldn't the gifted and talented pool be fairly small? It doesn't make sense that most people are gifted and talented. UNLESS, there happens to be a strong correlation between being gifted and talented and being an LIF member
I was going to say, if this is the case, LIF clearly does not represent the general public because I encounter a whole lotta stupid people IRL!

LOL I vaguely remember that. But I think it was more drama because the poster was looking for school districts that had "gifted" programs for her unborn and yet to be conceived child, because said child was guaranteed to be super smart because her and her DH were both mensa level. Or something like that
Yep. That was basically it. But I remember an insane amount of people commenting that they were in the G&T program on that thread. My school didn't have a G&T program so I guess when I was born my parents had no expectations that id be smart.

Re: Question about age for having children
Had my first at 28. I have a masters degree. I was in a gifted and talented class in grades 1-4. In my case, that's defined as one class out of the grade that was limited to students who tested into it. I started a new school starting in 5th grade and from then on, I was demoted to superbly average.

Re: Question about age for having children
I'm curious what relationship you are trying to connect between being in a gifted program and having a child by 31. I don't mean that as snarky, seriously wondering.

No snark taken
My project began by looking a specific group of individuals who all participated in the same highly-selective gifted and talented program from grades 7-10 (they all also participated in a g/t program in grades 4-6 as well, but the younger program was less selective).
As I was looking at the results, I noticed that a very low percentage of them actually had children (less than 30%). My husband and I started talking about this, and he thought that the percentage sounded about right for the general population, while I disagreed. Based on the poll, I believe I was right, although he brought up a valid point that since this is a family chat board, the numbers here are probably somewhat skewed as well.
So, it was mainly just curiosity to see how the numbers from my small sample group compared to a larger, more general population

Food for thought.
"In his book, “The Intelligence Paradox: Why the Intelligent Choice Isn’t Always the Smart One,” Kanazawa suggests that for every 15 IQ points a woman possesses, her maternal urge drops by 25 percent."

This is interesting. I also found it interesting that there was an equal percentage of males and females who had children. However, the individuals who would be quantified as the "most successful," i.e. those who attended schools such as Yale, Harvard, and MIT, did not have children.
I also found the percentage of individuals who married relatively low as well compared to peers in the same age group.
As I said, it was just very interesting to me.
