question about name calling??????????????

I don't get the whole aversion to 'name calling'. While I agree it's in poor taste and don't think I would consciously resort to radomnly slewing insults towards someone...

but...

aren't we all adults? (in the literal sense of course.) Since when has a little mud slinging TRULY offended someone? I can understand in extreme case (racial.. Threatening etc etc.) But I don't see where calling someone ignorant is damaging another person and warrants a thread pulled... (i'm using ignorant as an example... )

you DO know... sticks and stones [dot dot dot]

but I just don't get why a thread has to be pulled within the first onset of something THAT MAY or MAY NOT be 'name calling?"

Again, I can understand if it's a full on attack which bears no intellect WHATSOEVER besides wasting the boards precious bandwidth...

Discuss...

Re: question about name calling.

I think, apart from it just being immature, it also can deter people from this site. This web site is a business -- if it were a free for all, with mud slinging and name-calling accepted all the time, I don't think as many people would want to visit quite as frequently (I sure wouldn't).

Re: question about name calling.

I agree.

Also i look at it this way. Say person A calls person B an Asssclown. Everyone thinks its petty, now person A just made themself look like an asssclown. The name didn't hurt person B, and the only one that looks like an asssclown is the one who engaged in name calling. No one's hurt, everyone else laughs, its a great ol' time.

I don't see the reason to pull that kind of thread- especially if there's validity in other posts on the thread. No one ever died from being called an asssclown.

Yea, I think it's all a part of the image that Ron & Co. are going for with this being a family friendly site.

Re: question about name calling.

yes, but in a way, it could be seen as direct

people were calling people of certain beliefs ignorant, zealots, uneducated and idiots

i adhere to those beliefs, so basically you're calling me all of the above, even if it's not directed at me.

It's like me saying (and I'm merely trying to make a point - it's not how I feel):

I think all Obama supporters are idiots.

You mean to say that you and others, wouldn't take that personally? Even though I didn't come out and say, Jenn you're an idiot?

Yes, we ARE all adults. That's why it shouldn't be tolerated. We should be able to have debates -- no matter how "heated" they get -- without resorting to petty name calling. It's just completely unnecessary.

Honestly, not really, especially because I know it's not meant individually. I'd probably be ****** and ask why you felt that way, but I wouldn't take it nearly as personally as a personal attack.

Also, you know there are Obama peeps on the site. I honestly didn't think there were any hardcore new earth creationists on the site. My ignorance or arrogance.

I'm not talking about petty name calling... more of a statement of one's opinion.

'i think you're ignorant.. here is why' (to me) is different than 'you're an idiot'

like i said, i didn't take offense to you per se, because you at least tried to back up your opinions - even if I didn't care for the way it was presented

the exact comment was much more general

Yup, it can be even more offensive.

Do you really think blanket statements like that are so much less offensive?

What about -

"All Muslims are zealots and idiots."

"Anyone who doen't believe Christ is the Savior is an uneducated twit."

"Women are too emotional to be able to hold down a difficult job."

Statements like this are no better than calling me or anyone else a name directly.

So it's okay to be intolerant as long as the group toward which you are intolerant isn't around? Isn't that the attitude that helps perpetuate intolerance and hatred in this world?

I think all people who talk on their cell phones while driving (without handsfree) are Idiots. Chat Icon And, their arguments for why they think its ok means nothing to me, too. Chat Icon

i dont think it makes me "disrespectful" by saying that, but i think it all depends on the topic and terms that its said. Calling people who break the law Idiots is far different than Don's example of targeting a certain group based on their beliefs. But even then, i still think that it more poorly reflects on the person doing the name calling than the one that is called the name.Chat Icon

Point taken.

But it's also not what I meant about drawing a distinction about name calling.

These are examples of blanket statements about a group, not of name calling.
