Rotavirus vaccine
I opted not to give her the rotavirus vaccine since it is fairly new, my dr told me it has only been around for 3yrs. Did anyone else do this?

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
I did it with my DD. I had to rush my 2 YO son to the emergency room because he got the Rotovirus and after going through that with him (he was lethargic, dehydrated, and needed to have an IV), I didn't want to see my DD go through that.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
no... i gave the vaccine to my ds, and i actually have already seen the benefits of it. rota was going around daycare and ds picked it up and gave it to myself and dh.
dh and i were sick as dogs. fever, vomiting, diarrhea, the works. we were so dehydrated that it took us days to get back on our feet.
ds vomited once and that was it for him. no distress whatsoever. and no risk for life-threatening dehydration. infants just don't tolerate these illnesses as well as adults do, and what is a simple virus in an adult can quickly become life-threatening to a baby.
to vaccinate or not is a personal decision, but for me it's a no-brainer - i do it.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
I gave my DD the vaccine & on her third round of it, she got a mild form of it as a side effect, BUT, it was nothing like what the actual virus can be. Although she had diarhea for almost 7 days, she didn't have the pain, etc. that goes with it. I am giving her all the vaccinations as suggested by my ped. They are worth the side effects they may cause in the long run.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
When is this normally given? I don't think DD got it, but I can check her records at home.
She's almost 8 months.

This was dd's 2 month visit. I gave her the other vaccinations except the rotavirus.

This is not a mandatory vaccine. They must have 3 shots (oral) by 8 months. So you can't give it to her anymore.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
My youngest had the vaccine. There's minimal side effects to it=she just had gas a day or so after. IMO the rotavirus is much much worse. Benefits far outweigh the risk for me.
My oldest though didn't get it only because it was put on the schedule after the window of the 1st dose could be admins cause of her age.
Do what you think is best though Just do your research and talk to you PED about your concerns
ETA: neither of my kids are in daycare, but they do go out and are around other people who can easily transmit it

That's the reason my oldest couldn't get it.
But according to my doc, it was put on the Gov'ts rec vaccination schedule my PED goes by right before my youngest was born(July 07). It was around when my oldest, now 22 months, but it wasn't mandated then and I didnt' know about it otherwise i would have given it to her.
ETA: Sorry to Hijack your post

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
I skipped it because the new version had been on the market for less than a year (my son is now 15 months) when it was offered. The old version of this vaccine was pulled from the market due to complications arising from it.
DS is in daycarse and hasn't gotten it, so I don't regret skipping it. I also know people whose babies have developed the virus from the vaccine, so that's another thing to consider.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
The CDC has info about the vaccine on their website, and after reading it and talking to our ped, I decided to get this for DS. It is given in drop form, and the first dose is at 2 months. I believe the 2nd and 3rd are at 4 and 6 months.
So far, he had no side effects from this, but there are some, mostly a mild form of the virus itself.

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
I gave it to both Ds it was not around when DD was young.. I learned after giving one that you DO NOT FEED them right before giving the Vaccine.. so they were a month off from the rest of them which was fine it just seperated them more

Re: Rotavirus vaccine
My niece was in the hospital from rotavirus and it was horrible. My sister caught it from her and was also hospitalized. I got it from my niece and sister but thankfully was not hospitalized. I did however lose 11 pounds in 6 days from it. It was not fun at all. After that experience, I was all for giving it to my DS and pray he never goes thru what the 3 of us had.
Everyone will have their own opinion. Do what you feel comfortable with.
