Religious Instruction

I still have a year to start worrying about this but do any of you with older children have them in any religion classes?

I really don't think that she can sit and memorize all the information that is taught but I don't want her missing out on communion or confirmation.

Re: Religious Instruction

Call your church or surrounding churches - they may have programs.

I don't have experience, but DS's daycare teacher has 4 special needs children. She started a program at her church for special needs children. At my CPSE the parent member told me how she switched churches, so her dc could go to religion with that teacher, since they were kicked out of classes at their own church Chat Icon

Re: Religious Instruction

That is awful! You would think the church would be a little more understanding considering what it is suppose to stand for. I better start calling around then to prepare.

Thanks!!

Re: Religious Instruction

Maybe homeschool? I know it's not the same but I know for us it's the only option.

Re: Religious Instruction

crashing...

just wanted to say my niece is going through this right now

she will be 8 on sat.

when my sister called about making her communion they said she ahd to take classes..my sister tried to explain she is autustic, non verbal, has seizures, will run away etc etc and on top of it all will ever so often throw a smack or a biteChat Icon

so..they go last sunday to the church...let me preface saying it was her and one other boy..the teacher they hired was a spanish teacher, never taught religon or had any experience with special needs children

so she drops her off..tries to stay, the teacher says she can wait outside if she wants..closed door..my ssiter says yes..10 minutes later she hears vanessa screaming and running around.. this poor woman was running after her and then when she got ehr vanessa tried to smack her..she looked terrified

my sis walks in and takes her home...gets the call during the week that they understand she cannot attend the classes etc etc

she is making communion may 12th

def call some churches and programs..these kids should not be denied

Re: Religious Instruction

We haven't done it yet. They start with PreK at our church, but DS still has one more year of PreK and given that he started at a new school and has a daycare for aftercare (thus two schools), I didn't want to add one more classroom experience to his plate at the moment. When it's time for him to go, the biggest issues for us will probably be separation. I'll also need to let them know that he doesn't do well with too many choices, or they may need to assist him with coloring, etc. He can also be anxious with groups and may become inattentive or fidget run around rather than sit and do work.

If he doesn't seem ready next year, I'll wait until Kindergarten. But whatever we do, I'll need to talk to the Pastor and then the teacher so they know what to expect. I don't know if there are other special needs children in their classes or not.

My brother has autism. Our church had a specific religion class for children with special needs. Call your church to see if they offer the same.
