Runners: when is it too cold for YOU to run outdoors?

I just strted running outdoors and I love it! I bought cold weather gear as suggested by msfabulous and I live nearva beautiful large park, so I am really enjoying myself.

I can't imagine enjoying running as much on a treadmill in a gym.

So, runners-- how cold is too cold for you to keep running outside and do you make the switch to the gym?

PS- today was a beautiful day for a run! I loved it!

I think I made it out once a week last winter b/c I'm a wimp. But for me, as long as it isn't WINDY, I would go out. Dressing is hard but Ii would do jumping jacks indoors to warm up.

Re: Runners: when is it too cold for YOU to run outdoors?

I know I'm unusual in this but I really can't stand running outside in the cold at all. My favorite temps for running outside are 60-80 degrees; I generally don't run outside if it's below 50-55 degrees. December through March I'm on the treadmill pretty much exclusively... I don't mind though, I actually enjoy treadmill running... but by the time April comes I'm so ready to run outside again!!!!

I'm a baby- I hate the cold. I will run outside for a race, but I'd rather skip it for training.

I ran the Wantagh snowball 5 miler today- It was 35* and I was fine.

I tend to stay indoors once the temps are under 45*. I know alot of runners though will brave single digits.

while I generally hate the cold, I don't mind running in it. I would say it would have to be in the low teens to keep me inside.

I warm up pretty quickly on a run, by 1/2 mile, I'm debating shedding layers even in freezing conditions. And I don't really sweat, so I don't have to worry about the sweat hitting cold air.

But conditions play a big role. I would rather run at 21 degrees than at 38 and rain. cold rain is worse than almost any condition. (IMO)

I will run outside as long as the wind-chill doesn't make it single digits.

I ran outside last week and it was 27 degrees out. I was dressed warm enough and I must say I felt great! Anything usually under 30 will keep me inside!

I will run in the cold but I dont like it below 30. My asthma acts up in the cold so I try to stick to the gym in the cold.

Same here for the most part, although this year I may have to stop running outdoors through the winter since I am running with my 5 month old in the jogging stroller. I wish I enjoyed running on the treadmill, but I feel like every mile on the treadmill feels like 3!!

the only killer for me is the wind-the cold temps i can deal with, but bitter wind can be too much. i can already see my weekly mileage taking a hit b.c of the winter though Chat Icon
