Question about destination weddings

My friend just got engaged and was planning on having a destination wedding. A friend of her fiancee's just got married in the bahamas and apparently when they came back his wife went to get her licensed changed and they said she couldnt b/c they did not honor her marriage being it was in the bahamas it is not acknowledged by the U.S. Can this be right? My friend told me the only other place the U.S. acknowledges are the US Virgin Islands. So what do people do, get married twice? Get married at the courthouse and also married at their destination?

Re: Question about destination weddings

i think thats right. when SIL was looking into a DW in italy, i think she had mentioned that they would have to do the wedding in italy but then also have a quickie ceremony at city hall to have it acknowledged here.

Re: Question about destination weddings

I got married in Jamaica and had no problem changing my social security card with my new name but not with DMV. DMV only accepts U.S. documents and so do most city offices (i work for one). DMV told me to bring in other documents with my new name (either 6 or 8 points) and they would change my license
