Re: Questions on Child Safety Seats

Welcome and sorry about the drama in the other post! I do have a question: We have a Mazda CX9 and my parents have a Mercedes C class. Both cars have our convertible seat ( a Britax) in the middle. Is this correct? This is my dilemma- I am terrified of having my DD's seat on one side or the other because what if we are in an accident where we get hit on that side. I just don't know which is worse.. could you tell me if its ok for the seat to be a middle (with latch) and if not why? Could the seat fly off?
I need more information please. How old is the child? What years are the cars? It the car seat installed forward or rear facing?

I have a question also!
It's actually regarding my cousin and aunt...
My aunt has her grandson (my 2nd cousin) every weekend....
She has his booster in her car.
He is 5 years old, and quite a tall boy.
His booster is in the middle seat.... I think that it's unsafe there....
Please tell me... Is that considered safe? There is no latch on this seat (Not sure if it's on any booster seat).
What car is he in? The center should be fine as long as the seat belt path is not smaller than the width of the booster seat.
In other words, where the lap portion comes out and where it buckles into is not smaller than the width of the booster.
A proper fitting booseter is one where the lap belt when positioned is accross the hips and the shoulder belt id between the neck and the shoulder.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!!! Welcome!!!!!!! Thank you SO MUCH for your time!!!!!
I have a question as well - I have a 2009 Nissan Murano and we have the Evenflo Triumph convertible car seat behind the passenger seat, using the LATCH system. Is that where the seat should be or is the middle safer? THANK YOU!!!!!
Is the seat forward or rear facing?
The only problem with the Murano at times is the seat belt path and the Triumph. If the belt path, that is where the seat belt come out and where it buckles in, is too narrow for the Triumph. If that is the case, the side is the better choice.
If you were to install the seat in the center, you would abe to use the seat belt system because there is no center LATCH in the car.
The side should be fine, just make sure the seat does not move more than an inch side to side when you place your havd at the seat belt (LATCH) path.

Thank you and welcome.
Forgive me if this has been asked but is the middle seat the safest seat for an infant/child?
How much of a risk do sideairbags pose?
Thank you for reaching out to us.
The middle is the safest location, but at time it is not available on some cars.
Side airbags are not a problem as they do not deploy at the seat.

Hi,
Yes I do actually have a question that I was just discussing last night. I'm expecting baby #2 and was planning to use the infant seat I used for #1. It was purchased 3 years ago. We used it for several months and then moved her to a regular carseat. My question is whether it is safe to reuse the old infant seat. I know the "rule of thumb" is nothing over 5 years, but I just want to be sure that having this seat stored in the garage, being subject to heat and cold as the weather changed is not going to compromise the safety of the seat.
TIA!
The seat should be fine, but my concern is more about the cover and straps. Inspect them for mold or mildew. That may be a major problem if present.
Take a visual look at the seat, but again, as long as it was not dropped each time you opened the garage or used as a foot stool, It should be ok.
my infant seat did grow some mold on the straps but I cleaned them with vinegar, and they are all nice and clean....is it ok to use it again?
I am not an expert on mold per se, but a nurse once did tell me that once mold exists it does not cllean off perfectly. I need someone else's input on this one.
Also, was any mold present on the cushion or seat itself? Mold can pose health problems. But again, I need more input in this

Thanks so much for responding so quickly....
She has a Hyundai Santa Fe... I think it's an 06 or 07.
I will have to look at the booster the next time she is over.... She's in Westchester.
I was just thinking that it wouldn't be extremely safe if God forbid there was a collision - There's such an opening that if he were propelled from the seat that he would go straight through the middle of the driver and passenger seats.

Look at him in the seat as I said, If used properly he should fine and will not be propelled.

Re: Questions on Child Safety Seats
we are about to install a britax marathon in a 2003 nissan pathfinder and a 1999 hyundai elantra. we are definitely putting the rear facing britax in the middle for the elantra, but what about the pathfinder? is it just as good on the passenger rear side? or is it significantly different?

Passenger side - send me mail if you would like me to help. The Britax should be rear-teathered

No mold on the cushion or seat itself, just the straps. I get what you are saying about the health issue, and I was wondering that too, but I just meant on a stand point of wearing down the straps and their strength.
Also, I have a ford edge and I have the Britax Marathon in the middle facing forward, is this the best place for it? I use the latches too, not the seatbelt, to secure it.

We have the Britax Marathon installed rear-facing in the center. Our child is 18 months old. Is it ok to keep it rear-facing as long as he's comfortable?
Also, when we do turn the car seat around, can we keep it in the center?
TIA!

My DD is 20 months, we switched her to forward-facing only a month ago. We have the Britax Roundabout. When the seatbelt is snapped and fully tightened on her (and the clasp is armpit level), the straps that go across the thigh area seem loose...is that normal?
Thank you!

Re: Questions on Child Safety Seats
I appreciate your confidence here and your passion for what you do. Welcome.
I think our daughter is soon to grow out of her infant seat and we would like to purchase a convertible seat - money is not really an issue - we have an insane amount of gift cards that we saved for this purchase. The seat will primarily be for use in my car, a 2007 CR-V and will probably never be moved but we'd like to have the option in the event of an emergency. We would like to buy a second seat, but do not feel a need to buy two of the same. Our second car is a 2002 Sebring Convertible.
Which is the best seat that you recommend for my car and which do you think would be best as a second seat where we do not need to spend quite as much. Thanks.
Oh and where in the back seat should we have it. Thanks.

You can keep faceing the rear as long as the baby is under 33 pounds.
The reason to keep a child rear facing it to minimize the chance of spinal or neck injury.

Check to see if the claps are below the velcro. The straps at the hips should not be loose.
Try pulling up a bit to take up some of the slack.

Read the owner's manual. Not all seats support 33 lbs, and some go higher. The Graco ComfortSport only supports up to 30 lbs, and the bigger Britax seats support 35lbs, according to the manufacturer.

Re: Questions on Child Safety Seats
Britax Marathon labels, prior to 2007 stated 33 pounds, Since then, they have updated to 35. My mistake.
The point is that the old rule of thumb, 20 pound and a year is no longer advised.
Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible. Try and get as close to the weight limit the seat allows.
For the most part the average seat on the market allows 30 pounds rear-facing, however with the increasing number of seats increasing their weight allowances, check your manual. These weights are also listed on the side label.

I always erred on the side of caution, and never got too close to the weight limits listed. When they say "X" pounds, are they counting a naked baby, and leaving leeway for clothing, or do they mean X pounds total, including all clothing? I assume it included the clothing. I know it's not a big weight difference, and there has to be some margin of safety in the weight ranges, but it would be nice to know what they really mean.
