San Diego - car rental? WWYD?
We're going to be flying to San Diego on a Friday night and leaving on Monday morning to drive up to Anaheim. The cost to rent the car on Friday night vs. Monday morning is over $100 difference. Our hotel has a shuttle service. Our hotel is in Old Town. We have whale watching on Saturday followed by maybe a show at the Old Globe (in Balboa park_) and then Sunday the zoo, maybe hang out in the gaslamp quarter, etc. I believe Balboa Park is easily accessed on the trolley. Hopstop also seems to say the taxi rides are pretty cheap. There's also some stuff I want to see right in old town.
The reviews say the airport shuttle takes forever.
Would you 1) just suck it up and get the rental car for the whole time
2) Shuttle from airport to hotel on Friday night, no car in SD, shuttle back to the airport on Sunday morning to get the car.
3) If I split it into 2 rentals (1 weekend, and 1 week), it's only $53 more than the full rental. We'd have to go back to the airport to drop off the old car and pick up the new car on Monday morning before heading up.

Did you look into off airport rental locations? You can sometimes save a lot of money that way, and usually you still save the money if you pickup in a neighborhood location and drop off at the airport.
I would check picking up on Sat morning near your hotel and then returning Mon at the airport. Then you could take the shuttle Fri night to the hotel.
Otherwise I'd probably just rent the whole time.

My hotel is something like 8 minutes from the airport so the airport is closest by far

Yes, Good point.
Do you think the city is easy enough to get around by taxi/ public transport?
