Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
Wow, even a FAQ page. I learned a thing or two, but I still would not feel comfortable doing it.
ETA - I am referring to balloons with strings/ribbon attached, not just a plain latex balloon.

we became pen pals for a while but then she started writing 'dear mailman, jesus loves you' and kept telling me about her savior jesus christ.
it got weird so we stopped contact.

I miss you!

I just hate when they wind up tangled in my icicle lights
Or floating around in my above ground pool.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
Really? I wish this was the biggest issue on my mind. I understand that it can be bad for the environment....but it's not the worst thing out there. Are there really *that* many people releasing balloons each day that this has become an issue? Really?

all it takes is one balloon to harm or kill one animal.
a little kid losing his balloon is one thing. it's not intentional.
a balloon release should be illegal. clearly they don't go to "heaven", and there really is no good that can come from them. there are so many other symbolic things we can do that are environmentally safe and won't harm the environment and animals.
litter is litter. whether it's a cigarette butt, a balloon, or other trash, it's litter. balloons are terrible because animals eat them and their strings. no good comes from that

I didn't say it's a big issue. I just said I don't like it. Not the biggest issue on my mind. Just thought it was an interesting topic. It came to mind b/c I was at a party recently and the party thrower released a bunch of balloons that no one wanted on the way out after the party was over.
And where did they go? A whopping 10 feet right up into the telephone wires. That's just not cool. I am sure they are still there and will be there for a long time, just disgusting looking outside a pretty restaurant, or for birds to get caught in.

That's how I feel.
I once saw a bird flying with tape stuck in it's beak (large clear packaging tape). I felt so bad for the bird, how can he get that out of his beak? And of course I couldn't help. Litter sickens me. "Symbolic" balloon release or not, many of those balloons wind up tangled in wires, trees, probably some land in the ocean, etc. Nothing good about that.

We did this in elementary school. It was this huge organized event. We attached letters to the balloons asking people to write to the school to see how far it went.
I remember that day so clearly. I even remember what I was wearing, what the weather was etc.
I know you are against balloon releases but thanks for bringing back a great memory.
We did this in Elemetary School too!
The most ironic thing now thinking about it, is we did it on Earth Day
It was every grade, and we walked to the park for earth day & we all released our balloons. I got a reply one year from someine on Connecticut who found mine!

If I ever were to do a balloon release, I wouldn't use strings, but honestly, I don't think I'd feel comfortable doing it either.

I wonder if they make or can make some more environmentally sound type of balloons..
they do actually! we did this at work when we had a memorial for one of our clients who passed away
Trader Joe's balloons are environmentally friendly.
