Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I just don't get it. All people do is litter when they do this.
I can't stand it. Most times they get caught on telephone wires, birds can get wrapped in them, etc.
I wish people would stop doing this. It's not a bird that needs to be set free, it's a balloon.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
We did this in elementary school. It was this huge organized event. We attached letters to the balloons asking people to write to the school to see how far it went.
I remember that day so clearly. I even remember what I was wearing, what the weather was etc.
I know you are against balloon releases but thanks for bringing back a great memory.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
It's healing for some people. I know it's not environmentally sound, but I do understand why some people do it. A friend of ours did it after her daughter died. Maybe it's not rational, but tying love notes to the balloons and sending them off to her in 'heaven' made her family feel more at peace.
I wonder if they make or can make some more environmentally sound type of balloons..

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I understand the significance behind it for some, but there are many people who just let balloons go after they have a party, etc, no real emotional reasoning behind it.

If I got your balloon, I would have contacted you and said "thanks for littering" and had a few words with your teacher. How's that for an elementary school lesson? LOL

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
Some people wrote from jericho, Syosset and Hicksville (the school was in Jericho).
I was naive I thought mine would go to Italy. I remember being disappointed.

I did this as a kid when I was visiting my relatives in Georgia. The balloon got stuck in a tree and never went anywhere.
Then about a week after I returned back to ny, a girl from Georgia called me (imagine I wrote my name, address AND PHONE NUMBER on the card)
She said her dad was out jogging and found the shriveled balloon on the ground. LOL-- they actually thought the balloon floated all the way FROM new york to georgia.
we became pen pals for a while but then she started writing 'dear mailman, jesus loves you' and kept telling me about her savior jesus christ.
it got weird so we stopped contact.
anyway- yeah this post brought back a lot of memories....

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I would think smokers throwing their butts out the window are littering more than the few balloons here & there...everyday i see this happening
We had Balloon Day in elementary school too...

I went to a baby shower and they had us do this - release a balloon with your wish for the baby. They said the balloons were environmentally friendly.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I loved balloon day in elementary school! 3...2...1....GO! Hundreds of balloons in the air! It was awesome. By the time my sister got to elementary school, there was no more balloon day for the reasons you had said. Danger to the birds & bad for the environment.
I have a 5 year old nephew, who, for some reason cannot hold onto balloons very well. He even let a few go in Stop n Shop and my poor sister had to ask an employee to help get them down (they were already paid for)...My nephew just stood there and cried Sometimes, its not done on purpose.

Maybe the smokers are hoping someone will find the butt and track them down via lip prints, to let them know they found it?
And what about those who chuck sneakers onto telephone wires? What if they attached a note for someone to let them know if they found it? "If you find my smelly sneakers, call me to let me know you got them!!!"
Next time at the beach I think I will set my empty bag of doritos free with a note attached telling the person who finds it how many doritos I ate that day and what a great time I had. Obviously joking...
I don't know...as much as it's cool if someone contacted you, it's not the best lesson re environmental pollution.

I see your point (of course) but I get much more pizzey when people dont pick up the dog poop.
I know its totally different and you were not asking for things that pizzed us off .. But it just came to mind immediately...
I guess if I saw a dead bird stuck in a balloon i would be really upset !!!!

I didn't do it at school. I did it on my own... I learned my lesson though b/c I had a Jesus freak writing to me for a while.

I think you have to agree that NO ONE was enlightened back then.
In reality though, how many people REALLY do this? I'd say the majority of orphaned balloons are accidental releases. Any party I've been to the balloons were either given to guests with LO's or harvested for their helium. I've never seen anyone just let them go.....
And I've been to some hillbilly soires in my time.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
Agreed and in ceremonies when they are released in masses, like a memorial for a child....I say go for it. It a family finds comfort in it, somethings, IMO are more important and comfort while grieving the loss of a child is one of them.
