Salary vs Commission

ok I make a decent salary- but not for what I have to deal with

I have a oppertunity to work from home as a sales rep- the terrotiry already generates $45K with out trying- so in a year I could double that- which we would more then I make now- plus it's 1099- so I can wirte off everything under the sun

would you take the risk?

I am leaning towards yes- I just need to talk to my hubby and make sure he is ok with it

I work in the housewares industry- doing Product development- and I would be reping 6 lines of home products-

which if I move to florida in a few years would serve me better to work down there- vs the experince I have now which is very limited

ok, that's fine then

but then my question would be

let's play devil's advocate and in a year, you make far less than anticipated, can you live on one salary (DH)

Re: Salary vs Commission

I think if its something that you are interested in and excited about you should go for it....but only if you know that if worst comes to worst and you only make the 45,000 that you and your DH could afford your bills.

I think it sounds like something I would take the risk on as long as you can live off DH's salary and if my memory serves your DH has a business right?

I say if you can go for it. Explore all your options while you can

Re: Salary vs Commission

Hey, Beth

Before going into it, I'd personally do the following:

-Talk to other employees in the company about their experience and their salary, if they're willing to discuss.
-Figure out if DH and I could survive on his salary if my pay cut is drastic.

I know you've been wanting to leave your job for a while - if you think that the experience you'll gain is worth the risk and if you and DH decide that the pay cut won't affect being able to pay the bills, go for it.

Re: Salary vs Commission

it's not that we can't live on his salary- he also makes comission- he has a branch office of a mortgage company

so we liked that I have a salary- but I am very unhappy with my current job and this would give us a better quality o life b/c my day would be more flexible

then i would say look for a new job

IMO, flexibility is nice, but one guaranteed salary is important, expecially in real estate

at worst it would be $45K with out taxes taken out- is actually more then I make now with taxes taken out

I need about $2K a month to pay my part of the bills- so that's $24K a year

I agree- but since my accounts already generate money it's not like I have to go out and sell someone new

But are you sure that they generate money every month out of the year. Or are you sure that you are guaranteed a commission every month?
For example. my DH works in Sales, he gets paid every week. If it is a slow month (lets say Feb/March - he is a wine salesman - that is one of their slow times), and he doesn't make a certain amount in sales - we have to pay back this money. Thank god - it hasn't happen, but we have gotten very small commission checks because of it.
Like other have said - make sure you can live on DH's salary - and talk to other employees that do what you are doing to see how it works with the money and getting the $45,000 - make sure that you are guaranteed the $45,000.

Re: Salary vs Commission

I have alot to think about- she wants me to talk to all the other sales reps and my Husband before we go any further

this is going to be the first month in the last 2 months that my husband has brought home any decent money- so it's scary to think that we could both not bring home any money for 1 month

after reading all the comments- I am not so sure anymore

I think I need to think it over this weekend

I think you guys have to sit down & make some numbers. Base the salary assuming that you make the least. Good luck

I agree. It really does sound like that.

Me personally...I did sales...I found it to be stressful. I had to leave for a stable career...meaning guaranteed income. Unfortunately I fell in love with a car salesman who is commissioned based.

Personally, no, I know I couldn't do sales. But, if you feel it suits your personality and schedule and if you are able to make do on the base salary until you build up your commission, then go for it.
