Some of you women are disgusting! I am sure she has researched this and has sound reasoning for it. How flucking dare some of you. There is NO need for you to continually interject your opinions. You dont know the WHY or the HOW it works. You dont know the conversations she has had with therapists or Drs. You have NO IDEA.

Some of you are VILE human beings. You can spin it however you want, concerned, horrified, speaking for the childs safety. This was about a Handy Man......some of you make me sick.

And then to keep harping on it. What is wrong with some of you? Have you no decency at all?

No, we don't know the OPs situation, however, on the face of it, it is disturbing to lock a child in

Oh and one more thing about this....no, you dont. But you know what the DECENT thing to do would be, it would be to ASK her. To inquire, not interjecting unsolicited opinions to something completely unrelated to the OP. THAT would have been the decent way to approach it.

Call me vile or horrible or whatever- I'm sure the op had great intentions but I think the reactions are strong bc compared to other safety/ enclosed medical beds, this one seems extremely closed in due to the almost solid wood construction and bunk above- no more, no less.

Thank you all for your opinions on the handyman issue. When we asked about the piece, he said, "materials will run around $250", maybe a little more, maybe a little less. So I guess I just assumed I'd be paying actual HD cost. He went and bought everything on my time, so I didn't think about it. I didn't think twice about giving him materials cost ahead of time, because that has always been the MO when I've hired anybody to do work. I guess I was just assuming he was charging cost because of the way he worded it. All other times, the quote was always "here is your price...". I am going to call him again to try to settle it. Other than that, next time I'll just be smarter. I have hired workmen from CL in the past without issue, so didn't think twice about it. I'll be thinking twice next time, and asking many more questions. Thank you all for educating me. I'm relatively new to homeownership.

For those of you who are questioning the design for my child, I assure you, she is always safe.

Thank for clarifying, it makes sense why you were questioning the cost of materials. I thought it was an exact quote and what you definitely knew you were coming out of pocket for.

My mom has a subscription to Angie's list and I use it all the time. Every person I've hired from there has offered a discount or special when you mention Angie's list and once the work was completed they've ALL asked me to please leave a good review for them. They're all so paranoid because one bad review can make or break their career.

I really like using Angie's list for that reason. I believe most of the people there will go above and beyond. I think it's like $17 a year which is nothing.

I would be mindful about Angie's list, I think there is some shadiness in how they operate. I know they collect advertising fees from businesses and in exchange they purge bad reviews from advertisers. I also know some people from a freelance forum who have done work for them, I don't know if it was to write reviews- but I have learned in general to be wary of online reviews because many of them are written by paid writers.

I didn't see it anywhere, maybe I missed it, but did you have a written contract for the work? If not, you don't have the receipts, and you paid cash for everything, I think you would be wasting your time in small claims court.

I would probably just write it off as a lesson learned and be glad it wasn't more than a hundred dollars or so to realize how to prepare for the next project.

And I hope the design works out the way you want it to. Chat Icon

For anyone who read OPs other post recently about her marching in the Rockville Center St. Patrick's Day Parade ( http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-who-wants-to-march-with-us-824858-1.html ), you would know that her DD has Angelman's Syndrome. If you cared to follow the links she offered, there are many detailed articles about the Syndrome, the care and requirements needed, and the fact that many parents create a similar environment for their children.

As for the original topic, I have to side with the majority. You both agreed to $250 in materials, and he spend $260. DH also gave him a $50 tip.
At least you like the end product. That's the important thing. If you spent $610 and hated it, then I would be upset.

Maybe this thread will raise awareness of AS, and the foundation will reap the benefits of additional donations, so it may be a good thing, karma-wise, in the long-run. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Back to the op, my dh said that your dh probably priced the wrong plywood- that the finished plywood alone would run about $60. Also not to forget things like sanding belts and blades.

Ladies, honestly, if I may be frank, SHUT UP. If you want to discuss materials and costs fine, otherwise you are WAY out of line. I hope no one says another word about the structure, you dont know, dont presume to know, not in her shoes and Im sure she is doing what is best. That is not the issue at hand. Keep your unnecessary and irrelevant comments to yourself, please.

Just bc you can, doesnt mean you should.

Since you're being frank, Ill be frank too. Locking a child in a box to go to sleep is INSANE and besides being possibly DEADLY it would be very traumatizing.

Google safety beds for kids with special needs- they look NOTHING like this bunk and are made by specialized companies.

Again, I think (hope) that the bottom is just a playhouse like the Maxtrix brand- and the closure was just to keep the doors from swinging open.

I agree. What if this locks by accident?!?!

It's ok for people to ***** about safety of car seats but not mention concern about this?

Just as a question, what would be the concern if this did lock? The only thing I can think of would be to keep her child safe, which is what the original poster is doing. Clearly, if there was a fire or something along those lines, the child probably doesn't understand what a fire alarm is anyways, so chances are, the parent would come and get them or firemen would break through the window of the house. Hell, my child isn't special needs and out of safety, I have locked him in his room with a hook and latch. I am sure many of you think I am a horrible parent. It is easy to cast judgment of others when you don't walk in their shoes. It really is sad how catty women can be!

Not from me. This thread reminded me of stories about kids who get out of their homes when it's 5 degrees out and are never seen again.

Anyway, if there was a fire, no matter how old your kid is, you know their room is the first place you're going to go.

My point exactly. So what if it locks? What will happen?

I still stand by my opinion. You don't know how much stuff cost. I'm also married to a contractor and see the other side of some customers who think they know the business.

it's very true! My brother is a GC and really you don't know what the materials cost. Not all contractors use Home Depot. I know my brother tries to avoid it and uses small business. I think I'd just leave it be.

I think that since you agreed to the price you really weren't 'ripped off'. You agreed to his price.

he quoted $250 for materials.... So I would doubt any company would say oh its less heres a refund...

What I am wondering....... How is making a dollhouse looking front to a bunk bed a medical necessity for taxes? It looks dangerous if it has to be locked up. When I was at the hospital the safety bed hade side rails that would have the ability to be raised or lowered.

I am guessing that her child could escape if she wasn't locked in, thus causing harm to herself. I feel sorry for both parent and child in this situation. I can't imagine how a child feels being locked in what is basically a box, and I am sure parents don't love it, but have exhausted all other options

My fear is suffocation. This is what seems to be normally recommended for use in Angleman's Syndrome

http://www.medifab.com.au/products/beds-sleep-systems/safe-surround-plus-bed#.UxFHK2JdU1I

There are narrow spaces and it goes to the ceiling to allow freedom of movement. That was built does not appear from the photo to have air vents. That is what disturbed my untrained eye. I feel for the OP and her DD. I am incredibly sorry that she has the challenges that she faces on a daily basis. I am sure that none of us truly know or could possibly understand the struggles they face as a family on a daily basis. It just looks to me that there are other safer options on the market than what was built by a handyman. OP I wish you and your family the absolute best of luck. Please know that my concern was truly out of the kindness of my heart and not meant at all to be insensitive to your situation.

I also agree with LSP. I thought there was too limited airflow, with air only coming in from those two small windows. I would imagine it would get very warm in there.

It was requested to be, and hasn't been. Sometimes the appropriate thing to do is to keep your opinions to yourself. Just stop it, let it go. It has been established her daughter is NOT in harms way and this is in FACT safer for her, not that it was anyones business in the first place. Let it go. Just stop. I don't understand why people just cannot help themselves.

Agreed, I really truly feel for the op and the child and imsorry but This is not a safe option. From the outside it looks cute, but really it's a coffin with small windows. This needs more ventilation.
