Re: Salary vs Commission
You have to put away a few months of living expenses, incase you both don't bring home enough money 1 month, you have something to pull from to pay the bills. If you can do that...I think it's doable. I also sent you FM

Re: Salary vs Commission
I worked on commision and sales for one year. The pressure is crazy. If you can handle the pressure to make quota and always have a better month than the last then go for it. You will make a ton of money and the flexibility is great. If you can not handle pressure like that then don't do it.
I would worry every month that I was not going to make quota. Every month I was fine but the everyday stress killed me.

Re: Salary vs Commission
You already have one family member (DH) on a commission based job.
I would not feel comfortable putting all the eggs into one basket and have both members doing the same type of commission based work.
What would you do for medical coverage?

we wouldn't be in the same field- what I would do have nothing to do with mortgages or real estate
I would be reping a line of house products- example- those fancey $100 trash cans they sell at bed bath and beyond
he can get medical covergae thru the corp office of his company

ok I make a decent salary- but not for what I have to deal with
I have a oppertunity to work from home as a sales rep- the terrotiry already generates $45K with out trying- so in a year I could double that- which we would more then I make now- plus it's 1099- so I can wirte off everything under the sun
would you take the risk?
I am leaning towards yes- I just need to talk to my hubby and make sure he is ok with it
I have done this and I would vote YES! Especially if you know you can make more than you are making now. I was in this exact position a year and a half a go and glad I made this choice. The only drawback is that I am not eligible for disability once I give birth in May because I am on a 1099. However, I will be getting paid commissions the whole time I am on "maternity leave". I am on my DH's health insurance and I put money away in a ROTH IRA for my retirement.
I love the freedom of "owing my own business" on a 1099 and I love that I determine how much $$ I make. When it comes time for me to get a raise I look in the mirror and say "OK, let's bust our azz and give ourselves a raise". I love the fact that I don't have to have a "review" with 5 bosses over a 3-5% cost of living raise. That used to drive me nuts when i worked in my old office job. Also, the way my old office was run was comical. It was like working for dunnler mifflin or Initech.
This situation works for me, but I can see how some would not like it. And yes, the write offs are wonderful!
Feel free to FM me if you have any questions. Best of luck to you!
ETA: I work as an independant contractor for a title company. I am an account manager (sales).

Re: Salary vs Commission
My DH is in your industry (as well as a lot of our friends.) A lot of the reps do VERY well for themselves.
When he gets home tonight I'll ask him his opinion.

Re: Salary vs Commission
Beth - I was in a very similar spot a few months ago. I was MISERABLE at my job but making amazing money. I quit to do Real Estate which is also an independent contractor (and all commission) I think that if you are planning to have a family down the road - you can't go wrong with this.
If you can live nicely off your DH's salary and he is behind you then I would go for it.
Life's too short to be miserable every day at work.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Salary vs Commission
thanks girls- I am leaning towards taking the risk- why not?
I don't have any kids yet and I have supported my husband thru starting his own office etc- it's my turn to follow my dreams
and since this makes sense for the long run- I don't know why he would say no

Re: Salary vs Commission
I say go for it. It doesnt sound like you will be taking a pay cut since the 45k turns out to be more than you are making now. I believe that you don't get anywhere in life without taking risks, so I would go for it.
MY DH left a guaranteed $100k+base job to go to a new sales position that is 1/2 that base and commission. Before he switched he went back and forth about making the jump and in the end he felt that if he didn't take the opportunity he would always wonder... What if ??? In his case it worked out great.
GOOD LUCK!
