Just an aside...and I am TRULY not trying to start a debate. I am SHOCKED at the amount of people that don't get a flu shot.
My dad had serious, serious complications from the flu one year. He was in his late 40's at the time, no major health issues. Needless to say it was enough to scare all of us into getting it every year.
If only the shot worked. Half the time I hear of people getting the shot and getting the flu anyway. They always seem to guess what strains are going to be prevalent that year wrong. Terrible track record. And the answer is always- well it's a guess. Wonderful I feel like it's a crap shot or pure luck on whether or not you get the flu. Shot or not.
I think it's peace of mind more than anything.
If it works for you because of serious health issues, then take it.
If it makes you sleep better at night and you've never had an issue with it before, then take it.
If not, then why bother? It is like said above a guessing game at best.
We don't take it. Big deal we got H1N1. Including my young toddler at the time. It s@ucked but who cares? We are healthy and take care of ourselves and see doctors when needed. We were fine.
I always recommend it for those who want or need it. But I highly disagree it should be mandatory. It shouldn't even be called a vaccine as it's not a cure to anything but a preventative at best. You can literally STILL get the same flu it protects against just reduced symptoms. That's only if you're REALLY lucky and they got it right and you got really unlucky in the crapshoot.

Agree. None of us get the flu shot and my DH and DS got the flu last winter. We still won't get flu shots.

Someone who doesn't want to get pregnant?
I think HPV is moot once you're married. You'll just pass it pass it back and forth till it dies.
There are many other (better) options IMO to avoid pregnancy. I was religious about using condoms back when DH and I were in high school but nowadays, I can't stand using them. Too cold and impersonal. JMO.
I don't like them (or use them) either but for someone who can't use hormonal birth control there aren't a ton of other options.
I'd take them over another baby any day . What about an iud ?

There's only 1 IUD on the market that does not contain hormones. So one non hormonal option in addition to condoms. I think that constitutes "not a ton of other options."

Not to mention I have heard the side effects from the non hormonal one are awful in their own right....like practically hemorrhaging every month when you get your period. Not really a great option IMO

The side effects of the paraguard were horrible for me. When they took it out because I decided to get pregnant again my body let out what I could only describe as a sigh of relief. My cramps and the extremely heavy bleeding was hell with the paraguard which is the reason dh is getting neutered shortly after this baby is born.

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
My dd will not be getting the hpv vaccine. I have many family and friends in the medical community and they refuse to give this to their children. All but one are extremely pro vaccine and get upset with dh that he won't allow dd to get a flu shot but are adamantly against the hpv vaccine. Once I heard that dh and I said dd will not be getting it.

Yeah I heard some bad stories. Personally I don't like the thought of a foreign object being put in my body like that. So IUDs are pretty much out for me

Really torn on the HPV vaccine
I guess other than condoms there are diaphragms with spermicide , cooper iud , natural family planning ( which can be quite effective if you are dedicated to it) so there aren't a ton of options but there are some. T answer the original question I would not give the HPV vaccine for the reasons others have mentioned. Interestingly, I got it when it first came out, no side effects, but an abnormal lesion was later detected an it was caused by HPV. Thankfully it went away without intervention , but the shot obviously didn't protect against that strain.

I was always anti flu shot. In the fall of last year, I happened to be pregnant and nervous about my DS bringing in germs from school. I had him get the shot for the first time.
Well, in January he got the flu so bad that he spent the day at Cohen's getting IV fluids. I never in my life saw him that sick.
To each their own... This is never going to be a topic everyone will agree on.

I am normally pro vaccine, but this one scares me. It is the first one that I've heard a number of pediatricians say they will not be giving to their children.
I'm no scientist and I have many years before I have to think about this, but if I had to decide today I would say no.
Ditto. This is exactly where I'm at on this. Right now, if I had to decide today, I'd say no.

And with MUCH respect your post shows how much misinformation there is about the flu shot and what people are "taught" to believe.
1. The flu shot has a GREAT track record.
2. The reason the flu is so bad every year is that there is not enough herd immunity.
3. The shot IS a guess. No question. The scientists have to guess what strain they THINK will prevail the next year.
4. That "guess" is very effective.
5. The flu will not, ever, period, give you the flu. All those people who say they got the flu shot after the flu? They were exposed to the flu before the shot. The shot does NOT cause the flu. AT all.
6. Complications from the flu can and will kill babies and those who can't get the shot.
7. Complications from the Flu are real. Its actually one of the biggest killers every single year. So when people say "its just the flu" they literally have no idea of what they speak. Its deadly and kills SO many people all over the world.
8. getting the flu shot can also dampen symptoms from strains not covered in the shot. So if you get a different strain you are MUCH more likely to have lesser symptoms because of the flu shot.
9. As with ANY vaccination, any tylenol, any medicine there is a risk. Every single medication carries a risk with it.

I'll preface this by saying I have nothing against the flu shot and have given it to my children when they were younger and at greater risk. I got it myself when I was pregnant and right after giving birth.
But where are you getting you basis for saying the flu shot has a "GREAT" track record? For the past three seasons it has been less than 50% effective. Three years ago it was less than 20% effective. Yes that's better than nothing, but it's nowhere near a guarantee. The herd immunity argument is pretty weak when you're talking about this kind of effectiveness, no?

This is exactly what I meant, thanks. I think it has a pretty awful track record to be honest. So many people I know who got the shot got the flu last year. The doctors at both Stat Health and my daughter's ped said the same thing. But if you want to get the shot, rock on.
