believe it or not, i've NEVER done a balloon release!
I haven't either, but the local police are still investigating a "God Bless You On Your First Holy Communion" balloon I may or may not have accidentally lost hold of when I was 7... Thankfully, they only have partial prints.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
If anyone has seen the balloons in this picture, they're mine. Thirty seconds after this picture was taken they flew away...I've investigated and I am considering charging my brother in law...but I need the strings to prove his prints are on them.
I told DD this year, she'll only have Pictures of Balloons at her party...

The balloons are only the tip of the iceberg with this picture, don't repost on parenting!

It's healing for some people. I know it's not environmentally sound, but I do understand why some people do it. A friend of ours did it after her daughter died. Maybe it's not rational, but tying love notes to the balloons and sending them off to her in 'heaven' made her family feel more at peace.
I wonder if they make or can make some more environmentally sound type of balloons..
Trader Joe's ballons actually are. They are made from a biodegradable material. You can see them start to fall apart on day two.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I never did a balloon release when we were little. We had "pen pals" in Texas that we wrote to. I remember mine asked me if I could see the Empire State Building from my house - he thought, if you lived in NY you could see sky-scrapers regardless of the fact that some of us live on Long Island or Upstate - far from tall buildings. Anywho, that's neither here nor there!
When I was a child, my father got me a balloon (mylar) in the shape of a star. I was so happy. The girl inflated it, tied it, and off we went. The moment I stepped outside and it caught a breeze the balloon floated away. The girl in the store didn't tie the knot tight enough around the bottom of the balloon. Much to my dismay, there I was, holding just a long ribbon which was now resting on the ground with a poorly tied loop at the end of it. My father thought the look of disappointment on my face was hysterical.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
We did these back in the 80s when I was in school to commemorate certain things- but back then no one really knew that they were bad for the planet.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I saw a HUGE balloon release at a wedding on the steps of a church in the Bronx in the late 80s. At the time, I just thought it was wrong because it was so cheezy.

We did this in elementary school. It was this huge organized event. We attached letters to the balloons asking people to write to the school to see how far it went.
I remember that day so clearly. I even remember what I was wearing, what the weather was etc.
I know you are against balloon releases but thanks for bringing back a great memory.
Same here... I don't remember what I was wearing though but I would assume the school uniform.

Hey - don't knock the alma mater.
And for the record, the 80s WERE cheezy.

In elementary school we threw coke bottles (um...GLASS bottles) into the ocean with letters. Mine went to England (no joke)... I'm sure they're still trying to track me down.

Without a doubt, the whole decade was cheezy.
For the record, though, the church was in Belmont, not at the alma mater.

Re: Releasing "balloons" into the air...
I've never personally participated in a balloon release. I always assumed it was bad for the environment. However, I've read that latex balloons are biodegradable and if you don't tie anything to the balloon, releases are generally safe.
