Britax Marathon labels, prior to 2007 stated 33 pounds, Since then, they have updated to 35. My mistake.
The point is that the old rule of thumb, 20 pound and a year is no longer advised.
Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible. Try and get as close to the weight limit the seat allows.
For the most part the average seat on the market allows 30 pounds rear-facing, however with the increasing number of seats increasing their weight allowances, check your manual. These weights are also listed on the side label.
I always erred on the side of caution, and never got too close to the weight limits listed. When they say "X" pounds, are they counting a naked baby, and leaving leeway for clothing, or do they mean X pounds total, including all clothing? I assume it included the clothing. I know it's not a big weight difference, and there has to be some margin of safety in the weight ranges, but it would be nice to know what they really mean.
That is a great question, we always have taken the weight of the baby as weighed by their doctor. The clothing may add some weight, but for the most part we take the "naked" weight.

It makes sense. It's much easier to work from that weight. It's documented, and written down, and doesn't change from day to day. Who wants to weigh their DC every time they put them in the car?
"Sorry, son, I know your hands are cold, but if we put your mittens on, you can't go in the car seat today..... Maybe we can drive tomorrow when it gets a little warmer...."

Welcome and sorry about the drama in the other post! I do have a question: We have a Mazda CX9 and my parents have a Mercedes C class. Both cars have our convertible seat ( a Britax) in the middle. Is this correct? This is my dilemma- I am terrified of having my DD's seat on one side or the other because what if we are in an accident where we get hit on that side. I just don't know which is worse.. could you tell me if its ok for the seat to be a middle (with latch) and if not why? Could the seat fly off?
I need more information please. How old is the child? What years are the cars? It the car seat installed forward or rear facing?
The cars are both 2008. My DD is 8 months and the seat is rear facing and I hope to keep it rear facing as long as possible. Thanks so much for the help
Bump Sorry to be annoying Carseat Safety, but was hoping to get help if possible with my question. Just want to make sure we are doing the right thing especially since we will be taking longer car rides once the weather is nice.

For the Mazda CX9, how did you install the seat in the middle? Did you use LATCH or seat belts system?
For the Mercedes C Class, again, how did you install the seat?
Please send me a forum mail so I can get more specifics from you.
