I never thought of it that way, but it does make sense.
I've never done it intentionally, but my accident, my DS has done it after getting a balloon @ Trader Joe's and by accident, he has let it go.
The look on his face when it has happened is heartbreaking.

At least someone found your balloon. Mine was abandoned, deserted, perhaps run over by a car. I would trade a jesus freak penpal for a no response balloon any day.

My DS releases one a year at his b-day party for "grandma in heaven"...I'm sure my DD will do this as well...For us its an emotional "thing"

I had felonious, flying balloons that landed on my back fence last week. They are still there because I think it's 1/2 the neighbors responsibility to remove them. I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

Some people wrote from jericho, Syosset and Hicksville (the school was in Jericho).
I was naive I thought mine would go to Italy. I remember being disappointed.
My school did it too & mine went from Bethpage to Ronkokoma! ( maybe somone found it & took it on the train! )
But yeah, it is a mess & a waste.

I have two limp and filthy foil balloons stuck in my beautiful cherry tree for a year now. I can't climb the tree to get them and they're too close to the power lines for comfort.
I once saw a video of people letting go of a big bunch of those foil (mylar?) balloons, they got caught in power lines and were sparking. I couldn't find it on YouTube and I don't know if it's true or not, that it could cause sparks or fire from power lines.

Actually, on a serious note, the only litter I ever found in Connetquot State Park (where I rode my horses for years) were mylar balloons. I hated seeing them, but I really doubt people were releasing them on purposes. I just assumed some kids let go of them by mistake or they somehow got away by accident. I don't think we have a huge epidemic of people running around letting go of balloons for no reason...
I just picked them up and threw them out.
Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw a littered balloon anywhere. I think we have a much bigger problem with people throwing trash and cigs out of cars than we do with people letting go of balloons...
