Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I work at a Peds office and ALL the doctors there gave it to their children. It's a cancer vaccine. It's the dream. Cervical cancer is going the way of polio because of this vaccine. I had a friend with invasive cervical cancer. Rare in this part of the world, but it happened. She suffered terribly. When cervical cancer spreads, it's BAD. I can also say working in peds for several years we have NEVER seen an adverse reaction. My boys will definitely be getting this.
Eta - this article helped me get over any qualms. https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.nytimes.com/2016/02/22/health/vaccine-has-sharply-reduced-hpv-in-teenage-girls-study-says.amp.html

Can anyone lay out the reasons why it's considered scarier than other vaccines? What are the side effects that people worry about?
There have been reported side effects and reading stuff like this terrified me, even though I know its rare:
HPV vaccine horror stories
See right here, this ruins the validatity of this site for me:
You will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free John 8:32
'"We must obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29) Vaccination is an artificial invention made by man to alter immune function. The immune system, on the other hand, is a natural function given by God to protect us from disease. Trusting in manmade vaccination is like saying that we think God didn’t make us correctly and that we need artificially ‘boosting’ in order to survive.
Seems to me like a bunch of religious zealots who don't believe in any vaccines.
I have heard of some side effects but I dont' recall what they were and how common they were. I will have to do more research as DD gets closer to the age for the shot.
Definitely do research but just be careful of the source.
BINGO!!
That's why my post says look at the science. Most of the anti vax sites are not about science...for some reason.
So people can tell their story. I don't doubt people have been hurt by this vaccine. However a site like this has no science, no study.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
it does not cover every strain like much like the flu vac, and I would not give it if I had kids. I think there is too much vaccinations. Many times its so Pharma company's make money.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I can't even begin with this vaccine. I'm so against it and really hope it gets pulled from the market.
I got the vaccine when it first came out. I developed a serious auto-immune disorder afterwards. It never occurred to me that it was from the vaccine, but recently 2 of my specialists have attributed it the Gardasil. I was perfectly healthy before. I've been suffering for years. Obviously, I WILL NOT be giving it to my child.
FWIW I also lost a very close relative to cervical cancer (which was what prompted me to get the vaccine as soon as it was on the market) and I am still against it. My relative went years without getting an annual exam . Probably because she didn't have health insurance.
Also, even though I got the vaccine, I still ended up with abnormal cells that had to be removed (leep), because the vaccine only protects against a few strains and there are over 100 strains of HPV.
Cervical cancer from HPV is very slow to develop. It can take 10-15 years. Annual paps can prevent cervical cancer by removing any abnormal cells before they turn into cancer.
IMO there is no reason to take the risk with this vaccine.

My girls will both get it when they are of age. I had it and had no side affects.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
The risks of the vaccine do scare me but I currently have a relative who is dying of cancer caused from HPV. Seeing their awful ordeal (I'll spare everyone the details but it's by far the worst case I've seen) definitely has me leaning towards giving the vaccine to my chilrden.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I get my kids all their legally mandated vaccines on schedule. However, I don't get flu shots and I probably won't give them the HPV shot. Like the flu shot, it only covers a few strains. To me, it's not worth the risk of the horrendous side effects that I have heard. Yes, I know all vaccines carry risk but in weighing the risk/reward, I just feel like with measles, etc. you have no control over getting that whereas with cervical cancer, you do have some control (don't have unprotected sex, get annual PAPs, etc.).
Some of my friends are adamant that their kids get Gardasil and that's fine - everyone has different experiences that they base their decisions on. I definitely do not however think it should be mandatory.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
My husband and i get all vaccines for our boys, except HPV and flu. Flu b/c there are too many strains and HPV b/c it is too new. My stepson just turned 18 and we told him it why we don't agree with it, but it is ultimately his choice. His mother wants him to get it, but he isn't so sure. We suggested he read the literature and determine for himself.
We feel it is too new, particularly for boys, since it was created and tested primarily for females.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
My pediatrician has five young kids--including three daughters--and said he will not be giving this vaccine to his children. He is very pro-vaccine normally.

Terrifying that having sex can give you cancer--indirectly. Those commercials for the vaccine are positively gripping and haunting.

I think it's a good lesson though in safe sex. HPV vaccine or not, you should not be having unprotected sex. What about HIV? Herpes? All the other STD's. I hope this vaccine doesn't give a false sense of security to people.

I agree...my mom wasn't the type of mom that talked sex with me. And I was pretty responsible, but I probably could've benefited from a relationship that was more open to discussing the possible dangers. I hope to have that relationship with my DC.

The problem with HPV is condoms do not protect you. This is spread by skin on skin contact. In fact 85% of all sexually active people have has a strain at one point.

Re: Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I am normally pro vaccine, but this one scares me. It is the first one that I've heard a number of pediatricians say they will not be giving to their children.
I'm no scientist and I have many years before I have to think about this, but if I had to decide today I would say no.

I'm sorry if I sound like a complete dumbass...but doesn't a condom protect you from direct skin on skin (genital) contact? Or are you saying it can be passed from absolutely any skin to skin contact?

I'm confused by this too. So it can be transmitted by a hug?
ETA- just saw this:
It is important to use a condom from start to finish of every sex act, including oral and anal sex. HPV is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. Because HPV can infect areas that are not covered by the condom, condoms will not fully protect you against contracting HPV, but condoms do help in HPV prevention.
