i don't think $610 is an unfair price for the job. Yes high, but i have been getting outrageous quotes not much less for jobs much much smaller than that so it seems on par with the service. I get he said the was for materials but I think the total price of the job is what matters.
totally off topic but $610 just to do that is fair (i know nothing really about getting work done so it can totally be) if thats the case i am never going to be able afford to get anything done in my house
All I know is I need to get my DH on Cragislist. He builds beautiful things, does amazing renos, and I don't pay him squat!

I completely agree with you. I cant even convey the frustration I have had trying to 1. Get contractors to come to my house 2. Actually get a quote afterwards 3. Have the quote not be outrageous.
We were repeatedly quoted $300-600 for a 4 foot piece of WOOD to separate our dining room and hallway. So in comparison the price for her job seems on the high end of normal but not outrageous. I wish I had a handy DH or family member!

Im not going to lie...I am a bit disturbed.
I see in the before pic that the bed is all set up on the bottom with her pillow. Is that where she sleeps? I honestly can NEVER be sure what the OP has intentions of doing with that BUT it is obviously unsafe ESPECIALLY for a special needs child. I would NEVER ever put a lock on something like that. My main question is...WHY IS THERE A DOOR AT ALL? Especially with a lock?!
Also...with siblings this could get crazy! I would remove the door all together. JMO
ETA...just wanted to reword this...I don't want to come off harsh...just concerned.

Something like this....a scroll up curtain in the door way instead. I have done some research...I can't find anything like what you created....a door with a lock. Its obvious this is the safer way to go...special needs child or not..

I see in the before pic that the bed is all set up on the bottom with her pillow. So that MUST be where she sleeps. It looks like the mattress is still in there. I would remove the door all together.
I really didn't want to comment on this because I feel like it's not my business, but I when I read the OP comments about the bed needing to be modified because otherwise DD could escape, I was a little disturbed. I don't think the OP is looking to harm her child but if her daughter is sleeping in that I think that it's fair to say that it's dangerous and could be frightening for a child.

Re: Ripped off by handyman
Is OP locking her child in that at night? I thought that was supposed to be toy storage or a play space??? That is not safe at all for a child to sleep in. I am sorry for OP. I would differ to an expert, but for my untrained eye, locking a child like that seems dangerous.

Her daughter has a rare neuro-genetic disorder and I don't think any of us know the complications and difficulties that come along with that.
I know everyone is coming from a loving place in worrying about her child, but at least give her a chance to respond before everyone continues to comment on the bed situation.

At first glance I thought it was a doll house to play in now coming back and reading all this I just want to say would you feel it would be unsafe if the child has a habit of getting up in the middle of the night opening the front door and running off or maybe have an accident in the bathroom while everyone else was asleep...some kids with special needs don't understand the danger in situations, will touch an open flame etc..I have a special needs child that at the age of 2 did all this. I believe the OP did this for safety reasons and you can look at it just like those tents you would purchase for the top of cribs. Children can't get out of those and they are selling them at stores. I chose to sleep with my son until I felt he was ready for a big boy bed with bed rails. He just learned not to touch hot stuff and is not running off, he's 4 now. I don't thing it's right to speak out like this when you do not know the whole story.

Some of you women are disgusting! I am sure she has researched this and has sound reasoning for it. How flucking dare some of you. There is NO need for you to continually interject your opinions. Yes, I remembered her posting about a fundraiser awhile back, so I looked it up and it seems these types of things are common for children with this disorder.

I can see where people's gut reactions are coming from, but you have try to put yourself in their shoes. Picture yourself which a child who is capable of seriously harming themselves. I recall posts about just that from the OP. They are looking for a safe place for her to sleep so they can have some peace of mind. She's not locked in to the point where anyone can't open it and let her out. It's no different than a baby who we leave in a crib and would rely on an adult to help them in an emergency. God forbid there were an emergency, I don't think this is a child who is going to know how to help herself regardless of where she is. I'm sure they are doing the best to keep their child safe and it is a very difficult situation to be in.

Re: Ripped off by handyman
For anyone who read OPs other post recently about her marching in the Rockville Center St. Patrick's Day Parade ( http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-who-wants-to-march-with-us-824858-1.html ), you would know that her DD has Angelman's Syndrome. If you cared to follow the links she offered, there are many detailed articles about the Syndrome, the care and requirements needed, and the fact that many parents create a similar environment for their children.
As for the original topic, I have to side with the majority. You both agreed to $250 in materials, and he spend $260. DH also gave him a $50 tip. At least you like the end product. That's the important thing. If you spent $610 and hated it, then I would be upset.
Maybe this thread will raise awareness of AS, and the foundation will reap the benefits of additional donations, so it may be a good thing, karma-wise, in the long-run.

i know you are upset but i think this may be a little too much. i've been reading the posts and i'll admit i thought about the idea of locking a child in and got worried. but i didn't think it because i'm a horrible, vile human being. i didn't know the OP's history so I didn't realize this was a special needs bed. having concern doesn't make us bad people. no one called her a bad mother...they showed concern.
goldenrod explained it nicely and i get it now. i feel horrible for anyone who has to go through this. but because we're "ignorant" on the topic (i'm using that word) doesn't make us bad people. just educate us and then we'll all be in a happier place.

Really? I'm too much? Really? I make no apologies for it, none. I don't feel badly for one second about how or what I said. How I phrased my response is completely in tune to how I feel and should be the least of the concerning things about the attitudes and feelings expressed by people on this thread.
I'm not sorry and I stand by it.

See these were my thoughts exactly. Everyone is all up in arms like the child is being locked in a cage for 20 hours a day or something. But if you think about it, when your baby is not mobile and you have them in a crib, from which they cannot get out themselves, is it not the same thing? Should there be a fire, or some other issue where you have to evacuate, would you not have to go in and remove said child from the crib yourself? IMO this is pretty much the same situation. And she did state her DD had special needs so it is not like she was doing this just because she didn't feel like dealing with her spunky 3 year old climbing out of her big girl bed at night. Obviously it's for the child's safety.

Exactly. She said it in her original post. To me, it's obvious that a mom of a special needs child who is hiring someone to create a customized area for her child to sleep in is doing so for a reason. She is doing this because she is a good mother! OP, I hope that this is a good solution for your child, and I'm sorry about the receipts. As was said earlier, hopefully you can find a way to handle the tax part of this.

I think you're completely out of line and over the top.
I also disagree with your whole premise of assuming that everyone knows what is best for their own children, and that people shouldn't say something if they see something that is disturbing.
No, we don't know the OPs situation, however, on the face of it, it is disturbing to lock a child in there.
As someone else said, who seems to be closer to the situation that there is very real reason to do this due to a very abnormal condition, fine, but up until that point I see no reason why someone shouldn't point out that this doesn't seem right.

Re: Ripped off by handyman
Thank you all for your opinions on the handyman issue. When we asked about the piece, he said, "materials will run around $250", maybe a little more, maybe a little less. So I guess I just assumed I'd be paying actual HD cost. He went and bought everything on my time, so I didn't think about it. I didn't think twice about giving him materials cost ahead of time, because that has always been the MO when I've hired anybody to do work. I guess I was just assuming he was charging cost because of the way he worded it. All other times, the quote was always "here is your price...". I am going to call him again to try to settle it. Other than that, next time I'll just be smarter. I have hired workmen from CL in the past without issue, so didn't think twice about it. I'll be thinking twice next time, and asking many more questions. Thank you all for educating me. I'm relatively new to homeownership.
For those of you who are questioning the design for my child, I assure you, she is always safe.

OP, I just wanted to say your last post was very classy.
For everyone "disturbed" I am sure you had the best intentions, but don't you think she did the research before she spent $610? And if you don't, and you think she is wrong, do you think that she'll listen to a bunch of strangers on the internet?
"Oh honey, this gate thing? Four women on LIF are disturbed. That shit needs to come down tonight."
