Question about Husband and In-Laws
If your DH comes from a family that gets together every Sunday (or Saturday) for a family dinner etc.. do you go with him and/or your kids to these family dinners every time DH goes or do you send DH and the kids without you?
MY DH Is Italian and his mom does a traditional Sunday dinner at his parents house every week -- which is like a 1/2 day (at least) affair ( we usualy leave around 1:30 and get home around 8:30) - his sisters usually go too. I wouldnt keep my DH or my kids from going but Im starting to think it wouldnt be so bad to send him alone with the kids every now and again without me so I could use the time to do things around the house etc.

Question about Husband and In-Laws
My dhs family is very far from that, but there's nothing wrong with sending him alone with the kids sometimes.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
Both of our family are like that. We spend almost every Sat at my parents and almost every Sunday at his parents. We always go as a family.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
If DH's mom were still alive - that is most likely be how it would have been for me... and I would go every Sunday.
That's not to say if I had something to do (shower, party etc) I would go to that and send DH on his own.
Over the summers when my family is at home more, that is how it is now for us... and DH comes with me all the time (except if he has to work).

Question about Husband and In-Laws
Interesting. Thanks ladies.. Ive always gone too, except on rare occasion but lately, I have been hearing of moms who use the day to get their own stuff done and I thought it sounded like a good idea. I cant get DH To take the kids out for the day usually unless its to go to his parents house so it seemed ideal since its the only alone time I have. I think I will take a sunday a month to myself but good to know that the norm is to go- at least I ve been doing it "right" all these years =) My suggestion was to get together every other week.. and apparently my sisters in law are on board with this too-- (shockingly!), but now Im like hmm how about YOU go every week and I go every other weekend with you =)))

Question about Husband and In-Laws
I have to say I wouldn't go. My weekends are my only time to do things and spend time with my family. I would never commit to an every Sun event.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
We don't go every Sunday and if DH wants to, he can without me. We don't have kids. If we did, he could take them.
They always did every Sunday but like you said - it's 1/2 day affair and for me, Sunday is a day of rest around here. Plus my DH is only off on Sunday's so if we spend every Sunday there, we'd pretty much never have time to ourselves or to do projects around the house.

We all go. The only time I wouldn't is if I was sick or had another engagement but then more often than not DH rather not go without me.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
If it's every single week, then there is nothing wrong with not going once in a while or going every other week. Weekend time is precious and I think it's a bit much to have to go every single week. And both my family and my DH's are Italian so I'm not a stranger to this exact situation.

Question about Husband and In-Laws
I would say switch to every other weekend then once a month.
They still wont understand we work full time and need time around the house for chores and relaxation.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
DH's family is like this. I always go but recently I've been contemplating the same thing. I could easily just send him with DS but then i get nervous that all they will feed him is bread, cookies, and cake
Maybe one day I'll actually try it.

Question about Husband and In-Laws
Every weekend.....no I wouldn't go. Once in a while, yes. Everything that I do on the weekends would not be able to get done basically in one day.

dont forget, pasta, ice cream, and espresso and occasional taste of limoncello!
DO IT! Its so nice to have a day to yourself. I have done it a couple of times in the last few months and have gotten a couple of minor projects done around the house that normally i could never get to with the kiddos around.

Same here!
Thats way too much of a commitment for me. My weeks are full of work, school and running a business. My weekends are for the very little down time I have. If it was a weeknight maybe.

Question about Husband and In-Laws
DHs family all get together often, they all live in the same town- his brother goes to his parents many times a week. DH sees his parents once every other week- sometimes once a week. I usually don't go unless it's an event. I hate them. They have been mean to me and even worse to DH. I feel bad for him. However he know if he doesn't see them they will never come to our house. I don't mind he goes- he doesn't want to completely loose touch with them. I only see them if it's an event or holiday. I can't spend all my free time with them, I have family I want to see and I have stuff to do like take care of my house, food shop, see friends. I keep my distance as much as I can.

Question about Husband and In-Laws
DH sees his parents once a month and half the times I do not go. They expect him there at noon and most of the times he doesnt leave until 8-9pm. I can't sit that long sitting on their couch all day watching tv.

Re: Question about Husband and In-Laws
We see my parents every saturday, usually get there around 3pm and stay until DS's bedtime.
DH and DS go to see DH's parents every Sunday. I rarely go. I use the time to "clean the house" (read: catch up on my shows)
I actually am starting to feel like i'm missing out so I may start going once a month or so.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT! DONT FEEL GUILTY! TAKE ADVANTAGE!
Now that we live far and dont see them as often I dont do it as much, but best believe I STILL DO IT!
